With the screen tear gone and this card maxing all games out in eyefinity and no more demanding games coming out for along time does that make this the end game card for years? This maxes all on single and eyefinity which makes Nvidia 3 screen (surround) obsolete now for no one has to suffer using 2 gpus on 3 screens (it reduces smooth performance rather than increase it, just compare nvidia surround to a single card in eyefinity). There is no point in upgrading with anything that nvidia has to offer if it cost more than the 7970

It maxes all games out. Unless they make another ultra demanding game in the near future what is the point of making another card? We have to wait 2 years for the new consoles to come out to push the graphics in games (which is probably why there are no new demanding games on the horizon)

Once again AMD beat Nvidia on launch of new architecture

I used to upgrade to the best gpu available regardless if its green or red but unless they make another BF4 or Crysis 3 there is no point in getting anything better than a 7970 and now that I use 3 screens Nvidia is no longer an option. I just cannot understand why Nvidia cannot invent a gpu that can run high resolutions ie 3 screens. Most gamers are switching to 3 screens due to the cheap price of monitors and eyefinity is superior to single screen.

Nvidia is going to lose all their 3 screen support AMD just killed them with the 7970 it is ludicrous to buy anything else when a oced 7970 obliterates every game now and foreseeable future on single and 3 screens.

Nvidia and AMD have problems with drivers (most notably with SLI and crossfire) but everyone knows now that AMD is pulling ahed with better driver support. When it comes to 3 screens if a new game comes out and does not fully support 2 gpus Nvidia users are screwed for 3 screens, once again due to Nvidia not creating a gpu that can handle 3 screens. BF3 was broken for Nvidia users but a simple fix for eyefinity was available to AMD users. I like Nvidia but why are they always to far behind AMD? They release the 4xx series to try and save face from the 5xxx series but they were horrible furnaces. By the time the 580 came out (which was not much better than the 6970) it is now being forgoten about or at least being used to compare to the 7970. Is the 6xx going to take forever and suck just like the 4xx series?

I suspect that this thread is going to generate some "lively" discussion.

Seriously? That made me chuckle and I own a 7970.

#1 screen tear is not gone,
#2 it can't max all games in Eyefinity

this card maxing all games out in eyefinity

Battlefield 3.

If this card seriously maxed BF3 (>60FPS, 64-player MP game) out in eyefinity (>5760x1080) I would be all over it. It can't. Neither can my 2x 69502GB CF setup. It looks like a great card, but there is definitely still a need for crossfire at eyefinity resolutions.

Yo don't even have a 7970 and you telling me it dosen't?!

I own a 6970, 2x580 and a 7970

So you're telling me that it does? Please enlighten us. I would like to see Ultra settings (hell, I'll even say no MSAA) at 5760x1080 in a 64-player conquest server stay above 60fps. ;)

So what kind of FPS are you getting in BF3 in eyefinity? And what res is that and settings? If it can maintain 60 or higher all the time that would be great.

I own 2 in crossfire and it doesn't max out @ 3600x1920, I have everything on ultra except shadows and no MSAA, and it still lags a bit in outdoor maps with 64 players. Even 3 6970s did.

So no, a single 7970 will NOT max out bf3, maybe in single player. and I'm getting screen tear on the off screen.

Something is very wrong. You are crossfiring take out 1 card and try again. Crossfinity is terrible I had 2x6970s at one point and the performance sucked

I get Ultra hbao 16af butter smooth no tears anything 5760*1080

My point is for $630 asus I am getting the performance I have always wanted I would not spend any more $ just to get even a lot more performance. This card is flying off the shelves and all extremists are demanding it.

The hardware has caught up to the gaming expectations I guess I am angry that consoles are holding us back and will continue to hold us back for at least 2 more years that and stupid Nvidia for not making a single gpu for 3 screens

Can it even play BF3 at minimum 120 FPS on 120hz display at 1920x1080?

The support for that card would suck.

I don't own one so I couldn't say, I was merely pointing out the fact that that the card does exist, which is contrary to what you stated in your original post.

I know my Quad GTX580 SLI 1.5GHz cards will play liquidly fast at 1920x1080 120Hz no issues with everything maxed out.. as thats how i was playing it untill i started poking around getting my Surround Vision working good again a week ago. If i could play the same as smooth on the 3 screens as it did on a single i'd be in heaven.

Quick system specs:

Evga stock GTX580s in Quad SLI
Evga 4-Way SLI Classified 762
12GB ram at 1600Mhz 7,8,7,1T
3x Acer 23" 3D LCD monitors runing (6120x1080 @ 120Hz)

Just because Nvidia hasn't (yet) made a 3 screen card doesn't mean they can't. The number of people who actually use three screens is vanishingly small (far, far from "most" gamers) so it probably hasn't really been a priority for them yet. I'd imagine Kepler will support it out of the box. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that posters here are in any way indicative of the actual state of gamer hardware.

Alright, I'll bite. Leaving aside the "OMG BF3 @7897409847x984984 resolution" bickering, we've been in a state of diminishing returns for a while now, and it's going to continue for quite some time. Games aren't getting more demanding, and hardware is still getting faster. Long gone are the days when you couldn't wait for the next gen card so you could MAYBE turn on AA or AF @ 1280x960 in Far Cry. We all know this, and aside from the guys running multi-monitor setups, there is really no need even for a 7970. I sooo want to go buy one, but it would be a waste of money, as I game at 1920x1080 and I would have to buy 2 in order to beat my 6970CF setup. Yeah, yeah, I know "go turn on 16x SSAA in BF3". Seriously, it's not worth $1100 (price of 2 7970's), to be able to turn up my AA. That said, people will still keep snatching up the latest and greatest, well at least the enthusiasts will, whether they need it or not. So no, this isn't an "endgame" card. When kepler hits, people will snatch those up, and when the 7990 hits, they won't be able to keep them on the shelves. There are a lot of us with more money than sense, and I include myself in that statement ;)

Just wow man. I have one 7970 in the rig right now and the second one arrives tomorrow. Where do you get the idea that this card maxes out all games in eyefinity? For example I just finished up MW3 using the single 7970.

Frames:16147
Min FPS: 34
Max FPS: 96
Average FPS: 67

This is a very non-demanding game as far as graphics go. This is from the Prologue map beginning with where you start to defend against the fast roping Russians. The length of the benchmark was 4 min. The part where it dips down almost to 40 is where I died. The benchmark numbers are recorded every 1 second while the min/max/avg numbers are captured for every frame. Captured with FRAPS.

Here were my settings.
Resolution: 6048x1200
AA: 4x
V-Sync: off
Shadows: Yes
Specular Maps: Yes
Depth of Field: Yes
SSAO: High Quality
Soften Smoke Edges: Yes
Bullet Impacts: Yes
Image Quality:Native(don't use extra just gets more blurry)
Texture Quality: Manual
Texture Resolution: High(don't use extra just gets more blurry)
Normal Map Resolution: High(don't use extra just gets more blurry)
Specular Map Resolution: High(don't use extra just gets more blurry)

Widescreen Fixer 2.3.59
COD MW3 SP 1.4.368 plugin
3x16:10

As you can see even if you completely ignore where I died there are many points where I dip below 60 FPS. For multiplayer games your going to want to do everything in your power to stay ABOVE 60 FPS at ALL times. So your theory doesn't really hold water because it is based on false foundations.

First of all, AMD driver support over the past 6 months has been pathetic, period.

Secondly, while the new 7970 is a fine card, it is NOT the be all to end all, and a single card will NOT run every game available "maxed out" whatever that means.
In the HardOCP review the card is barely faster than a single 6990, recall in the conclusion that the reviewer said he was not convinced that a 7970 would be an upgrade versus a 6990 or a Crossfired 6970 deuce.

Last, Metro 2033: Last Light will bring your single 7970 card to it's knees at 6015 x 1200 resolution.

I would bet money, Metro 2033 in eyefinity will knock a couple of teeth out of your 7970 in EyeFinity.

Cool down, it's a good card, but it isn't the last card.

Expect to see a single Surround capable card from nvidia, look at the Galaxy card. It isn't very good, but as a proof of concept, it shows it can be done.
Why would nvidia do that anyway......you want Surround? You have to buy two cards.......dumb like a fox.

I all honesty, if you want to show some muscle in 3 monitor gaming, whether it be nvidia or AMD, realistically, you need two cards to push the pixels and enjoy the game at it's best.

Yup Nvidia used to be the best thing going around and then....

they took an arrow to the knee. ;)

get the facts straight, in no way shape or form should nvidia be credited for Galaxy fixing their fuck up when it came to nvsurround.

btw original poster, show some hard number facts, a bunch of talking about how something performs for you with out numbers means absolutely dick to the rest of us.

My facts are straight.
I responded to his post that there were no Nvidia cards capable of running 3 monitors... its a Nvidia based card, the AIB partner is irrelevant in the context in which it was posted.

Galaxy has delivered and given us multi-display gaming on a single GeForce GTX 580 GPU based video card!

What if you are a 1920x1080 gamer with two 6950 2Gb GPU's , unlocked shaders and plan on building a whole new rig when SB-E / IB comes out? I can get at least $400 for my cards, but quite possibly $500. Is the 7970 or any cards lined up to come out worth selling my cards and buying?

EDIT: I was just curious, lets say once they were back in stock i bought a 7970, and down the road i wanted another to crossfire. How much do you think the price would drop say a year from now? Once revised and out for quite a while and what not..what do you think the lowest price they might become? I just ask because people say "get one now, eat the 10% drop in performance, then get another down the road" and thats great, but if "another down the road" is ANOTHER $500+...then no i dont think i would do that. Already owning a $500 GPU is odd enough for me lol, owning $1000 in graphics cards is mind boggling (for me).

I dont think so. There is a thread in here with those same benchmarks.

The 7970 can't even run 24x FSAA (8x+edge detect+8xQ)+ Supersampling in *any* recent game, at 1024x768. How is it endgame? Even 8x AA+Supersampling is unplayable in most recent games.

While 24x FSAA+Supersampling is playable in CS Source, you'll change your mind quickly when you walk into smoke and your FPS drops into the 20's, leaving you switching to adapative AA and 100+FPS agian.

So shouldn't this card be the end all for gaming at 1920x1080 for at least 2 years?

No. You won't get playable framerate for competitive recent games (casual is fine, but competitive means 100+ solid on a CRT And 120+ solid on a 120hz lcd) with 8x AA and adapative AA at 1080p (1920x1080). And want to use supersampling AA? Enjoy rates in the 20's, lol....

This is a very non-demanding game as far as graphics go.

The is game isn't quite as non-demanding as that. With it cranked up in 3D Surround it will dip into the 30s in lots of out door areas. I know people love to trash this franchise but fuck it's just fun to play, the single player in this is MUCH better than BF3. And there are areas of the game that are very good looking.

A competitive player though isn't going to crank of this stuff up usually.

I know my Quad GTX580 SLI 1.5GHz cards will play liquidly fast at 1920x1080 120Hz no issues with everything maxed out..

i get a little chuckle out of this....i can play virtually anything maxed out and if not very very close to at 1920x1200 with....a single ati 5770. my cpu is an old core 2 e4500 running at 2.9Ghz.

only exception is tossing AA into the mix and honestly with that resolution on my 24" monitor its nice to use but no deal breaker for sure.

so yeah somehow i can't see you having any trouble with a monitor like that ;) overkill is fun.

i find that graphics didn't progress very far last 2 years - or at least not as fast as they did in the past. probably due to recession. people can't afford newer hardware, so hold the graphics back a bit so as to not hurt your sales.

i dont see the 7000 series as a new arc, i see it as the 6000 series with few tweaks on 28nm.

No way. My secondary gaming rig is an i7 920 at 3.4 GHz and a stock clocked GTX 480 and I think it's barely at the "max out" 1920x1200 threshold.

I guess we all have our own definition of playable and where you are happy playing at.
