AMD Challenge

I know the claim is pretty silly based on stock cards. But they sound kind of like some desperate child by the way they worded it. AMD really need new marketing people...

Nvidia cards are blowing up when overclocked, so that statement is not relevant ;).

Wasn't that because some idiot failed to read the manual? :p But thats not the point. The 6990 is a faster card on stock, but the way they are expressing themselves is kind of desperate sounding in a kind of overcompensating way. If you put an over zealous defense, it always makes your position seem weaker. Which is why they need new marketing.

That surprised me until I read they used 1.5v off the bat. LOL

Then, I read HardOCP's review and they say that the safest voltage is nowhere higher than 1.05 to 1.065vcore.

To make it fair, lets overvolt the HD 6990 beyond spec. See how that shit survives

Childish tactic by AMD...wonder how they will feel then Intel does the same thing and humiliates them lol

Depends on the game and resolution obviously.
Though, for what those cards are intended, I'd agree that AMD delivers a better performance.

Has been done by the very same reviewers and no card died.

You should read some more.

Explain how this is childish.

According to some review sites, including [H]ard|OCP, AMD has the fastest. Hopefully the post gets some attention, a bit of publicity would really help AMD gain a little more credibility in the high-end spectrum of video cards. I'm not a fan of either card, but I don't like seeing someone make an unsubstantiated claim.

It's generally illegal under law to advertise yourself as "the best" or "the X" without providing proof (it's called "the claim" in ad circles). It's something which comes up time and time and time again. Papa John's vs Pizza Hut, etc.

Before the challenge starts, AMD was first to take the Imagequality on the same level. :p

On one hand, kudos to AMD for putting nVIDIA in its place for making false claims about the 590's stock performance. On the other hand, I feel that making claims based on stock performance does not tell the whole story. The 590 has better overclocking potential than the 6990, and will almost certainly be faster (on average) than the 6990. A person looking to get the maximum OC performance available for $700 would want a 590. Either way, they're both good, and AMD puts more performance on the table, while nVIDIA has an ace up its sleeve for the enthusiast. They're even.

EDIT: This is something that maybe even I haven't fully embraced yet. Both of these are multi-monitor cards, and when you're looking at resolution and AA make you only consider at minimum 25 x 16, and at best 57 x 12. In the reviews, the 6990 is almost universally CPU limited at lower resolutions until 25 x 16, and after that going up to ~7MP overtakes the 590 at stock speeds. So basically this is how it is I think:

<1920: 590 > 6990

1920: 590 = 6990

2560: 6990 = 590

>=57 x 10: 6990 > 590

Yeah, it's a bit silly, especially using 3DM11. It's an irrelevant benchmark no matter which card "wins."

And cherry picking reviews while ignoring the majority that show the opposite is just sad. I thought the clown car was empty with the departures of Ruiz and Richard, but they just keep coming. :p

Actually Techpowerup did not increase the voltages. Read their review. "Stock voltages were used". http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/Radeon_HD_6990/25.html
Where does it say he didn't test higher voltages?

i run a lot more voltage through other cards during testing and this never happens .. on gtx 590 with nvidia's power capping feature which is designed for that purpose it doesnt work. i think it's my obligation to tell you, no ?

I like it how nvidia can basically outright lie to their consumers, but when amd call them on it, amd are being babies and childish. Amd cant win.

Nvidia are kind of like apple in that regard i think. Their products, driver installs, and even colour schemes have looked so much better then ati/amd for so long now that people will like them no matter what they release due to association, among other things.

Half of you are victims of good marketing, and don't even know it.

Yeah how exactly does this make AMD childish? They're just asking Nvidia to prove the 590 is the fastest graphics card available as they are claiming it to be. Because actual hard data suggests otherwise.

I don't give a damn about 'which card is the fastest' because it'll be outdated in less than 6 months. :p
If AMD actually wants people to care, how about 'best overclocking support/utilities' or 'coolest-running GPU under load' or 'best drivers' (lol, though Nvidia wins that one I guess).

Sure they may have the single fastest video card. But when you get 4 GTX 580 3gbs anything AMD has goes out the window.

Btw, AMD has the right to say this and its fine by me. Not childish IMO.

I was reading threads about how both the latest processors and video cards were running $700+ each, or well above $500+ for decent ones...and how shocked I was to get a badass AMD quad-core for under $200! Same with the vid card :)

except overclocking means nothing as far as AMD and Nvidia go because neither officially support it. to bring up the argument that one card overclocks better then the other would mean that they would both have to officially support overclocking and thats something neither company will ever do. stock for stock which is what AMD is arguing AMD has the fastest single card. now if Nvidia had put a little switch on the GTX 590 that overclocked the card then the argument could be changed. but they didn't so what ever overclock you get outside of stock spec means nothing as far as marketing goes for either company.

now the AIB's are a totally different thing and they can suggest what ever they want at what ever clocks they want, or claim their card overclocks better then another card but that's the AIB's marketing and not AMD or Nvidia's marketing.

This whole argument about who has the fastest card is nothing but "bullshit". I don't care who has the fastest framerate in some silly benchmark...if the thing stutters all to hell or crashes every minute in actual games. What I want from my videocard is the ability to play my games smoothly, with decent eye-candy at a decent price. That's it. So who cares if the HD6990 or the GTX590 is faster...if they both play everything to your satisfaction?. I don't....

which is why you aren't in marketing. its very important in the marketing world to have the right to say they have the fastest product on the market. it also vindicates AMD(ATI) after all these years of trailing Nvidia that they have finally come back to take the crown they once had back in the radeon 9600-9800 days. if you have followed the graphic card market all these years, Nvidia has been cramming it down everyones throat that they have the worlds fastest graphic card(8800 ultra, GTX 280, GTX 285, GTX 295, GTX 480, GTX 580). finally for once AMD(ATI) has the ability to shove it back in Nvidia's face. it would be stupid of AMD to just let this pass by like it was nothing which is the key point everyone is missing. AMD missed a perfect marketing chance with the Intel chipset fiasco and now they have the chance to take Nvidia on with their product that is already in the customers hands.

think we need another thread on front page with this subject and a poll with option of voting this as childish or not.

Hmm, this seems to hit the mark based on comments on this thread.

Hence the EXTREME importance of Marketing & a Halo product in this market. This is actually AMD's 2nd round of having the fastest card, they did not seem to capitalize on it with the 5970.

AMD's marketing is improving based on the anticipation of their last products to market. As well as renewing their "Gaming Evolved" & getting in bed with some developers as nvidia does, but still bites overall and the whole company pays for it.
