Long story short, i have both of these video cards, which one should I use? And which one should I sell?

i game in 1900x1200.
Thanks guys

The GeForce 9600 GT is not based on the famous G92 chip, but on its little brother, the G94. The essential difference is that the G94 only has half the number of stream processors of the G92: 64. This pales in comparison to the 112 a "simple" GeForce 8800 GT 256 MB boasted, you're thinking. That's not untrue, but the shader frequency is higher (compared to the 8800 GT only, since the G92 on the 8800 GTS uses the same frequency), attaining 1625 MHz for these units (650 MHz for the rest of the GPU). But even at that frequency, the raw processing power of this G94 is still a full 38% lower than that of the 8800 GT.

Long story short, 9600GT is a junk 'value' piece of hardware nowhere even near the same ballpark in performance to an 8800GT.

for gaming the 8800GT, everything else the 9600GT. actually you can sell both of them buy a 4850 and be money ahead

Not true at all. The 9600GT trails the 8800GT by about 10-20%. Hardly a major difference, and definitely not "junk"

The OP should still keep the 880GT and sell the 9600GT.

20% can be the difference between 20FPS and 24FPS, or the difference of being above or below the generally accepted level of FPS. If you're a 30FPS kinda person, the difference between 24 and 30 FPS.

20% is a big difference.. Especially at a high resolution like 1900x1200 that the OP is stating.

Don't make the fatal mistake of putting the 9600GT in the same category of video card as the 8600GT.
The 9600GT is slower than the 8800GT, but it's hardly a "junk" card. And yes, they are in the same "ballpark" of performance.

+1 on selling both cards and buying a new card

--------------

But if you don't want to... keep the 8800GT and sell the paper weight 9600GT.

The 9600GT has HALF the shaders that an 8800GT does. Even after taking into account the faster clocks that the 9600GT runs, it is still 38% weaker in raw processing power than the 8800GT. That is nowhere near the same ballpark. I'm not making up that the G94 is the junk 'value' version of the G92. nVidia states that it is.

Sell both, and upgrade to a 4870 1gb or gtx 260.

Both of those cards will be significantly better at 1900x1200 resolution.

If you are loathe to do that, keep the 8800gt, it is a 10-20% advantage over the 9600gt

Do you look at benchmarks or just quote spec sheets?

The question is, do you look at benchmarks that are at the correct resolution?
The 8800GT destroys the 9600GT at 1900x1200. There is no '10-20%' it's pretty much '20%.'

I would have to agree and say sell both cards and upgrade to a 4870 1GB card, both of those cards won't get you very playable fps on modern games without lowering res. or quality.

To the one that stated my fps should be differenciating between 24 and 30, when playing in this resolution in call of duty 4, my fps stayed the same at 60fps.. This is why I was asking, which ones the better value, because in the end, i didn't loose any performance (or so ive noticed). And yes, i forgot to mention that I am also considering selling both and just buying a 260 or sometin.

Are you playing with maxed settings? Or have you lowered/ are they the same settings overall.

Now from my experience I went from an 8600gt (ddr2) to a gtx 260 (216) and at 1680x1050 it's a day and night difference. Now I have yet to try 1920x1200 but I'm sure it will perform superb at that res too. Basically saying get a gtx 260 and you're golden.

With GTX 260's going for $160-175 it's hard not to recommend selling both and just getting a new card instead.

9600gt isnt junk. its cheaper, and may be slightly slower in perf, but its still decent enough for most games that arent crysis/clear sky level. i myself had a 9600gt as my main card before the gtx260, and i dont have much to complain about. most games that are "less than" the latest release will play fine on max settings.

As an owner of a 9600GT, I am happy enough with it's performance in my HTPC. I don't really game with it, but I have tested it with Fallout 3 @ 1920 x 1080 with medium graphics quality. FO3 was playable, but not exactly always smooth.

Anywaste, had the HD 4650 or HD 4670 been available at the time the 9600GT, I would have bought one of those instead 'cause of lower power consumption.

this, there is NOTHING wrong with a 9600GT, its merely designed for a different market then the gaming cards. my only issue with it is that it cost too much compared to a 4670 that badly outclasses it,

Yes, i get 60fps with highest detail and everything on the highest settings with 1900x1200, and the fps changed the same, but like you all said, i might just sell both, im guessing since I bought the 9600 from micro center for 85, i can return it, and hopefully ill get baack my 8800gt rma'ed and i can sell it on craigslist for waht 100 dollars right?

fleabay might be a better bet, and you can usually get a new one under 100 dollars AR, a XFX in fact, gigabyte for 85AR. you can get a new 4850 for 105AR. I would try for less then the new cards

Umm, I doubt you'll get as much as $100 for it when a 4850 goes for like $115 or something brand new. Maybe $75? Still just about enough to get you a GTX 260 when you add the $85 from the 9600 though.

GTX 260 is on sale at ewiz for 150+shipping.
see hotdeals.
