I'm looking to upgrade my 9500 and I'm wondering if this will be a good card.
I don't really care about the all in wonder part, but it's the only x800 card I can find thats not
over $200.

I've got an A7N8X deluxe and a 2500+

I'd like to get better gaming performance, and from what I've read
the X1600 isn't that great compared to the 800 stuff.

Any thoughts?
I'm hoping to squeeze another year out of my box before building a new system.

Ive been gaming for a year or more on mine, and have no plans to upgrade. Still haven't found a game I couldn't run with most eye candy turned on at good framerates. Doom 3 engine games run REALLY well for me.
 
A positive about the AIW X800XT over the regular X800XT is that for some reason, ATI used 2ns RAM on it, which means...almost a for sure overclock to 1.2Ghz on the RAM.
 
You will definitely have no problems playing most all your games with the AIW x800xt card, but bear in mind before you purchase & install the card that the performance or Overdrive Tab is NOT supported in the AIW cards.

So just d\l the latest AIW ATI 6.8 drivers by themselves and forget about installing the CCC, and just d\l and use ATI TOOL TRAYS, for Ocing your card.

I'm figuring I'll do better with an x8xx card than with a X1600. I really just want to get a good upgrade moving from my 9500 without breaking the bank.

Now I have to ask the dumb question....
which is better?

the AIW, GTO, or 850Pro?

all are within my price range, but I haven't researched video cards in about 3 years.

The AIW is better. It should clock past X850XTPE speeds, at least for sure on the RAM and most likely on the core.

Yep. The 850 pro and the GTO don't have as many pipelines, so if you overclock the x800xt you will get the biggest benefit.

Actually, an unlocked X850Pro (I believe only the vivo models carry 16 pipes with 4 disabled) is essentially an X850XT, and with a better cooler can be overclocked up to X850XTPE speeds and beyond.
 
Unlocked or locked X800GTO, the AIW X800XT is gonna go further than a X800GTO since it has 2ns RAM.
 
AIW X800XT has 16 pipelines. All the other sub 175.00 cards (X850 Pro, X800GTO) are 12 pipeline cards.

AIW X800XT looks to be the best price/performance, especially if the overclocking works out.

Are the 850pro vivo's still unlocking regularly? If so, that might be the best bet, but you always run the risk of one or more of the pipelines not functioning properly. Same if you try to unlock the 800gto. The safest bet is the x800xt, and you get the TV features for free.
 
I put the Zalman cooler on my X800XT AIW and haven't had any problems clocking it to 550/1100, and it still holds it own in any of the games I am playing.

Similar here. I put an arctic cooling silencer on it, and mine is running 565/1150. It's still a good card. If the OP has dealt with a 9500 for this long, an x800xt will definitely get you until dx10.

That actually is where I was planning on buying. Unfortunately, afte finding it there, a day or two later it was out of stock. I haven't checked in a few days though. I also saw it at NewEgg for a similar price.

Might go with the egg because I need to get a new psu as well. With or without the card, my psu is in need of an upgrade.

I'll probably grab it this weekend or sometime next week.

I just bought this card from buy.com for $159 shipped. They still have it in stock. I love it. Playing FarCry @ 1680x1050 with everything on High no problems. My CPU is only a Barton 2500 running at 2200Mhz.

Those cards are very bad overclockers. 130nm process at its max. I think I only got 512/512 with stock cooling. People with aftermarket cooling are getting upto 550. I don't want to risk removing the heatsink though since this is how I killed my 9800NP. I'd much rather tone down the eye candy.

This isn't totally accurate. I got 550/550 with the stock cooler, and an Arctic Cooling Silencer and Swiftech Ramsinks have me running comfortably at 570/570. A ~15% overclock is nothing to sneeze at, but don't count on any miracles with the XT.
 
True the r420 isn't the r480 but then again its better than the r430 :p . It seems the r420 has the greatest variation in terms of its OCability everything from 512 as one stated to 585 has been posted here at [H]. Anyway you slice it its still pretty darn good

Where did you get your aftermarket cooling from? That's a nice increase. What paste did you use on the GPU and RAM?

The reason I got this was the difference in noise levels, which was 100% worth it imho. If you go this route, be careful about how you attach the ramsinks....a couple of them bump right against the Silencer...so pay close attention before you actually attach the things to the RAM. You will want to be ever so slightly over the "outside" edge of the RAM chip. You will see what I mean if you get to that point.

The X800XT AIW is cake to remove the HSF. Unlike your 9800, there are no plastic pins that you have to pinch together to get them out. There is a metal srping on the backside, and in the ends are small screws. Simply remove the screws and the HSF drops right off...no muss, no fuss.
 
Cool, thanks guys. I'm going to give it a try. One more thing. I noticed the ram sinks came with thermal pads already installed. So I just use those instead of paste. What did you use on the GPU?

Yes, I just used the thermal pads for the ramsinsk. For the HSF I used some AS.
