A home for my SR-2

Well I was poking around the forum and Spotswood was working on a very elaborate SR-2 water cooling case for someone. I asked since he would have the specs for the board form workign on this case if he was interested in a side project.

This is what he sent me:

teststation.jpg

Attached is a rough design of what I'm thinking of for your tech station. Details:

* All brushed/scratched aluminum construction: 3/4-inch square tubing, .125x1-inch u-channels and .10-inch thick sheet
* 1-inch tall standoffs
* Rubber feet
* Rubber mat on bottom shelf
* Not modeled: u-channels will be mitered at the corners; wiring slots around the edges of the MB; stainless steel (button or socket cap) screws will be used to attach the sheet to the u-channels; full-length threaded rod used to "attach" the square tubing together.
* I could ship this flat or pre-assembled to you.
* Paint / powder coating not included

I like it. Open air so it's easy to cool. I can go GPU crazy on it later and not worry about temps inside a case.

I was just thinking if anyone else that has picked up a SR-2 needed a home for their board we could go in on a group order. Make it easy on him and cheaper for us (possibly).

Otherwise what does the [H]orde think?

sounds interesting.. just with the stupid wifi at my new apartment complex didnt suck ass so i could load the picture..

I was gonna build something like that and put it on rails in a rack, but mine would be wood, cheap

price?

We had talked about a ball park, but I sent him back a PM asking for price for what he worked up here.

When he responds I'll post it. I also sent him a link to the thread, so maybe he will post here too.

just a thought, a design that supports 7 dual-slot video card would be really nice (like the folding milking machine), with just another stick hanging over the middle of the board that would be possible.

Looks good Kendrak...I'm sure AMD_Gamer will be freaked out, but it's better then a cardboard box;)

It looks nice, but I don't really see what you are gaining over a piece of plywood other than looking better. I am interested in what these would cost, though.

Mostly cable management and a support bar for the PCIe cards. There is a HDD rack that will mount to the under side as well. And I'm asking him to have mounts for 2x 120mm fans. This will allow cool air over the board, 2x H50s (or similar system) or a 2x1 rad for a full blow water cooling setup.

I'm actually amdgamer. I noticed that this forum also has an AMD_Gamer which is pretty wierd but awesome. I noticed that he has visited my profile too.

Yes i'll freak out as its still naked. Better than a pizza box though.........

Looks pretty much like my plywood design, but due to the nature of the build I'd probly use furniture grade white oak, to keep it classy

looks like what I built for the original skynet, that octal-socket nightmare lol
altho I had ventilation holes under the chipset and each CPU, and built in supports that touched the CPU mounts on the bottom to relieve stress on the pcb. Fans on the bottom brought cool air up and hit the bottoms of the chips, using corosponding fan sizes for each hole and a fan controller for the fans to kill noise....

Damn, I wish I had my right hand back, I'd build another to show you. Ofcourse, my last one was a demo build and made from mdf so it didn't look as good as yours lol

one issue will be cable management, you'll need some real long runs to hit those leads and keep it looking nice tho. Anyone know if using extensions would lower power quality?

Keep it up tho, for a person planning on adding GPUs this looks great!

Do you have a diagram with positions for the standoffs tho?

yeah now that i finally got the bloody picture to load.. id say 1 inch standoffs might be a tad bit tall.. i would go with half inch or 3/4 inch at the most.. then cut holes below the cpu in case you have to use a bolt through mount for the H50's so that you can get access to them without removing everything.. but other then that it looks pretty slick..

I'd be interested in one for my test bench depending on the price. Especially given how some boards are now coming in XL-ATX which doesn't fit my E-ATX Top Deck testing station.

Dan, do you have the standard Top Deck chassis, or the large one? It measures 13"x14"x13.5", but I'm not sure what the exact dimensions of the SR-2 is either since I've not seriously considered getting one.

As soon as I seen the drawings above I thought of the Top Deck units myself.

I love test benches for easy accsess and we folders are always mess'n with our boxen.
There are no products out there that will work with a SR-2 unless you buy a mobo tray and mod it to something and I wanted something a bit more refined.

Here is the SR-2 Size. It is a big-un.

That 15" dimension is brutal...it is too deep for even my full depth 4U case with the drive cages in place.

I happen to like Spotswoods work. A lot actually. I saw the Wood SR-2 case he was doing and have been very intrigued. It didn't don on me to ask him about a tech bench. Thanks Kendrak for asking.

With that being said, do we have a price yet? I think I may have to jump on this band wagon :D

OMG!

Reminds me of the HSPC Tech Station...but much much bigger

BTW, is there anyone that is really considering putting 7 video cards on this monstrosity?:D

I have the large one. I got it because it could accommodate E-ATX motherboards. Now with XL-ATX boards coming out (not frequently, but they are) I need something larger.

Speak for yourself :p

Ever since I was able to get my rig bigadv stable at 3.46ghz, I don't think i've touched it or opened it at all after I had Micro Center move everything from my old Coolermaster Cavalier to my current CoolerMaster HAF922 case. No tinkering for me, but I tend to be a set it and forget guy. I follow the golden rule of if it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)

Well I have a few rigs that have parts that I can swap around.

For example I'm selling to my cousin:

PSU from my WHS
GPU from the HTPC
CPU from my main rig
Mobo, RAM, HSF from my 2nd i7 rig
HDD from Nexus

After a few months I will probably sell him my 275 and I'll pick up a 460 or 2.

I have other parts that are back up to these or will be consolidating rigs. I do this 2-3 times a year.

My systems are Franken Boxen. They are always getting swapped around. Cool part is my main rig goes from a i7 920 at 3.4 to a i7 930 that can do just under 4. Hehe it's a net upgrade for me and I get paid for the parts I'm selling off.

I guess that is also the advantage of having been at it for a while, as you end up with a bunch of parts. No Franken boxen for me though, as I don't really mess with stuff once it is working to my satisfaction. Even after I am finally able to free up enough funds for a second folding rig, i'll probably keep my current one running as is until something in it dies. I just hope it won't be soon.

Well it seems ~$160 is what he is quoting. Seems fair to me.

He also said he is going to figure out some fan mounts for it as well.

$160 is VERY reasonable considering MM is asking ~$80 for just a MoBo tray.

I would LOVE to see this thing with mounting hardware for 3x120 or 3x140 RADs so you can take your SR-2 under deep WC :D

With how much space there is on either side... should be quite easy.

Is this work station going to get you to pick up a SR-2?

I still have to wait a little bit. The last check I wrote for the deposit on the house had a lot of zeroes after it, plus I still have to write a rather large check to the fertility treatment clinic.

I am however starting a new project on Monday with 45 hours guaranteed and if I am able to do wrap up on my old client on the side, that would give me an extra 15 to 20 hours per week. That will make it easier to pay the other stuff off and then leave me with $3K for a new SR-2 rig. I think I am going to leave my sig rig alone and build the SR-2 separate.

With the demise of my second i7 rig and the arrival of 2685, I am reconsidering an SR-2. I could sell off my second i7 rig to cover some of the cost. I just sold my Norco RPC-4020 (to a fellow DC'er) so that is some money that can go to this. Actually the sale of the 4020 would pay for the bench and the coolers. Would just need the SR-2 and 2xE5620's.

The power draw would not be much more than the second i7 rig (it has a 9800GX2 in it). The PpD would definitely be higher. Hmmm.......

$160 is a steal considering the labour involved.

definitely.. i just wonder what the shipping cost on that beast is going to be.. though it would probably be cheaper to sell it completely stripped down then have the buyer rebuilt it which shouldnt be that difficult..

should be pretty easy to do.. take a 2 inch wide aluminum or steel plate the length of the rear bar on the motherboard tray section.. put 3 or 4 screw's along the top mounting it to the bar then 2 or 3 or 4 screws mounting the RAD plus fans to it so that the rads hanging below the bar with the fans either in push or push/pull mounted to the rad or sandwiched between the rad and aluminum/steel plate.. it wouldnt effect the temps for any of the hardware on the motherboard tray either.. wish i had my cad program installed id make something to show what im talking about but im headed to the store in a minute so i may do it later since i have nothing else to do tonight..

How fast will those E5620's go?
Their normal multiplier is 19 and their turbo multi is 20. So, if you get turbo to permanently engage (which appears to be no problem with the SR2), and you get to around 200 blck, which shouldn't be too much trouble, you should be looking at around 4ghz.
