AMD Athlon XP kicks butt =D

I don't think so. HT was introduced in 2002, but the Athlon 64 was released in late 2003/early 2004.

Splitting hairs. It was still a short lived run and soon surpassed. There was only 1 HT Pentium 4 in 02 and that was in Nov. and was not particularly impressive due to the chipset limitations already sited in the post previous to this one.

At the time, HT didn't do much because software was all single threaded. With today's software being multi-core aware, the P4 will hold up better. Neither will be particularly impressive, but the AthlonXP will choke during multi-tasking.

2500 barton still running in father-in-law's box. It's all he needs.
Similar situation. My father is running my old Athlon XP-M 2600+ Barton on a Shuttle AN35N, GF4, and 512 mb of Corsair Value Select.

Yes ...I love these too, I have approx. 40+ new in the box Socket A Motherboards, Processors & 3rd party Heatsinks. I probably should sell some, but haven't made the time to make a list of everything.

I had an emachines with a Celeron and when I moved to an Athlon XP system I too noticed a significant improvement in performance even when it came to common desktop tasks. But that shouldn't be a surprise as the early Celerons were notoriously gimped in cache memory.

Good times! I used an AthlonXP 2400+ with a 6600GT, it was great for Doom 3, and Half-Life 2! :D

Still have a few XP's kicking around, and still have two setups that run an XP 3200+ w/ dual-channel DDR @ 400FSB. :)

I had to volt mod my NF2 v1 chipset to hit that 400FSB! First with a pencil, then my first honest to goodness volt mod.

Epox 8RDA+ and XP2400M@ 2.5GHz
200x12.5 I didn't save anything that had noted the voltages or BIOS settings.

That 2400M is still being used by the guy I sold it to. It's in a Shuttle board now though; the 8RDA+ popped a cap and died *sniff*

You have the emonster!!!

Still have an Athlon XP 1700+ JIUHB running 2200Mhz with an SLK-800 Cooler. Only thing i've done to it since the day i bought it was replace the deafening vantec tornado with a nice quiet 80mm fan. It's in an abit NF-7 board too, which is probably one of my favorite boards.
So jealous! I wish I still had mine. Used to run a 1700+ JIUHB DLT3C with an slk-800 cooler with BH-5 ram and a 9700Pro in an EP-8RDA+ OC'd that little guy up to 2.2 or 2.3. I think I'm going to have to build myself a nostalgia rig one of these day :D

The ePox 8RDA+ was one of the best Socket A motherboards I've ever had. It did what it was supposed to. Unfortunately, computer got struck by lightning. >.<

Mine got struck by bulging caps :(

I wound up replacing it with a DFI Infinity that was pretty good too

LOL my parents had an emonster too! 1 GHz P3

Ahhh... Good 'ol Athlon XP.

I remember upgrading from an Intel P3 to an Athlon XP. I actually had two computers with an AMD chip. One was my gaming PC (which I gave away to my cousin) and my 1st HTPC using the Athlon XP-M. Yeah, at the time AMD's Athlon XP performance was better than Intel's P4 series, hence the reason for switching from Intel.

I still have my 1st HTPC with the Althon XP-M tucked away in a closet. I've been trying to get rid of it for couple of years (for free), but had no takers. I haven't fired it up since I retired it in 2008 after building my current HTPC.

You can send it to me for the price of shipping. :p

I have a complete system downstairs with an ASUS A7N-266 and I think a 2200+ XP and a gig of DDR400 with Vista, runs just fine, haven't powered it up in a while because there's absolutely nothing I need it for :(

HT became a bigger deal with the 800mhz FSB and the 865/875 chipsets (April/May 2003). The only chip that ran it before that was the 3.06Ghz P4 533 chip which was/is expensive, but ran on most of the older 845PE chipsets. Athlon 64 was later in 2003 (September for the FX-51 IIRC).

I always thought the Northwoods with HT felt smoother than the AXP's, but I rarely used them side by side, so it could have just been my imagination.

I've had many of both of these chips... Athlon XP 1700+ OC'd to 2.3 ghz, thing ran awesome. Although the volcano 7+ was screaming loud and it sucked for general usage.

HT is half worthless in my opinion... It gives people a false hope that the CPU is still fast. I had to convince my boss the other day that a Pentium D is faster than a Pentium 4 HT

I still have my Applebred Duron 1.6. Anyone remembering how epic that thing was gets major props.

Wow, you're all making me feel old. I still have a 485DX4 laptop on top of my bookshelf. Thinkpads never die, they just get so obsolete that you only turn them on as a sideshow.

My old Athlon XP 2500+ is sitting on the corner, still overclocked to 2.4Ghz. Man, that was a good deal. How many current chips overclock 57% on a $40 TT cooler?.

Over clocking those Athlon XP's was a lot of fun. I don't know what it was that made it so, but I have yet to experience the same satisfaction when overclocking as I did back then. Maybe I'm just older and have other priorities. Whatever it is, it would be nice to reclaim that level of awesomeness once again.

Overclock 'em again. I said the same thing earlier e.g. Socket 462 is still my favorite platform to bench. I just grabbed a couple of T-bred Semprons to bench tonight.:)

its funner the second time, because usually you dont care about the hardware as much and push it rediculous limits.

That set-up you are talking about is probably an overclocking monster. The 1700 oc'ed very well, and the Abit board was top notch oc board at the time.

I just got rid of my Atlon XP set up a week ago. It was a Athlon XP 2000, with a DFI lanparty board. Sweet pc in its time.

Don't remember how I did it, but I actually pushed an XP 2000 past its limits. I was probably 14. Didn't know squat about overclocking, but thought i did. So I am playing RS3 RavenShield (which was a bad ass game of the time) at a buddies lan party. When all of the sudden I smelled plastic burning. About 2 seconds later my pc shut down. The diode on the cpu was black. Bye-bye board and cpu

This is the last one I have running. Still makes for a decent test linux server. I had 4 or 5 Athlon XPs in the house at one point. I jumped ship for the Athlon 64s as soon as they came out though...

I built my first system using a 2200+ back in the day. Then I moved to a 2800+ Barton on H2O at 2.8GHz and it was all downhill from there :D I remember I built it so I could play UT2K3 after demoing it my local CompUSA.

Oh shit I found a picture of it!

Yea boyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

Nice. That looks like my old X800 XT PE card I had in my first PC build back in 2004. I had just missed the XP era though and the A64s were smoking everything then. So I had a NF4 mobo paired with an Athlon 4000+ (same as an FX53, just with a locked multiplier). I built that rig for the sole purpose to play HL2 :D. I still have that rig running right now (along side newer rig in sig), but I sold the X850 toward an X1900 XTX after a year or so and it still has that in it. It's actually still a decent gaming rig for 1280x1024 gaming.

Personally, I had the DFI Lanparty board...and the Ultra Infinity too...they were both good boards.

I had the lanparty also. It was so sweet, had the uv pci slots, and ram dimms. What a kick ass board. I was always a big fan of DFI boards. I wanted an ultra infinity but never got one.

nForce2... By far the best chipset nVidia ever made.
yep. and it really went downhill from there, with the possible exception of 790i

does anybody remember the nforce 500 series? Didn't think so :p
