Alien Isolation.... Any good?

Maybe I'll give this a shot.I dismissed it when it came out.Cause it sounded like you could only run and hide and that didn't sound enjoyable to me. I noticed there's a lot of d l c for it but it doesn't seem to add new storyline content so much as it is challenges challenges with this that in the other. Is that DLC easily skipped?Or is it legitimately new game content with new maps and story.

Isn't this the kind of game where you can't do anything except hide and run?
Pretty much. It would be way better with an ample supply of big guns and ammo, imo… maybe an aliens ( 2nd movie ) type game where you go in to rescue the colonists or something.. “stop your grinnin’ and drop your linen!”

Two are worthy IMO:

Crew Expendable, included in the "Nostromo Edition", relives a scene from Alien and involves the player controlling Ripley, Dallas or Parker attempting to flush an Alien from the Nostromo's air vents into the ship's airlock. Last Survivor, which was originally made available to players who pre-ordered at certain retailers, is set during the film's finale and involves the player controlling Ripley as she tries to activate the Nostromo's self-destruct sequence and reach the escape shuttle.

Most of the remaining ones just introduce challenge maps etc.

The game is awesome if you're a fan of stealth games, or Alien, but if either of those were the case you'd probably already own it. :p It's far more hide and seek than shooty shooty but even if it's not your typical fare, it has been on sale for as little as $2 or something silly and at that price it's worth picking up for the visuals and atmosphere alone. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but the one thing it does amazingly well is feel like Alien.

I want to say, they super nailed the vibe ... it's amazing. I just hate the whole hiding in lockers thing.. but having watched people play the game through it's not all about that... there are alternate game modes I need to try too.

The first modern PC game I ever played was the original Thief back in 1998 or so, but since then I've become meh about pure stealth games, don't have as much patience these days for slowly creeping around
Still I think I will give this a try if there is more to it than just hiding

I haven't played this in years but isn't there a point where you stop hiding once you get a flamethrower or some kind of weapon?

It's been forever, but I think I remember that any weapons are a temporary deterrent at best...

You can never outright, permanently rid yourself of threats.

It's a very tense game, and the AI makes a deliberate effort to keep you pressured, but give you just enough room to gasp for air

You're not guaranteed to be safe just because you sneak everywhere.

There's kinda an ebb and flow to it

but you don't have to hide all the time...once you get that weapon you can fight a little bit and the alien will run away or you can run away...it's much better then having to hide all the time

Just don't get too comfortable, I'm pretty sure I remember that it adapted if you repeatedly spooked it with the flamethrower and it'll eventually get really, really aggressive

Same if you hide constantly. Eventually it'll start getting extra picky with searching.

The AI is really good

This game pissed me off more than any other game I ever played.
I hated it with a passion, I shit talked the game the whole time I played it.
The game cheesed ME, more times than I can count.
I cried "Give me a fucking break!", "bullshit!" and "cheating bastards!" every 20min.

But I couldn't wait to play it at the end of the day.
It was like a cold, hard addiction that was killing me little by little, but I had to have more.
This is the best way I can describe this game.

I now have the Complete Collection, and I'm read to cry like a little bitch.

Just finished ALIEN: Isolation for the sixth time since I first bought almost 10 years ago. Still fun and looks good but it deserves a remaster and real time tracing.

That being said I mainly played it again to clear my mind of the total crap that is ALIEN: Romulus. Take a drink every time you saw fan service and you would die from alcohol poisoning within the first half-hour. I didn't think it was possible but somehow the director put all 4 ALIEN movies, the two Prometheus films, and the ISOLATION game through a blender to make his garbage of film. Many of the scenes made me roll my eyes and think, "seriously, why?"

Very disappointed. Was not scared nor thrilled and was tempted to walk out of the movie. Also didn't care for any of the human characters. WTF?! This seems like a common theme in media these days, no idea why.

I drove home from the theater realizing there will never be a good ALIEN film that is at least equal to the first 2 films nor the same for a game like Isolation.

I decided to pick this up since it was cheap, but it's not my normal type of game playing. I like shooters. I'm stuck at the medical facility. I found the code, but when I leave the office, the alien comes into play. I've tried a few times, but I keep getting discovered by the alien and die on the spot.

You can't hide or use a Molotov cocktail on the ALIEN? If not, sounds like an odd bug which the game does have but they are rare in my experience.

I think he’s just experiencing normal gameplay, lol. There were some challenging spots for me, too, until I either got lucky or started to learn how the game’s AI works. Just have to keep trying. Try using different tools/strategies if you’re stuck, not just sneaking past.

Noisemakers work great in medical as well.
I've also got stuck there before and learned the alien's pattern of circling the bays then going back up into the ceiling. It's all about the cheese.

Yeah it's very difficult to just sneak there. I think I used a noisemaker and walked a bit to get out of there. Also best to wait until you see it in a room, then it goes back into the vent, THEN throw the noisemaker. Gives you that extra bit of time.

They snuck in some Isolation into Romulus too. The scene where the huggers got distracted by a flare? The Romulus/Remus space station itself reminded me of Sevastapol, although all of SciFi has borrowed that design since the 70s, I guess.

I appreciated Romulus from a technical standpoint. I liked the aesthetics and sets they came up with. Even the zero-grav scene(s) seemed to work. With exception to the deep fake. Someone should have told them "No." to using deep fake tech. Just hire a real actor and put them in prosthetics. You don't have to have a familiar face for that role. Heck, the best acting in the whole film came from the actor portraying the older synthetic model.

I thought the first 30 mins of Romulus was great and then at the first sight of the deepfake they kind of lost me. I could never recover after that. I had adjusted my expectations from that point forward, which is a shame, because the first 30 mins was shaping up, in my mind, to being something fresh and original.

Yeah, the fan servicing did not go unnoticed. I'm curious to the opinion of someone where Romulus is their first Alien movie. The only logic I can come up with is that Romulus was meant for them. Maybe there was too much studio tampering with its production? I know Scott himself produced the film. Maybe he sabotaged it?

I'd like to see what this director can come up next by genuinely using feedback from this film. If the former was a case of too many cooks in the kitchen, then I think he can probably pull it off.

I mentioned that but they failed to sneak in a good musical score too. The first 3 ALIEN films and the Prometheus films all had good soundtracks that fit the film but it looks like they cheaped out on this one film by making it unmemorable.

This stupid movie threw me into nerd rage :banghead:
