EDIT: this is moot now, as I bought a 9600gso from Vaulter98c, so...

Hello,
Long time, rather stupid folder here.

So, I swapped a 4350 for a 8500gt, solely for folding (since I don't do multimedia, at all).

I realised, a little late, that all my WU are missing their deadlines because I only have used the CPU client...

Anyways, once I download the GPU2 client, it tells me my 8500gt is not supported!

Any help, even bashing would be appreciated.

Thank you!
-Jeremy

Nevermind... I was trying to configure it via Remote Desktop...dummy.

The Remote desktop changes the display client to something wierd.

Now it works (yeah... not the best network F@H admin... yet!).

is it your primary card? I know its dumb, but youd be amazed how much people dont remember to put a dummy in their secondary card

If so, I dont know what to say... Its not a shader count thing, Ive folded on my 8 shader netbook (SLOOOWWWWW)

EDIT - DAMN, missed it by that much
OK, well, let me know what kind of PPD figures your are getting with those
I remember when I had my first SLI set up... dual 8500 gt 's lol

yeah... try folding on a pII. (it was a sony superslim pro, or something like that. For year 2000, it was slim!)

The reason I am even doing the remote desktop thing, is my computer has a dvi output (due to the 'new' 8500gt), and my monitor has a VGA...

I am waiting for this:
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=1589770&highlight=dvi+vga+adapter

before I can see the status again.

For the time being, FaHmon is doing fine, though I cannot diagnose a yellow status box, as it is, well, unviewable (RDC issue again).

Thank you for your prompt responses! (and help!).

You know, if it was for folding, someone would have just thrown one in the mail for you.

I didn't think of it.:)

Don't worry, when I upgrade (1-2 months?) there will be an 8500gt + VGA adaptor up for grabs!

You can use logmein to remotely admin your boxes. It will not mess up the GPU clients.

Thanks! I will need that to diagnose that yellow status icon in FaHmon.
Remote reboot, RDC login, install logmein, reboot?, diagnose (the process will have to be somewhat like that)?

EDIT:
based on the 9400gt here (similar specs to 8500gt), I can probably expect 900ppd.

I had a dually PII 266 system folding until the timeless tinkers ran out. Both processors combined put out around 30PPD I think.

I don't feel so bad now about how long I kept the dual PIII 550MHz going. I'll just say it was LONG after the timeless tinkers ran out. :D

When I first started I baked my first Socket A chip.

/sniff

Memories.

I just discovered EVERYbody is more [H] then I am...

LOL.....

No, not the case. It just when you take folding to the lvl we do at times.... the magic white smoke is released, or better (worse yet) Sparks! :D

Give it time.... the folding bug will bite you, then you will be sitting in a very warm room, power meter spinning, and no money in your back pocket.

Oooooo dear... is what I was afraid of:D

Spaceheaters, eh? I got a while to go before that!;) I think 160W isn't going to heat much more then my temper at the moment.

My best showing was 700 watts from the wall from a single rig.

I know there are others here that can and have beat that.

A good guess, based off of what I got so far is 700ppd for the 8500gt. The problem is, I cannot diagnose anything (I know how to do this with a monitor) with remote tools (RDC, LogMeIn, haven't tried RealVNC, but likey the same...).

The GPU client gives an error everytime I try to connect, and won't start!?
I wish I could use my KVM (got a few rackmounts in a mobile cabinet... at home), but that has no DVI connections, too.

Is there anyway to wire the DVI connector to a VGA male head, just for the time being? (because it looks like the pins aren't compatible, analoug ones).

Using Remote Desktop will crash the GPU client as it transitions to a different display driver. You can get around that by using a different protocol. LogMeIn and VNC will both work.

Okay, I guess my system has more error then I thought. I'll just reimage and post back later. (working off of hackingtosh right now)

I had to drop the use of the PIIs due to the lack of SSE. Without SSE they couldn't do anything with the Gromacs work units.

Up until about 2007 I had a few PIII machines going.

I had a PIII machine running until April when I moved. I don't have room for it anywhere at the moment and it's sitting in storage. If I wanted, I could fire it up again. I think I have another PIII or two in storage along with that one.

I stopped running the PIIIs because it would take about a week per workunit and the overall points output was negligible. It was also consuming too much power. I was running a P4 as my main rig at the time and it put out significantly more points than all of the PIIIs combined. Then I bought my laptop, and then I put together my current main rig which significantly outproduced everything else I had at the time. Right now I'm just folding on my main rig and my secondary rig, but combined they put out about 17k PPD which is more than I used to do in a month.

Okay, I got the DVI-VGA today. I'll see if I can actually finish a WU without hitting the deadline now.

Not sure how different the 8500 GT is from a 8800 GT, but my 8800 just started folding yesterday evening, and has already turned in over 5,700 points. I've got it set to only about 60% load and Rivatuner used to bump the fan speed up because it can really heat up the GPU, but the 353 point units get knocked out in just over an hour, and right now it's working on a 787 point WU that looks like it will take about 4 hours. Apparently GPU folding is where its at, at least for PPD.

16 SPs at 900MHz compared to 112 SPs at 1500MHz. Very different.

Even when comparing the 8500GT to a 9500GT, they are very different.

Dang, I just realized that a PS3 can only get out about 900PPD. Even the 8500GT can do that! Even a 9500GT can pump out 1600PPD!

Wow, makes the PS3 look really lame for this kind of thing, but every bit helps! ;)

Ah... I got about 660PPD from my 8500gt.

The PS3 client should be able to use the 6 available cores, and the 24 SP GPU, so it should far outdo the 8500gt, but I'm not sure what's up, yet.

That's because the 9500GT is actually an 8600GT.

quite true :)

The PS3 has a G70 GPU and does not have SPs. It cannot be used for folding.

Plus, If I remember correct, the PS3 only uses 2 of the "cores" (SPU's or whatever they are on a cell) from the available 5, and my PS3 is doing a solid 1000 PPD, have you reset it in the last half year? I know thats long, but Ive had mine run for about 14 months straight before

I'm thinking of picking up another PS3 actually, one to use as a media only device that just happens to fold

oops...
I'll remember that,
and stop spewing crap,
thanks!

The new client allows you to 'multitask,' IIRC. A friend of mine has a PS3, I don't.

Would it even be worth it? (power consumption / ppd)

No, not really.

I stopped running the PIIIs because it would take about a week per workunit and the overall points output was negligible. It was also consuming too much power. I know exactly how long it took for the PIIIs to do much of anything. Power wasn't exactly a concern and it was definitely nice in the winter. Before I moved I was paying probably the cheapest rate for electricity of anyone on this forum and a couple PIIIs were barely a blip on the radar. Let me put it this way: without any computers or even a TV the electric bill for my apartment was about $38 with no a/c or heat, with 5-7 computers my electric bill without heat or a/c was around $70-75. During the winter, the computers heated the apartment at least as well as the furnace did. This past winter I only turned the heat on in my apartment a couple of times. It was actually some time in December before I found out the furnace was broken because the machines did a good enough job. If the apartment wasn't old and had good insulation as well as something other than the horrible single pane windows, I probably wouldn't have needed to turn on the furnace at all.

Is there any special configuration I could use? Or are all nVidia GPU clients the same?

all the same. best bet is to OC like its going out of style and cross your fingers.
