7970 Purchasing Thread

I know this is an AMD thread, but shouldn't the Geforce 780 blow this out for water? Though I know it's not out yet nor is a price available.

Nobody even knows if 780 is going to be the next GPU from NVIDIA, much less what the price will be, availability, or any specifications. You're straight trippin' if you're trying to compare something that I literally have sitting on my desk right now to something that doesn't even have leaked benchmarks, much less actual manufacturer published data.

I'm just trying to figure out if I should pull the plug or wait.

I believe the trigger is what you're considering pulling here. ;)

I believe that AMD has screwed the pooch on this card. They are definitely behind on getting inventory out to consumers.

You must not have followed many video card launches. This has actually been pretty good. There has been quite a few of at least one model available for a large majority of the time since Sunday night at Newegg...and at MSRP, even (10+ PowerColors available as I type this)!

I don't think there's any shortage of cards out there. I believe the primary failing of most resellers is their inability to keep their stock updated.

2 year warrenty sucks compared to 5 year with the Diamond branded one.

Based on their history, I trust Diamond just slightly more than I trust the government.

Which brand would you go with then?

I got 2 Sapphire 7970s for crossfire but for some reason they wont overclock at all. I tried them separately and they're still unstable when i try to overclock them just a little. I'm thinking its my psu but im not sure, I got a CORSAIR Professional Series Gold AX1200. My psu buzzes constantly and buzzes even louder under load.

Hey guys!

I registered just for this thread. Been lurking ever since the card was announced.

It's my first card launch too and I wanted to say hi!

And also ask a question:

I got an XFX Black from Buy.com, but I didn't notice until later that it was actually sold through them by BeachAudio.

Anyone have any experience with BeachAudio? Anyone bought one of these bad boys through them?

I ask because my order on buy.com has been listed as "processing" for 2 days now.... :(

i've never personally shopped at Beach Audio, but they are a large reputable company. they have a 9.2/10 on reseller ratings if that makes you feel any better. that being said, if newegg and amazon are having trouble keeping stock i would guess a company like beach audio is too. chances are they don't ctually have the cards yet (purely guessing here).

welcome to the forums! :)

interesting. they work fine at stock speeds though?

ASUS is probably the top choice due to their 3 year warranty that's based only on the serial number. They don't care where you bought it or if you're the 23rd owner. I don't really dig the premium that they charge for a reference design card, though.

I believe Gigabyte has pretty much the same warranty coverage as ASUS, so they would be another good option.

Sapphire only has a 2 year warranty, but their warranty service is pretty good.

XFX used to be top notch for warranty, but now that they only offer lifetime warranty on certain models and don't allow you to transfer it, that kind of blows.

Visiontek is lifetime as well, but again, no transfer.

Just got mine running. At first I was kind of underwhelmed going from 4870 crossfire to 7970. I swapped from the 4 pin molex to 8 pin adapter to the 8 pin on my PSU (I was scared, it didn't fit right), and now it's hauling ass. Don't use the 4 + 4 molex adapter, it sucks!

Sapphire is awesome though, they gave me all the adapters and even a 6 foot HDMI cable. Haven't started overclocking yet, I was getting some major graphical issues with the 4 + 4 adapter, but now everything is working perfectly. Go AMD!

wow- seeing Powercolor, Diamond, Gigabyte and XFX reference cards all in stock on Newegg right now.

Yup, it's crazy. Looks like AMD has had no issues with 28nm and supply at this point. Yields appear to be plentiful, it would seem.

Yeah... which makes you wonder what the deal is with Nvidia... I understand its a slightly different process, but if AMD can pull this kind of supply and yields at launch, whats holding Nvidia back from getting their new cards out the door?

Woohoo! Just pulled the trigger on an XFX Black Edition DD from newegg. Suppose I should add my 5970 to the FS/FT...

Yup, really makes you wonder what the hell is going on with Nvidia at this point.

How much are 5970's going for these days? I was lucky enough to sell mine for $800 on ebay. :)

I picked up the basic XFX card for $559, with free shipping and 4% cash back from FW. Was delivered to my door the next day. From Compusa, arrived today.

Design and production are different things. Nvidia may be having problems on the design side, as opposed to production delays.

Right- exactly my point because as far as I can remember they were blaming production process issues with TSMC's 28nm process (a different one than AMD is using?) not design issues. AMD putting on this kind of launch makes me wonder if Nvidia has design issues that they are trying to hide by pointing at the process. If that is the case, then then Kepler may not end up being as good as the rumors and speculations.

I guess it could also be that their design is inherently harder to produce than AMD's for some reason - and so it would technically be a production issue, but based of a design choice. I'm not a chip engineer though, so I'm not sure how likely that is.

Anyway, to bring this back on topic, I'm not really in the market for a new card, but man, I really want one of these. Must. stop. looking. at. Newegg.

I can't remember where I saw it, but I could swear that I saw a blurb about it was definitely a design issue...something about them having to re-tape, which would add at least 3-4months to the process...

Cool- if you can find a link- I'd love to see it ;-)

When is the 7990 coming out ? Has anyone heard any rumors ? I'm trying hard to hold out for a 7990 instead of 2 7970s (PLEASE HELP ME) I can't stop adding them to my cart !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Add 999 to your cart, if they don't have a limit restriction it will show all that they have. There are now 24 Gigabyte ones left.

P.S: I was not using the newegg business site either, but it should work there as well if you have an account.

Finally got mine, installed it. Been playing about 30 minutes of Crysis 2 and started to notice the very loud sound of the fan. Then I started to notice my room becoming hot. Now I can feel a crazy amount of heat being generated from my computer. Checked the gpu temps and they were around 85C. Probably would have kept rising too. Is this normal? I went from a 6950 that was quiet as a mouse and created almost no heat at all.

Sounds normal to me. My GTX-580s would heat my room up so much, I'd have to open the window and wear a hoodie in the dead of winter. :p

Welcome to the high end.

Ya, you are right. After testing for about an hour, the average was about 80C which is almost exactly what the [H] review stated as well. Its just shocking that this amount of heat is coming from my pc now lol :D. Glad I waited to get a flagship GPU before playing Crysis. Its amazingly beautiful and so fast.

The only problem I am having with any game is Skyrim. For some reason the image quality has degraded and my FPS is actually worse than on my 6950. :( Everything else (Rage, TOR, etc) is an incredible increase in performance. Worth every penny.

Just receive PowerColor 7970 card today. Waiting on the XFX 7970 to arrive on Friday. :D

Mine will be here tomorrow. I'm guessing I'm one of very few going from a 580 to this, lol. Faster is faster. Hopefully once drivers mature a bit, the margins will increase.
