I don't know if anyone has noticed, but the active folders list is growing. A week ago we had just over 800 and now we are over 850! It's great to see the activity increasing. Not only is this good for the science, but it helps us hold the EVGA team off a bit longer.

To all new folders and old folders returning I'd like to say:

Fold On!

Awesome, I also noticed the increase, our PPD is on an uptrend as well. Welcome New folders and returnees. Winter is not even here yet and we are headed up! Thanks for the info Dookey!

Fold on.

Welcome to all the newcomers. I actually just fired up my video cards again the other day. Its not heating up the room much so Ill keep them going. The rest of the farm is going to have to wait until it gets cooler though.

Fold on brothers and sisters!

Welcome to the new folders. If you make 1k, 10k or 100k ppd thank you for folding with us!

Fold on!

nice to see new faces.. btw with all the new people showing up.. if anyone is in need of realtime help or are bored lazy people that dont sleep like the rest of us we do have an IRC channel up..

link below is for those of you that already have an irc client installed for quick connecting..
irc://irc.dp.cx:6667/hardocp

for people that want to manually add it..

server: irc.dp.cx
port: 6667
Channel #hardocp

disclaimer: no this is not an official hardocp IRC channel this is just a channel for people to get together and talk about folding/non folding related topics or just to kill time.. what you talk about on the irc channel stays on the irc channel and can not be used against you on the forum..

This one time on irc, sirmonkey had this lamp shade on his head and...

I think a large reason for why there are all these new members is the computer giveaway. :p

To be honest, that's why I joined. I am still trying to figure things out though.

I am folding continuously on a Pentium D, and only getting around 120 ppd.

I've been reading about video cards such as the GeForce 460 giving around 9,000 ppd. This is such a huge difference compared to a processor! Almost two orders of magnitude.

I am also thinking about setting up a different client to take advantage of both cores (right now I don't have the multi-core client running, I just downloaded the first one on the list)...

Anyway, seems like there are quite a few options for tweaking your folding output.

I also want to fold on the graphics card that is in this computer (Quadro FX 3450/4000 SDI), but I've read that people haven't really been very successful with getting the GPU core to run on Quadro FX cards.

Is this true?

Hamster: Which Pentium D processor do you have and what speed is it running at?

Unfortunately, what you are reading about the Quadro FX cards is true.

I don't think you'll be able to fold on the 3450. It's GF7 based so pre-CUDA.

Welcome to the [H]orde!!

Unfortunately, that's about as much as can be expected from one P4 core.

'Tis true. Video cards, especially recent nVidia cards are monster performers. Even more would be the -bigadv SMP client with a recent processor or two. With that you'll see nearly an order of magnitude higher performance than even a video card.

I am also thinking about setting up a different client to take advantage of both cores (right now I don't have the multi-core client running, I just downloaded the first one on the list)...
You can just install another client. It should double your production.

Absolutely.

I don't know about recent Quadros but in the past there were people who had run the GPU client on them. Performance was all over the place though. Your card has to support Cuda as Angelus mentioned above. I'm not certain what you'll likely to expect, maybe someone else here knows...?

Thanks!

So would you recommend getting the SMP client or just installing a second regular client? Are there advantages to one versus the other?

Actually, the "FX 4000" is an 'older' Quadro (~2003-5ish). I think there is also a new card that's just called "Quadro 4000."

It's kind of confusing...

Either way, I just checked it out on Nvidia's website, and my card is not listed as having 'CUDA'.

Is that the only factor that determines if a card will run F@H?

(here is the link.)

This is why I asked you earlier which CPU you had. We need more information about which Pentium D you have and how fast you have it clocked.

CUDA is mandatory, so I'd say yes providing the card is fast enough in general performance. To clarify what I meant about Quadros in the past was previous generation cards but CUDA supporting.

I am having a great time folding for the [H]orde.

It is also really cool to see some leadership here keeping this team on top form.

Congrats to you all. You know who you are.

I was getting about 860PPD with the -smp switch on the 6.30 client on my Pentium D. I just threw my old 8800GTS in it and now it puts out 3200-3500 PPD depending on the WU. I don't even fold on the CPU anymore.

The Quadro FX 3450 is a 6800GT so it does not support cuda.

Is your 8800GT the G80 core? If not then crank those shaders up..I was getting over 5K PPD with my 8800GT..

i'm going to bring all my rigs online in about a month or 6 weeks. i'll create a thread then to get tips :D

NIce, matrix! Hope to see you moving the ranks soon!

Fold On!

I think a bunch of people have started digging anti mowing bunkers.

We can't wait, as we need to make sure to make it as difficult as possible for eVGA to take us down!

They've been ramping. That's why the overtake date has been frozen at 1.7 months for some time despite our big surge recently. They also have a lot in reserve judging by a recent thread posted on their forum about us and the claims made by the members there. Also, the first of the month is quickly approaching. So, it's still pretty much an uphill battle, a battle that is being fought between two Goliaths.

Question: Is the evga team based on real users for team members only, or is the team full of evga corporate members?

Not that it matters since ultimately we are after the same goal, so it is really just curiosity.

We have wondered about that at times.

Might have convinced the Fiancé to let me upgrade my server to an i7. It will have server duty and security duty so it won’t be fully dedicated to Folding, but it should definitely help... Just got to finalize the details and costs. Sorry an SR-2 would make a lovely server but WAY out of budget range currently.

I lurk over there and saw that thread too. We just do what we can though, as at least we know that we got to where we got by doing this for the right reasons. Most of their team does it for the right reasons too, and it is a good bit of fun. I just wish I could do more, but i'm going to be broke for a while as I bought some jewelry to boost my image at my new job selling fine jewelry.

Now that colleges are getting back into session, I wonder how this will affect them since many college folders don't have to pay for their electricity.

You convinced your finance to let your upgrade your server to an i7. That means you have a pass to upgrade to a Core i7 980x or 970!

Now convince her to send me one :D

My Main Gaming/Developement box is an i7 965 , if I could only get the unlocked multiplier to stick I could over clock it more than 4072MHz

Looking at the 960 now that the price just dropped, otherwise 930. Don't have the money to drop it on a 6 core, but would love to.
