Well I guess it is time to lift the veils on the real great secret project!! (subteam smubteam :p )

A while back when viper was getting the last round of contests together he wanted to make a really nice final prize as oppsoed to just a folder. Something that would make a nice show piece/gamer. So I offered to do a rather simple but I think nice mod for this project.

As it started out the project was going to be quick and easy because I was going to be doing the work using a waterjet and a CNC. Then problem one cropped up (wish I had pictures but alas I was to pissed to think to take them). The waterjet kept mangling the panels when I tried to cut intricate designs in the 1.0mm SECC steel. So I switched to plan B for the case:

The front panels and the motherboard side.

As you see everything in glorious red and black (or I hope so.......actually I am colorblind so I really hope it is red). The red lettering is same lettering that viper showed a while ago but painted red. It is .040 Aluminum cut on the CNC. The silver behind it is .025 Vinyl also cut on the CNC. I used outdoor sign adhesive to attach it along with a piece of paper on accident....I removed that before taking the last pics.

The window side:

*Yes that is a T-square next to the panel.

This is the side I had originally set to use the waterjet with until I ran into the issues I said earlier. I switched plans to doing a straight window with the same design as the other side but obviously attached to lexan and smaller. Again the red is .040 Aluminum, the silver drop .025 vinyl, and it was attached to the side with Epoxy. The moulding is also attached using epoxy.....now for the admission part of tonights program.

I was rather pissed when I couldn't get the waterjet to work so a buddy of mine suggested a plasma torch. Well boy does that work....but there are draw backs. First once you start cutting don't slow down....it will burn the metal instead of just cut it (this can be seen on the inside of the panel). Second, do not cut finished metal.....it does discolor! That is why the moulding is on there. Can't have any discoloring showing up......and now you know.

So with out any further ado......here are the pics from viper with it assembled.

So Congrats on the new system magnusvir!

If anyone has any questions, comments etc. Post them.

I would like to thank:

Viper
Schmave for the original file
My better half for putting up with the pieces everywhere

You are welcome magnusvir. Be sure to post some pics when you get it all from viper and it is setup.

Excellent work. Kinda makes me wish I could do stuff like that.

Anyone can do it. You just have to try, and have some scratch panels to work with. Take your time, and plan, plan, plan.

Sweet custom work, looks great.

When you get time how about one for everyone on the team?….Just kidding ;) :D

Simply a work of art guys. No discerning folder should be without one, but we wouldn't want to make you work that [H]ard! ;)

Looks great!

Very Nice Work!

I wanted to do a mod like that, but I haven't quite finished it.... or really started it either. Good for you for Git'n'r'done!!

Lucky man that magnusvir is... he better not start outproducing me

I just really read the title of this thread. Is there such a thing as a non-custom mod? :p

Non-custom falls under the "un-original" category in my book.

Geez, not sure how I missed this before it made it to the front page... But great job Spectre! Superb!

Well... you didn't have much time in-between the two. I contacted Steve as soon as I saw the link go up.

Looks like there was an entire day in between the starting of this thread and when I saw it on the front page about. I know I've been here in between then and now a couple times... ::shrug:: I saw it now, and thats all that counts, right?

Again, great job Spec!

That looks really awesome Spectre! I'm glad you could put the art work to good use. I just saw it on the front page and was like, wow, I guess he's done. Anyway, it looks really cool.

Viper, get your ass over to the Photography subforum and get some lessons!

Nice mod. Imagine a [H]ard trophy for the [H]ard dc'er of the year? Something useing this design would be cool me thinks....
