AMD Demonstrates DirectX 11 Graphics Processor

When are the cards going to be released or better yet, reviewed?
 
I would even say september maybe too.

It's not like you cant bench on windows 7 RC since it lasts tell june 2010.

but who knows....Curious as to which games will take advantage of Dx11

One thing i knew, nvidia was gonna be last in this race.
Lets hope compotition still will be tight when nvidia launches their babies.
 
Its too early just because ATI showed the goods doesn't mean anything. Just might mean Nvidia is taking their time. I don't see it as bad thing. Anyways be at least a year after release before we see any games really.

I like their professional technical approach to these things. Hope I get to put the technology introduced in the Radeon 8500 I had forever ago to use in a year or two.

People have been calculating from the small die size that despite the fact it's 40nm it only has about 10% more transistors then current 4870 chips. This is a bit worrying from a performance stand point - if you say the extra 10% of transistors were used to implement the DX11 features then you end up with no more stream processors. No more processors means increased performance can only come from clock speed increases and other minor tweaks to improve efficiency.

Obviously DX11 will offer improvements, but only when DX11 games come out which due to the fact most games are out for the consoles too, and consoles only basically support DX9c isn't likely to happen soon. I mean DX10 is hardly used right now.

Good for them. Let's see how the hardware performs. They are also clearly claiming that they'll have DX11 first. I'll be waiting to see that one.

AMD is pushing themself hard i guess, only way they really can survive.
Ati 5xxx was rumored in july a while back, while nvidia was in september, i suspect theese are almost right, 1 month ahead on both minimum, or two, judging by how much e-tailers have in stock at the moment.

Lets hope nvidia compete better on the low end, compared to what they've done th past year, their GTX 260 vs 4870 1gb is the compotition we want in all segments, lets hope for it.

Dunno how much its worth to jump straight on the new boat, if starcraft 2 benefit from DX11, im in :p

That doesn't need to be done in events such as these. That's why NVIDIA has "NVIDIA's Editor's Day".

Where exactly didn't NVIDIA compete in the low-end ? It's precisely where NVIDIA never lost its advantage.

Considering that AMD has working DX11 hardware and Nvidia doesn't even have working 40nm DX10.0 hardware yet..
 
Nice to see stuff regarding DX11 and nextgen GPUs this early. Hope to hear soon more about the upcoming GPUs, it will also be interesting to see what nVidia will have to offer.

If this chip is only going to be about 1.2B transistors and 180mm^2 size, as speculated from those pictures, I can't think that it would be significantly faster than its predecessor RV770. The chip isn't not that much larger transistor wise so that it could hold much more shaders, though it could be much more efficient regardless that. Hopefully that's only a midrange part. :p
 
Very impressive news. Though I prefer performance numbers, it doesn't look like AMD/ATI will be late to the game for the latest DX implementation, like they were last time.
 
ATI will not only have the advantage if it releases DX11 hardware first. It already has hardware that supports most DX11 features, mainly Multi-threading, tessalation and compute shaders.
 
Nvidia will start with mobile chips and afterwards towards Q3 and later, it will release discrete desktop chips that will support DirectX 10.1 API.

After years of preaching how bad this is, Nvidia finally decided to include this API and this proves the fact which ATI preached for a while - that DirectX 10.1 is actually better than DirectX 10.

This is a transition toward DirectX 11, something that Nvidia and ATI will aim for later this year and it's quite clear now that at least ATI can manage to launch a DirectX 11 chip before the end of the year, while we are not sure if Nvidia can pull the same off.

one great news for nvidia fanatics there beloved nvidia is moving to dx 10.1 at last :p

Good point, but I think that will start to change pretty quickly with the upcoming prevalence of Windows 7. I think a lot of people held off from going to Vista because they were wary of it (myself included) but those XP users are ready for a change and Win 7 seems pretty promising (I'm impressed with it so far). So now I think developers can proceed with more confidence focusing on a DX 10 and up environment without having to worry about leaving a large demographic of XP users in the dark.

As a side note, I also think native 64 bit titles (and 64 bit apps in general) will start to pop up with the falling prices of RAM and the 4 GB ceiling of the 32 bit platform.
 
I've had an interesting thought, maybe instead of increasing the die size, they have found a way, working with AMD's techs to allow drastically higher clock rates in a GPU?

Be interesting if they scale up the GPU clock rates a bit more then a few hundred mhz.
 
With Rebellion on AMD/ATI's list of development houses with their "sooner than you think" slide, this makes me wonder if their new Aliens vs. Predator game will use DX11. That would be odd, given that it's also supposed to be on consoles.
 
Maybe I am remembering this wrong but I believe I've read several OCP articles in the last couple of years about how the nvidia and ATI chips architectures have been based around stream processors for several years now. Does this mean that they are entirely stream processors and that there are no DX10/DX11 specific functions in silicon? If so I am wondering how there are DX11 specific GPU's. It seems odd to me that the cards are programmable enough for NV/ATI to do physics on them, yet not programmable enough to handle the next rev of DirectX without needing a "new chip".

How exactly do you get to 1800 SPs ? Let's assume the 1.2 billion transistors and that means an increase of nearly 250 million transistors over RV770. From RV670 to RV770, an increase of nearly 300 million existed, which resulted in 2.5 times the number of stream processors i.e. 480. So how exactly does 250 million transistors over RV770 makes it have 1000 more stream processors ? The 1200 number seems less far fetched.
And obviously this is all assuming that not even one transistor of that number is used for anything else, other than ALUs (or Stream Processors), which is highly unlikely.

Still, this is most likely just a RV770 chip shrinked to 40 nm, with DX11 capabilities, which ATI will label as a HD 5xxx series.

I think most of the slides are rather cheesy and of low information value.

IT is critical that AMD gets on the ball with this.

They also need to incorporate a way to make your own multi-gpu profiles considering that it can take a month or more to get an update for a specific game.
