805 D @ 3.466 < Intel ?

I'm possibly looking into upgrading my current rig to something new. I have the 805 D o/c to 3.466 right now and was wondering what would be a significant jump from my current processor to one of the new ones? Basically I would like to know if I should just stand with the old tried and true, or upgrade to something new? Would there be a noticeable difference? Chips that I have in mind are the Q9450 or E8400 or ?

Clock for clock, any Core 2 Duo derived CPU would be faster than that Pentium D.

Now the big question is what makes you think that you need a CPU upgrade?

What are you using it for?

Any fo the Core 2 architectures would be faster clock for clock due to more advanced chips and faster bus speeds...but unless you feel like dropping a good chunk, I'm not sure you'll see your money's worth compared to a 3.4GHz Pentium 800 [or, you could OC a Core 2 and that'd do the trick also I'd imagine]...but what is it you need to run that you currently can't?

I upgraded from that precise processor and overclock with a 7950 GT SC, which is about the same as your videocard.

I ended up with a Core2 Allendale 1.8 stock OC'd to 2.8. With the 7950 GT SC originally, and I saw a big boost(25%+) on CPU dependant games such as CS:S and saw a moderate gain (maybe like 10-15%) in Oblivion, Crysis, and the like.

I'd upgrade if you were planning on getting a new videocard soon, otherwise I'd hold off unless you have a mobo that can handle a Core2 processor already. I think allendales and cheap conroes can be had for 80-100 bucks.

I bought this CPU almost 3 years ago and was wondering what the new CPUs were like compared to mine. I was wondering what kind of performance upgrade I would see. As it stands right now, I'm going to upgrade the video card and then see from there. I play COD4 and Crysis and find that the games tend to slow down and was wondering if it were the CPU or vid card.

E8400 clocked will suit you best for gaming.
Mine is at 4GHz at 1.35V, it can do 4.35GHz without a sweat at 1.5V, havent tried for higher until I know how much voltage is really safe + I dont need the extra power yet anyway
4GHz is enough to max any 8800 Series card that is also clocked.

Core 2 Duo processors are around 40% faster per clock than their Pentium D predecessors according to Intel. You would do well to upgrade to any Core 2 Duo processor.

I would definitely suggest getting rid of the old processor and mobo and moving to a Core2 based Intel solution. I would be you would notice a difference in just about everything.

Part of that opinion is my pure and utter hatred for the Netburst architecture and another part is because the Core2 processors are a hell of a lot more efficient and will generally run a good bit cooler than just about any "modern" Netburst based CPU.

More to the point I have a Pentium D965 Extreme Edition (3.73GHz) and it can't hardly keep up with a Core 2 Duo E6300.

I Have an 805D as well, mine runs at 3.5Ghz along with a 7900GT. Currently I'm playing Bioshock, UT3 and a couple driving sims, this combo is more than enough. I am planning on grabbing an e2180 soon along with an 8xxx series GPU for when I move on to Crysis and othe nex gen games. Toms hardware has a great writeup on that chip and its dollar/performance potential...
