Alienware m11x

Just saw one of them in person... Looks pretty flimsy and quite heavy for it's size, but definitely a quality product, considering the other products on the market... Looks nice too.

DO get the SSD. DO NOT get the SSD from Dell. They aren't going to use the best drives, they're going to use the drive with the lowest price du jour.

You should get an OCZ Vertex 2. Make sure you're getting the latest model, because that's the one with the all important best-in-class controller. For six or seven hundred dollars, you could have a 200gb or 240gb drive. (I forget which one is the latest gen)

Do your research. Anand (anandtech.com) is the SSD king.

Well I ordered my MX11 R2 this weekend, with EPP and $100 off, it came out to $1011 with tax, shipping was free, and it listed every single shipping option as free! So I selected next day of course :D

i7, 4 GB RAM, 160GB HD (going to upgrade to SSD, so why waste money on a bigger HD).

Also ordered a alienware sleeve for $24 after discount, free shipping, the weatherproof one, figured $24 isn't too bad, I know you can get cheap ones for $10 but whatever.

Now I just have to decide if I want to go with my Intel 160GB SSD that is in my desktop (and just use my regular 7200 HD for the desktop) which would save me money or if I want to spend another $430-$650 to get another Intel or larger SSD. Just not sure how much space I will need. I figure a 160GB SSD, is really only 104 GB of usable space, since W7 recognizes 149GB and they say to only use 70% of SSD space... I have a regular desktop so I don't need to store everything on it, and intense gaming will be done on the desktop, this is just for web, travel, and casual gaming on the couch. But for travel it would be nice to have music, a few pics of the family, and a few videos (I think the videos are the killer especially if HD).

friend ordered one with the core i5 so he can use the optimus

friend ordered one with the core i5 so he can use the optimus

? both the i5 and i7 use optimus, the only notebook cpu that can't use optimus is the quad core i7, the one MX11 has is a dual core...

right now i configured the i7 with 4gig, everything else default + bluetooth and it comes to $952 shipping and tax included (lol Oregon no tax)

I might finally bite

Yah the i7 and i5 both utilize optimus.

hmm he had told that only the i5 could do optimus and that the i7 couldn't.. i only took his word for it.. didnt really look into it

I received my first one today. This is the one with the SU7300, 4GB RAM and 250GB HDD. I am waiting for the second one with the i7, 8GB RAM and 160GB HDD. When I get that one, I am willing to run benchmarks for anyone that is interested. Just let me know what you would like me to run. I offer, because I know there have been a lot of questions about performance difference of the new CPUs.

For anyone wondering, I needed a laptop for work anyway, so I decided to just keep the first one for work use and ordered a second for gaming purposes and general home use. I must say, that I was concerned about comments that said it was flimsy, etc. Yes, it is plastic, but no, it is not flimsy. It feels remarkably solid and is well built.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I ordered two 500GB 7200rpm HDDs from Newegg and will be ghosting the existing HDDs to the new ones. So there will be no difference between the two systems there. Just the RAM and CPU.

Supreme Commander and Crysis (or Metro 2033). I figure those are the extremes of the CPU load vs GPU load spectrum (respectively).

could you or someone else check to see if either have gigabit?

Saw a few in person at E3 today. Hate the keyboard, hate the trackpad, but I love how much performance they packed into such a little package. If they can fix the physical aspect of the notebook it would be a homerun for me.

I'm actually liking both the more I use them. The KB is a bit narrow, but not overly so. I actually like the texture on the trackpad.

Getting some games installed, impressions later.

Well, it plays BFBC2 perfectly fine at native res on medium!
To me I has to lower everything to low settings and still got none playable fps.

Yeah, the ULV i7's seem to be much more capable than the core2's. Probably due to being able to clock up when needed.

Edit: Yes, got soft-touch. I'll take some pics tonight after work.

Hmm, I don't remember ordering a large non-descript box of porn....so this must be my new laptop! (Oh, intel sticker, that might give it away.)

DSCF2258.JPG

It could be dangerous in there, here, take this.

DSCF2259.JPG

Oh shit it's an alien! Hopefully sans-probe.

DSCF2260.JPG

Crazy moon writing.

DSCF2261.JPG

Something lurks beneath!

DSCF2262.JPG

Oh, it's just a bag of ground up aliens.

DSCF2263.JPG

Another non-descript black box :D

DSCF2264.JPG

Hey look! This one does more than the last black box!

DSCF2266.JPG

Uhoh, someone made it angry!

DSCF2267.JPG

Ummm........

DSCF2269.JPG

Choices choices.

DSCF2271.JPG

Soft touch.

Comes with free angles!

I like the matte black. The mad fingerprintiness of the glossy black R1 was the reason I went with the silver.

Wow I didnt even notice the matte black, does look alot better, I hated swiping my R1 down constantly.

do fingerprints not come up at all on the R2? If someone can confirm or whatever, i hear it's annoying

So I'm going to ask again since my question never got answered. Has anyone tried this laptop with a Dell 3007WFP-HC? I assume it would be done with a HDMI to DVI adapter/cable. I'm looking to get one of these, but only if it works with my 30" LCD.
I haven't tried it, but i don't see any problem. Don't forget that the M11X has a DisplayPort output too.

You've got both the HDMI to DualLink DVI, and the DisplayPort to DualLink DVI options.

Why are so many people getting hung up about it not having gigbit ethernet? I cannot remember the last time I had a laptop hooked up to a wired network connection...

Do you travel at all? Ever copied a dozen dvd rips to your laptop? Ever had to do it the morning of your flight?

Yeah that. :)

If I'm in the market for a sub 1,000 laptop to game on at the native res (as in I won't use a monitor) and I'm fine with the screen size, would this be the way to go?

I'm having a hard time finding much else that's better, but I could just be looking in the wrong places. Any thoughts?

I would be all over it if they just offered a matte screen, if I'm lucky maybe it'll be an option with the the next version. :(

These always make me nervous when it comes to removal later. Does the glue mess up the screen? Will it get into seams permanently?
There is no glue - they simply "cling" to the screen in the same way that clingfilm sticks to your dishes...

Removal is as simple as peeling off. Surely you've used one on your mobile phone in the past ?

Man, that's starting to make me regret getting my UL30VT...I mean, they're not competitors or anything, I know...but still.

What kind of battery life does the M11x with an i5 or i7 get when not gaming?

Just got my m11x this past week an i already sold it. I loved the performance an form factor but it just felt cheap an it was ugly. If i could get this in a generic laptop case it would be the best laptop i have ever owned.

Click through. It says it uses silicone glue:

The protector uses silicone glue which allows easy attachment and reapplication of the protector.
