hello people. ive decided to build my dream computer, so i ordered 20 intel x25 160gb SSDs. im planning to run these in raid using 1 or 2 raid cards.

i need you guys to give me suggestions for raid cards.

the budget is 1000$ for 1, 2 or 3 cards, and these cards must be run through a pci-e x1, x4, x8, or x16 slot.

the motherboard im using is an msi gd80 with 3 unused pci-e x16 slots

ps. im planning to upload some photos of this setup in the future if you are interested
 
Wouldn't the expander limit the bandwidth reducing potential performance?

i see ur point. idk why im doing this anyways... got some the ssd's for 100 bucks a pop from a local store so i bought all the ones they had
 
lol, yea please do post pics when you get all those drives. it does seem kind of silly.
 
You're looking at $1200-1400 for a 24 port card to get the most throughput out of that kind of setup...
 
Sorry, I thought that had raid0/1 1E like some other LSI cards that are not their megaraid line.
 
the 9265 for sure is UBER! get fastpath and damn it is hard to beat :) i have tested it with a JBOD/expander, and seen no appreciable loss of bandwidth. I was able to saturate the device with both sequential AND random access. (2.7gb/s sequential, and 465,000 IOPS @512B)
this was with only four devices :)
 
@OP: If I were you I would keep 8 drives and get rid of the rest, if you're new to raid benchmarking and testing then you really owe it to yourself to spend some time getting up to speed and doing some more reading on raid cards, expanders, the best way to aggregate disks for your application, proper stripe size, etc.

Otherwise I can pretty much guarantee you're going to plug in 20 disks and wonder why your benchmarks are so low. For starters they won't scale linearly, especially if your parameters aren't optimized and you aren't using the absolute latest gen raid card. And for your usage scenario I'd suspect that past 8 drives (or probably even 4 drives) you're well into "diminishing returns" land anyway. There are smarter ways to "dream performance" than simply putting lots of disks in one big striped array.

thanks. im going to be keeping all of them. ive decided to not use all of the drives in a single array, and only raid up 4 of them. i have alot of data on some other hard drives and will be filling these ssds up quickly.
 
Can we get a pic. of all the boxes before you build the machine?

Those before and after pics always look neat. :)
