Is that normal?
when i run folding GPU it makes a little whining/whistling sound. doesnt do that when i play games.

my computer is very quiet, using 120 and 140mm slow fans thats probably the only reason i noticed it.

im leaving it going overnight. i hope i still have a video card in the morning :D
 
It's normal. Sometimes overclocking the card can change the pitch of it to where you can't hear it. Your card won't burn down.
 
My two 8800 GT and one GTS all whine, whistle, buzz, however you describe it. You kind of get used to it, but ya it defeats the purpose of me getting Scythe fans and quiet power supplies. Best to think of it as an extra monitoring program, if you don't hear the whine you know something is wrong.

 
Just for giggles, how many of you have a Creative sound card, or any PCI sound card?

King our master web master for stats found this one. He pulled the card, noise went away, tried many sound cards.

Finally switched to a PCIE card, no noise.

It's worth a shot;)

I don't have any PCI devices in, so there goes that idea :p

 
I was an Aureal 3D fan, when they went under I tried an SB Live card, it was junk, and since then I haven't touched a Creative card. All 3 of my systems use onboard sound, only one has speakers, yet they all buzz. Safe to say it's the cards, as I've swapped PSUs between them and the buzz from each system stays exactly the same.

Cool, time for plan “B”. Take a vinyl tube say 3/8ths ID and about 18 to 24” long. Carefully hold one end in your ear while with your free hand start probing around the PSU, MOBO and VID cards to isolate the location, if not the component itself.

There are a few things that can cause this, anything from an open choke coil to a bad CAP.

I’ll check back, haven’t not fixed one yet;)


 
I haven't noticed any noise coming from my 8800GT. If it was high pitched at all, I know I would have heard it right off as I'm extra sensitive to high frequency sounds even though I'm half deaf.

For a bit more info, I am using onboard sound on the mobo in my sig. I definitely have no noise through the speakers. I have the side panel off my case and don't hear any noise from the card that way either. If you are hearing anything and it's actually from the card, it's probably a bad component on the card which shouldn't have passed Q&A testing.

 
It's not hard to believe QA missed it, as it only whines when folding, and only gets really loud when the shaders are bumped up. Games are fine oddly enough.

BillR I'll dig around like you mentioned one day and post what I find, kinda late right now though and my cards are sitting idle thanks to the empty queues.

 
Its an EMU 0404 which is a PCI card made by creative.

I'm going to check and see if my 8800GS cards have glue on their coils. They don't make the folding whine but every other cad does.

This would void the life time war with EVGA would it not.
 
I think it's BS when they void warranties for such reasons. I had a floppy drive that was bad from the factory. My dad wrote the invoice number and such on it so it would be easier to RMA. They REFUSED the RMA over the marker writing on the drive. My dad told them he would never order another part from them if they didn't take it back and they then took it back (we ordered like $20,000 a month in parts for our computer shop at the time). It was a 7 dollar part at that, I couldn't believe they even tried to not take it back over such a reason. But it is quite possible putting hot glue in the coils could cause them to not be happy about it. But honestly, you would think they would have to prove that it caused the failure like they do with modified cars.

These would be the “Choke” coils I mentioned in my above thread. Hot glue is a bad fix, it has way too low of a melting temp. Epoxy, carefully dripped over the coil works fine. The proper term is called “Potting” (no, you can’t smoke the coil) and all it does is keep the coils from resonating at a given frequency there for keeping them quiet.

There are also the same “Chokes” on virtually all motherboards that are capable of the same noise thus I suggested my crude but effective stethoscope to locate the actually offending part or parts.

Having sent a number of parts back to EVGA, unless you replace parts etc I have never had one rejected for this small but effective mod, much the same way people replace thermal transfer goo under the heat sinks.

The nice thing about EVGA is, call, the phones are staffed 24/7 and in the USA it is toll free. Don’t forget you have no real warrantee anyway unless you register your product on EVGA’s site. While you are there double check their forum for tech issues.;)




 
Just fired up the new GPU client on my new 8800GT and it whistles like a bitch. Sure is fast though.
