SATA or IDE?
You may want a case adapter and the SATA power adapter.
There's also IDE power adapters.
You may find me stupid or foolish, but I would like to install a DVD unit that lasts longer.
As they are they seem a disposable item, lasting a year at most.

Maybe. There's not enough data to prove or disprove that besides using anecdotal evidence.I think units inside laptops last a lot more. Am I wrong?
Yep!If using the cheapest slim DVD burner on Newegg right now + the adapters that Old Hippie mentioned, you're looking at a total of $52. Considering that you can get a desktop DVD burner for $18 these days, doesn't make much sense to buy that slim DVD drive for a regular case.
Yep!
I've never seen anything to indicate that the slim drives outlast the regular DVD drives.
I was going to mention something about the larger drive dissipating heat more efficiently which will probably extend it's life but I didn't know that drive speed was reduced to achieve the same thing. In fact, the slim DVD drives have their speeds reduced because they tend to heat up faster than standard DVD drives at every given speed.

Sounds correct to me.I looked at the slim DVD drives: The write AND read speeds of the slim drives is limited to 8x for DVD media whereas those on a desktop DVD drive are at least 16x.
