hello all,

lately, my system has been slowing me down when editing/encoding/playback videos in adobe premiere. but i was told by friend that my cpu can handle the problem and just upgrade motherboard and new ram that uses ddr3.i am given a budget of $600ish.
so should i ...

1) should i keep the q9550 and upgrade MB that uses newer ram
2) buy a 1090t with 6 cores ,MB,RAm
3) buy a i7 860/930 with HT, MB, Ram (which socket should i choose? 1366/1156)
4) buy SSD, will this help?

thanks for you help and time .

Which version of premiere are you using? 64bit windows or 32bit? How much ram? Are you OC'ing your Q9550?

Premiere CS4/CS5 can use more than 4GB ram and 4 cores as well as see benefit from 64bit windows.

Upgradewise if your doing encoding especially premiere a i7 930 will help. If you have a Fry's or MC near you, you should be able to fit a i7 930, x58 mb and 6gb DDR3 into $600. W/o MC your going to go over $600.

If your not OC'ing your cpu try that first. Depending if you have more than 4GB of RAM you could upgrade to 64-bit windows and add more RAM. Though any investment into DDR2 won't be able to be used on a i7 platform.

Don't know if 6 cores will be an advantage in Premiere, I also think i7 is clock for clock more efficient. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

SSD will only help if your writting frames to the disks e.g. as part previews or if the read/write to disk is longer than the frame rendering/compression or scratch disk. It can't hurt, but you need to be able to put your whole project on it to have the full benefit. I'd increase dram first then add an SSD unless your getting one also to accelerate your OS and program loading.

Option 1 won't make any difference whatsoever. The higher speed RAM won't make that much of a difference to justify the costs of upgrading.

Option 4 will help somewhat but that should be part of your next upgrade as sfsilicon noted

Option 3 is not that good either since the 1090T is not worth the extra $100 over the 1055T at all.

Now whether or not to choose between an Intel or AMD hex-core setup depends on one question: Will you be overclocking? If so, go the Intel route. If not, go the AMD route. AMD's Phenom 1055T outperforms the Core i7 930/860 in most video editing/encoding apps at stock speeds. However the second you start overclocking, the Core i7 route is the better choice as the Core i7s offer significantly more performance while overclocked than a Phenom 1055T at stock or overclocked.

Now if you are planning on overclocking, whether or not to go with the Core i7 930 depends on whether or not you live near a Microcenter as sfsilicon noted. If you don,t then a Core i7 930 route is not possible for $600. So in that case, your best bet would be the Core i7 860 or the $40 cheaper but only 200Mhz slower Xeon X3440 CPU (yes it'll work with most consumer motherboards)

I wouldn't listen to that friend anymore....seriously.

Not sure how much an ssd will help with that program, the i7 might be the way to go as it seems to do really well with that program. You will notice NO difference with ddr3 ram.

If your going the premiere pro route then GPU is more important than CPU because of the murcury playback engine which uses CUDA. So this means that your 295 can be used. But only half of it, as SLI still isn't supported.
I saw the test footage of premeire pro cs5 on a 16 core system and without theGPU acceleration it filled them all up, which would suggest more then 4 cores. But with the GPU accelaration the CPU use was minimal. Even on a GTX 260, q9000 Quad I can get 12 HD layers working in realtime. Though currently youll need to do a little workaround to get the GPU to work.

Thank you all for the reply's.

i have decided to upgrade and get the i7 930 ,x58 and 6 gigs of ram. And yes, i will be overclocking the i7 930. i live 4 hours away from microcenter so its np picking one up besides it was time for me to take a road trip. in the mean time ..now i need to choose a Motherboard and Ram online and try to get some BCB before it ends soon. Thanks agian.
