6970 or 6990?

do we really need more threads about cards that we have no official prices or specs for?

probably staying with my overclocked 5850. I refuse to upgrade my card just because of 1-2 games.

My setup on the graphics end is becoming a bit outdated due to the 512mb limitation with my resolution. However, it's been running strong since Nov. 2008 and these upcoming cards hopefully can serve the exact same life cycle for newer titles.

Prefer to read the reviews and see the actual pricing first. I may not buy at all if the 6970 is not more than 25%-30% faster than my current card, or if the price is not acceptable. I would only be willing to pay $400 for 20% and maybe $450 for 30%. If they want $500 they need 40% or better, over the 5870.

Then again, I may end up just buying a 6870 for one PC and then using my the liberated 5870 for crossfire in the other PC.

Do we need more people asking if we need more threads of the thread they are posting in?
do we need more people asking if we need more people doing that? lol. really it can go on forever but this thread is about useless since we have no official info on the cards. how the hell can anyone make a decision until we know something?

yeah no kidding

lol yeah...

Next week we're gonna start getting threads like this :

"Hey Guyz should I get HD9870 or wait for quadruple HD10,999?! "

God damn it people, nobody knows the performance for sure. Wait few more days and you'll find out.

My 5870 is more than enough for the majority of the games I play (even at 4320x900 on high). I find no reason to shell out probably $500 for 2 or 3 games that I have to just slightly turn down the settings from high to achieve good frames per second.

However, I probably will purchase a 6970 later next year once the price comes down a bit (~$300-$350 hopefully) if the performance really is much better than my current 5870 (25-30% increase in performance).

I already have the 6999 on order. If you can't guess, it has 3 6970 GPUs instead of the 6990's two!

Talk about kicking a dead horse! Relax ya'll, it will be out when it is out. Or at least that is what my friend's uncle's sister's best friend of the wife of the best friend of the son of a.... told me in a UFO while drinking a couple of beers with me and Elvis yesterday anyways. :D

With both cards soon to be release, which card will you be purchasing?

Waiting for reviews on the 6970. I hope Kyle crossfires the 6970 on a good 30 inch monitor and does some apple to apple comparison against the GTX 580 SLI.

If the Crossfire 6970 has good benchmarks at 2560x1600; I am going to shoot for the 6990. I thought hell would freeze over if I buy my second AMD/ATI back to back. I was really hoping the GTX 580 was 512-bit with 2GB of RAM. But everybody was 100% you can't do that at 40nm :) But I can dream right? MY 5970 has been a dream from day one. No GSOD, lockups or anything game breaking. Was upset with battlefield bad company 2 taking forever to load, but they fixed it.

I have to admit something that I never noticed that much when I made the switch. There is something that ATI/AMD is doing that makes the games look "sharper" and I can't pin point it. I still notice something is "wrong" with my GTX 280 but I can't figure it out.

Hm, is the 6990 supposed to be two 6870's in CrossFire or two 6950/70's in CrossFire?

Judging by the "9" I'd say it's two 6970's.
Maybe with a slight nerf though.

If the 6970 beats the 580 significantly then I'll buy two of them. Otherwise I'll have to think it over. Can't wait to see some actual benchmarks. I've read some guy claim that the 6970 beats the 580 by 30% but I find that claim really hard to believe.

I've gone back and forth between green and red for the last 4 years.
Had a trunk load of GPUs.

I'm not going to use AMD anymore, unless nvidia goes broke.
(not a fanboy, just feel overall nvidia has given me a better, more consistant product):D

Didn't mean upset anyone for making this thread, but judging from the performance of the 6850 and 6870, one can speculate that the performance of both upcoming GPU's should be spectacular. After all, 2 6870's in crossfire beat 2 5870's in some benchmarks.

I'll keep my 5870 no matter how good the 6970 is...am waiting on the 28 nm cards from Nvidia/ATI...now that should be a worthwhile upgrade (at least until the DX12 cards come out :D )

I think I'm with you, polonyc2. I have a 5870 now and I'm thinking of skipping the 6xxx series. Although, I just upgaded to a 30" Dell U3011, so I might need something like a 6990 or GTX 595 to really play full res. at 2560x1600.

Just have to wait and see I suppose.

Xbox360 and PS3's are getting stale, technology-wise.
And with everything (most everything) being built around consoles, graphics cards have already advanced too far beyond consoles...

It's gotten to the point now where people are ghetto connecting 3+ monitors to make the resolution higher because it's the only choice we have anymore.
Until the next-gen consoles come out, I think you'll find your demand for new graphics cards going down and down... Unless you insist on adding more monitors, which really isn't the right answer.

Ideally games would be advancing fast enough such that top-end cards would be struggling even on one monitor.
The fact that this ISN'T happening just means the graphics cards are advancing too fast, or games advancing too slow. We all know the answer to that one.

Last I checked, Metro 2003 still doesn't run at 60fps on highest detail at 1920x1200 on any graphics card. Crysis 2 is at hand, and that will beast PCs as well.

Bad ports will never run well on any system.

That "ghetto" connection is called EyeFinity and/or Nvidia Surround technology.

Metro 2033 is not a port..

Anyway it's not a game where a full 60 FPS is needed at all times. I had no problems playing it @ 2560x1600 with everything maxed apart from DoF.

I'm sure you'll have a blast with it when the new consoles drop.

Metro 2033 is not a port..
I use it as a generic term meaning "poorly designed PC game".
In other words, it's performing sub-par given how the graphics look.

DoF not being maxed is not max settings. The simple fact is that the best graphics cards out TODAY cannot max out Metro 2033 at 1920 and above and maintain playability, thus proving UtopiA wrong.

Proving what wrong?
I said "most games" because I understand there will always exist poor quality games that run terribly regardless of setup. :)

Please post the source code to Metro 2033 and Crysis and point out how they are poorly coded and perform suboptimal relative to the graphics displayed on screen.

I call this the Rockstar Toronto Diversion.
"The game is doing things you can't see, which is why it runs so badly."

Why don't you justify why Metro 2033 runs so poorly? It was designed by some of the same folks who made STALKER which is not exactly known for being an optimum performer (the engine, I mean).
