9850X3D Benchmarks

You jumped from a 9950X3D to this? If all you do is game, probably a side grade, and that would be at 1080p gaming. 2k or 4k and I doubt this adds much if anything at all. If you do anything with productivity tho, definitely a downgrade over a 9950X3D.

No, this is for my gaming PC at my parents house which currently sports a 5700x

I am going 9800X3D to 9850X3D (1080p / 360Hz / RTX 5090 rig) - not really bothered by "just" a 3% gain as it's a new CPU that probably fixes a lot of the dying CPU BS plus I can sell the 9800X3D and get about 75% of my money back. No brainer.

I highly doubt it, these are probably just binned chips, similar to the 13/14900ks.

I'll wait til the last gen of CPU is released for the AM5 platform. Absolutely no reason to upgrade from a 7800x3d.

It is the SAME chip, just binned higher. There is no new architecture or process node being used.

I'm also curious on recent reports of dying chips after they clamped SoC voltage to 1.3V. Wonder how many people unknowingly damaged their CPUs and IODs with insane motherboard "auto" voltage levels. This is also why outside PBO, I have set every single voltage manually. Took some extra time, but I know there is not "auto" black magic going on either.

Yes but it is a newer product. Could have updated microcode/etc.

I think what some of the members here are trying to caution is that the 9850X3D is just a 9800X3D with higher voltages that are going to potentially degrade the chip faster. Similar to the 14900KS which is just a overvolted 13900k. For the 9850X3D and the 14900KS the juice isn't worth the squeeze as it's well past the sweet spot point and accelerates degredation for miniscule gains at the cost of stability/longevity.

The SoC can handle double the voltage for a short time.
On my previous 9700x I was lucky enough to catch when the mobo bug and threw 2.54 V vSoC and only a clean cmos fixed it.

I'm thinking of jumping to AMD what is a good Motherboard for this chip?
If you have a Micro Center nearby - I HIGHLY recommend any open box mobos. You can save an absolute ton of money and I have always had a great experience. I currently run an ASUS X870E-E ($250 open box), Crosshair Hero X870E ($300 open box), ProArt X670E ($250 open box, was brand new), and B650E-F (new combo). I used to have a couple of ASRock boards but I chucked them due to CPU risk. Loved them, though...same open box story. High end $500+ boards for half price or less.

If you don't have Micro Center - MSI gets high marks overall and any $250 board with the features that you need is worth grabbing. AMD is AWESOME since you can upgrade the platform and you're not just stuck to one CPU gen.

Sold out and the listing is gone for Amazon...wonder what is up - will this be limited like a KS part??

AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D Review - The Best Just Got Better

REVIEW PROCESSORS
The AMD Ryzen 9850X3D builds on the already excellent 9800X3D without trying to shake up the market. Instead, it focuses on refining what already works. AMD delivers modest improvements with smarter tuning, and the same cache magic that gamers love. Thanks to a reasonable price increase, this processor will be a no-brainer pick for future high-end gaming rigs.”

Would be nice if they could prove -35 CO is 100% stable, I am betting it is not.

This is pure luck, but since we assume that these are pre-binned chips, it is very likely.
If we assume 100% stable, its not really that impressive. Its mostly the binned chip and massive negative curve offset providing the higher boost. I guess maybe that IS the point of these, but id see this more as a replacement for the 9800X3D and not an upgrade for anyone already on the platform.

Well Amazon says mine arrives Monday. It will be paired with a 9070XT and 32GB. It’s the last piece to the build. Guess I’ll start putting stuff together

It's the fastest gaming chip today so people will buy it versus anything else for new builds. It's a "KS" part for those that want the best.

“So vs 9800X3D, the 9850X3D is...
🔥
WAY Hotter⚡️WAY more Power Hungry
❌
NOT noticeably Faster”

but are we really good with our current cpu?

it’s actually obvious without hindsight?
I mean, if you need 3% more performance then yes - you need to sell your 9800X3D and get this. :) If someone has a 9800X3D and has the upgrade itch - go 9950X3D every time!

RE: the heat -

You guys have to look at the numbers. "Hot" is relative here. They're saying "hot" compared to the 9800X3D which is an ice cold CPU.

literally every temp shown is within spec, just not what we want...
and they gimped the cooler:

seems to be 0.5% at 4K

Same cooler i'll be using. Have any of the reviews mention SOC voltages?
not sure, i only watched the HC one above since im technically supposed to be working, but its a organization day with no kids so we're all slackin...

Holding out on my 5950x/AM4 until the 9950x3d2 comes out, although this is tempting. Might have to start the AM5 build with this and sell it later when the 9950x3d2 is out.

It's fine. It's literally a refresh of the 9800x3d we could just say, "awesome, thanks."

Especially in this market.

I have 3 other friends who I got to buy this based on my recommendation of having it, and they also love it.

Those msi x870e boards are pretty nice in that they have a way to disable the usb4 in favor of a second m.2 connected into the cpu...at least the tomahawk does. They really were thoughtful on the lane math on that board.

Amazon has open box boards too. Several years ago i got an x570s aorus master open box from amazon. There wasn't anything wrong with it at all. Super nice board.

I ordered this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CRF81BBC last night for like $125. They also had the x670e tomahawk for I think $175ish, which I like better when it comes to lane math, but this is for my sons, so lane math isn't as important so long as the 10gbe nic fits in someplace.

400 MHz for Intel is more than 400 MHz for x3D.
The optimal frequency for 7000/9000 is ~5500 MHz, so this is where the smallest difference between this "new" processor and the "old" one comes from.
Yes, for a single thread it can reach 5800 MHz (PBO) without any problems, but overall it is very similar to the old one.
Intel's KS is much better in terms of "binned" parts, yeah, both are just halo CPU's.
