Yet another remake of the survival horror game Alone in the Dark is coming out on October 25. The game is made by THQ Nordic studio Pieces Interactive, who made the two newest expansions for Titan Quest. The game is built using Unreal Engine 4, so be prepared...

There is also a free prologue available to play now.

The game does not look great but it runs insanely good as for as the framerate in general goes. At 5k 60 fps I was only using about 150-160 watts on my 4090 so it seems pretty well optimized. There are games that dont look much better but run WAY worse even at 4k than this does at 5k. That said there was one place in the demo that would drop a few fps no matter what.

As for as the little bit of actual gameplay in the demo I just don't understand what the hell is going on.

Oh man, I think I remember seeing an ad for the Atari Jaguar version of this awhile ago.

Looks like it's getting better Steam reviews so far than Alone in the Dark (2008), though it is obviously very early.

I hadn't really checked this out because I assumed it would just be another disappointment to the franchise. Hopefully I'm wrong.

It looks like the kind of game to buy at half price or less during a sale
Agreed, though I'm biased as I rarely ever pay full price for big studio games anymore. GTA 5 was the last one if you don't count the SS Remake kickstarter. Indie and sales have forever spoiled me...I have to want a game (or to support the devs) pretty direly to pay full price, and this ain't it.

Funny that you say that, though...UTM agrees:

Not a bad game per se, just not a great one.

Yes, but peppergomez is like Zarathustra in that he doesn't think anything outside first-person is immersive.
I make an exception for RPGS like Disco Elysium and Badlers Gate and games like XCom but otherwise, yes. Especially a game where exploration and gunplay are the majority of the gameplay. First person is much more immersive.

The original was not so much 3rd person like we see now, but more like where the camera would have been if this was a movie style. Which was used to create the tension

Making it your usual above the shoulder, I do not know, the original way would have took a lot of work for expected size of modern game too. And you have traditionnal over the shoulder type camera, usually would not be much work to allow first person....

"Embracer Group has shut down Swedish studio Pieces Interactive after 17 years, just three months after it launched the reboot of Alone In The Dark.

After going on an ill-advised shopping spree of developers, Embracer has already shut down Saints Row developer Volition and TimeSplitters’ Free Radical Design, amongst others, as part of its ‘restructuring programme’ following the collapse of a $2 billion investment deal.

Last month, Embracer Group stated, in a financial report, that Alone In The Dark had ‘performed below management expectations’. This was after reports of layoffs at the studio back in April, a month after it launched."

Par for the course based on how 2023 and 2024 have been for gaming studios
The layoffs and closures will just keep coming sadly

It seems that developers of triple-A-ish titles go out of business if their most recent game fails commercially.

This isn’t good - because people… and I’m assuming studios… learn huge lessons from making mistakes. If a developer can’t make mistakes then it can’t evolve.

Also, wouldn’t this prevent a major studio from taking chances and attempting to innovate?

It does prevent major studios from taking chances and innovating which is why most AAA games are sequels or copies of other games.

The problem is AAA games costs 10s or even 100s of millions of dollars to make. You can't just oopsie that amount of money and expect to get more. It's a business and the thousands of people creating the game are expecting to get paid for their work.

Most of the innovation comes from indy developers making games as a passion project in their parent's basement or in their free time as they also work a regular full time job.

If you look at the history of games and what were really innovating it's actually been like this for decades.

Was this a triple a game? based on the production values it didn't look it
The ish is important here certainly not clean cut AAA, in some aspect like the hot at the moment voice-acting cast it has a triple A ish kind of to it, but to me it seem a strong clean cut AA title, maybe even -AA (or what game would be ?) or should have been, if they spent 9 figures on this it was a mistake.

The difference of ressource between this and grand theft auto, elder scrolls 6, Assassin Creed, call of duty, fifa must be so large that we would need new name, like AAAA for Grand Theft auto 6, because putting it in the same category than Alan wake 2 or Alone in the dark feel a bit silly.

Apparently in 2017 they only had 13 employee even if it was a 4 years full on dev project and grew a bit since, it would have been a small studio game and that used an pre-made game engine (UE) to boot.
