939 is extended??

makes sense actually. AM2 isn't really needed yet. amd is just putting it out there so it's an alternative path :D

I think its a smart move. They've got a big s939 base and rather than have these folks migrate over to Intel when Conroe hits it will give them an alternative to stick with AMD until K8L comes out; albeit a rather expensive alternative.

I suspect DDR S939 is going to become the "budget" platform....fast procs but "slow" ram.

I certainly hope so. Now only if the fecken video card makers would bring me some X1900XTX in AGP goodness :(

I realize I responded to another thread you posted in about this, but here goes:

Unless motherboard manufacturers start making AGP boards again, AGP will be dead before long. Any upgrade you make in the near future involving CPU and motherboard will REQUIRE you to have/get a PCI-Express video card. Just live with it, it's the way to go. DDR2 will eventually become the norm as well, I presume.

Sure, you can stick with s478 and 939 which still have AGP boards, but once they become old technology, you will have to have a PCI-Express card. If you are sticking to your processor and motherboard that you have now, that's fine, I can understand why you want an AGP video card, but it's not going to happen. ATi and nVidia obviously don't see value left in the AGP market for newer cards.

what's to stop someone from putting the nf3 with socket AM2? it's not like the ht link has changed any :D

I made a post on this in a different thread last week.. On Wednesday night, I emailed AMD's Vice President of Sales for North America.

Here is what he said - Further to your enclosed email, I don’t expect to see 939 pin versions of the A64 5000+ or A64 FX-62. I don't think he was lying, infact, I am pretty sure he is serious. Maybe he is out of the loop, idk.. I guess we could always try to get a hold of Damon Muzny, he might know more..

Now...about the price..
I kinda get the feeling that if Intel lives up to all the hype, price may be the only weapon AMD has left. I'm almost hoping Intel does well, as this can only mean more competitive pricing and a re-doubling of efforts on AMD's part. PEACE!

im sure there is some life left in 939, amd has to become very competitive as intels announced july prices are going to kill amd. conroe is looking to be somthing special and there are a few sweet $$ chips. intel is doing sub $100 duel cores, taking a $400 6xx and droping it to $117, and a $300 dollar conroe that can take out a $1200 fx 62. it will be interesting to see how amd reacts or if they just rely on there fan base to keep sales up.

I hardly believe that DDR is slow. SD is slow. DDR is still able to keep up with whatever you throw at it. Until you find that DDR can no longer keep up, you cannot call it slow.

Poor move, the wise choice would have simply been to cut prices more on current processors rather than cater to the .01% of people who would actually spend $1200 on a processor with new technology out in a month.

What is the incentive now to move to AM2 ?

Same question I asked when they went on sale. That's why I said AMD should have waited for 65nm to ship AM2.

IMO incentive is a little future proof for new builders. I saw some rumor around that AMD has something up their sleeve for AM2. Sounds like something thats coming with 65nm. My take is that you can buy a low end cpu like the $110 3000+, and have the rest of your platform ready for possible pocket aces. I really thinking about selling off my 144 and rest of my 939 components to go that route. I stand to spend about $60 after selling off my stuff, which is not bad at all, and still have a 1.8ghz stock and 2gb of ram, but ready for 65nm. And not get slammed at once with insane 939 price drops causing me to lose more money trying to upgrade.

Then whatever it has up its sleeve should have launched with AM2.

Well, but they dont NEED to release it until there is a real, mainstream, AVAILABLE threat. Conroe's not out and available, i mean hell, theres only 1 board you can get here in the states. I thik this is a very smart move of AMD to get the boards out and let the consumer ready them selves.

BUT, at the moment, A64's still dominate. Conroe release is something like mid-late june right? Thats when i would expect AMD to release it.

And once again, this is all just speculation and rumor. I dont KNOW anything, i've just heard about it.

Hope ECS makes a motherboard that can use ddr and ddr2 with am2 :)

not going to happen since the memory controller is built into the cpu

Yes, I agree 100%, that's why I "quoted" it.

My guess is that there are plenty of things AMD can do for budget processors on S939, like cripple the onboard memory controller, or watever.

Not from the croud that kills Intel when they try the same thing. Please note I trashed the hell out of Intel for 3 925s and the 955 right on top of that, that's BS on Intel's part. I was shocked the first PresHotts weren't recalled LOL!

I say again, Keeping 939 going while K8F isn't really an upgrade is a good move IMHO. Now if K8G was the one they shipped with AM2, then I'd say their still sticking with Sc-939 as not so good but still NOT bad, suck, stupid or anything else in a negative tone.

Sorry I have to disagree with you since Yonah launched. Their performance edge on the Preslers also is slimmer than it was over Prescott. In many cases, too many for my likes, they loose their Bang for the Buck and that's rare for AMD.

All most of us do is Speculation, that's what use to be a lot of fun about messageboards.

cheaper RAM, possibly better upgrade path, nForce 5 chipset with: 6 onboard SATA controllers, dual-TCP offloaded GbE connections...

If you can afford an X1900XTX, you can afford a new motherboard. Have you got some custom (read: proprietary) case/motherboard combination such that the motherboard is not upgradeable?

.

Well, ok i forgot about Yonah, but thats not a mainstream desktop cpu its a mobile targeted against the Turion. And again there are not alot of boards out for these cpu's, so its still not a big threat to their main desktop market.

Yes the preslers were better than the previous, but i still dont see them doing great things. Maybe my view is a little skewed, being more of an XS kinda guy, but the none of the pentium D's have impressed me. Now the Conroe, yes that has impressed the s*** out of me, and thats why i think that AMD is saving an answer to that, when its launched.

Bang for buck; im sorry but no one can hold a solid lead for ever, so yes thats going to happen. I didn't expect intel to just let AMD keeping having the lead, of course they're going to do something to cut back into AMD's profits. Thats how business works. The other takes your customers, and then you have to work to get em back, and thats what Intel did, and hot damn did/will they do that with Conroe!

...and back to disappointment with the annoucement they never existed.

actually, you can bypass the memory controller and use your own, but negates any benefits of having the IMC... ;)

It was pretty obvious it was a mistake from the start. Not only does it exceed 80A, but why would AMD modify Rev.F just so they could release a single new S939 part? The people who genuinely belived this probably also have hope in an X2 on S754.

well.. two things

1. whoever said you'd need to modify revF? just release a revE chip at 2.8ghz and you're set
2. amd has proven that they're capable of releasing chips with lower power draw than the current ones on the market.

I agree!

The only thing I disagree with is that the answer is K8G and its a ways off. I don't think it will beat Conroe anyway. The one after G is what I see AMD using to catch up and or pass Intel. Thats at least a year away. Sure AMD is quick on its feet, this time they'll have to be. No, I don't think Intel is just happy with Conroe either, they'll not just sit there and wait for AMD. Damn it is a great time to be a Geek baby.

Power consumption has already been lowered with Rev. F, yet FX-62's envelope was raised to 125W. So you're proposing Rev. E at 2.8 GHz? Such a chip would also lack AVT and Presidio.

the power consumption didn't really drop. amd's just lowering the specs a bit, giving themselves less headroom for error :p

Oh yea, well I emailed I.P. Freally, and he told me that J. Seckler heard from Damon Muzny's cat's groomer's dog's owner who is the VP of the janitor staff over at Intel, that he heard that J. Seckler had a Socket A X2 processor on the Tech Tour.

To say the least, when you all see a Socket A Athlon X2, I called that one.
