Flash this and turn off hd audio and lose after burner and use smart dr...fixed my crashes Link Do not use afterburner ! I never needed tomake any 2d profiles..
Merry Xmas Dick Head Looks like your head went empty after Afterburner 1.3.0. Maybe Santa will help you out too so that Afterburner 1.6 actually works again! NeonGuy - Dude, thats just WRONG!!!
Strange 1.41 works for me.. only thing I seem to have to do is disable ATI HDMI Audio driver and im back running stable again twice now on two different systems. Personally I love afterburner. Not so much for the overclocking part but for the fan control. Anyone can OC in CCC just fine... but you cant build a fan profile like you can in Afterburner.
OMG>>>> I am BLIND>>> picture bad... AHHH lol.. merry christmas you crazy peeps... lovin my 5870 so far. 9.12hf drivers..
Well its not the over clocking part that isn't working, but the voltage control that seems to be the issue. You do still need to unlock overdrive in the CCC for the overclock to take effect from AB. I need 1.187mv for mine to be stable @ 1Ghz core, AB 1.4.0 and 1.4.1 were crashing with the core at 1Ghz but 1.3.0 its perfectly fine. Found it to be AB voltage control to not work properly.
I just installed my brand new XFX HD 5870 and loaded up L4D2. Within 2 minutes I got this famous gray screen crash with sound looping. I have nothing overclocked and am just running the ATI 9.12 drivers with hotfix. No Afterburner or any other special apps. I switched back to my previous XFX HD 5770 card. I'll be sending the HD 5870 card back to the retailer Monday unless ATI releases a fix before then... Here are my system specs: Seasonic X-650, Gigabyte EP45-UD3P, Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550S, A-DATA 8GB PC2-6400, XFX HD5870, Intel 160GB G2 SSD, Western Digital WD20EADS 2TB, LG GGW-H20L, Samsung SH-S223Q, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 EDIT: I just called Tiger Direct and my XFX HD 5870 is authorized for return. I'll stick with my 5770 for now. Maybe I'll look into the 5800 series again in the future if ATI gets this issue resolved.
I still get these issues with my Sapphire 5850 since install. Using the newest 9.12 hotfix drivers currently. I have tried pretty much everything listed, and currently have no third party apps installed, nothing is overclocked at all on the system and everything is stock. I have a GA-965p-s3 with a e6600. Ran a 8800 for 2 years with not a hiccup, when upgrading to the 5850 nothing but issues. Have a clean vista install, tried various catalysts etc... I get the grey screen in games and the occasional internet lockup/freeze when scrolling. At this point I can't even send it back to the egg, so I contacted Sapphire support and they have me trying various things before I assume I can get an RMA. Last time I'm going to ATI It seems.
Is this happening with all brands of 5870's? Any brand I should avoid? Sapphire? XFX? Or is it a problem with all the cards in general? Luck of the draw type of deal..?
Not true, legal owners of MSI cards purchasing it with Afterburner CD pay me 0.01 EURO Dean can get his 0.01 if he wish.
Thanks for the update. You also get some from EVGA for Precision also? Keep up the great work and enjoy your holidays, Alex.
Try using this: Make sure you use two separate power cables from the PSU. Maybe it's not enough power from a single power cable. I was having the same gray / black screen crashes with my 5770. I plugged a second PSU, with the adapter, dedicated to my VGA and the other PSU dedicated to the motherboard and stuff. No crashes running Resident Evil 5 benchmark on loop for 32 hours straight (and counting). I bought a corsair 550vx with 41 amps in 12v rails. I'll give a try again when i recieve it. If I get crashes, I'll use the adapter and see what happens. First PSU = Cheap, brandless, fake power. Used to power the VGA only, using two power cables. Second PSU = Thermaltake Purepower 430W. Used to power the rest of the stuff (motherboard, cpu, hard drive, thats it.) Another case of success: http://forums.guru3d.com/showpost.php?p=3397784&postcount=101
What do you mean unlock CCC for OC to take effect? My overdrive is still locked and grayed out but overclocking fine with AB.
The weird thing is, most people were saying that the card ran fine for playing 3D games but would crash in Windows during basic 2D stuff. If it was a case of the card not getting enough power, you would think that it would be stable doing 2D as the card wouldn't be taxed nearly as heavily and then crash when put under load during 3D apps.
But not everyone. Other people are having problems only while playing 3d games, getting gray / brown / black screen crashes. SInce it worked for me and for that guy from guru3d, it's worth a shot.
Wait, thats all you are getting for Afterburner is .01 per copy from MSI purchases? I hope MSI is paying you something for you time too.
I benchmarked stock clock...... then benchmarked with an AB overclock and it was WAY higher. Did not have to unlock CCC. If I remember correctly Unwinder had told me you dont have to unlock CCC for afterburner to OC. Your telling me when you OC with AB and you dont have CCC unlocked your score is the same? This is not true for me. EDIT: Here is my score with a single 5870 @ 1000/1300 OC using AB without CCC being unlocked (still grayed out) No way I could hit this stock clock.
Also not the problem in my case. I have a Corsair HX1000 PSU. That has a total of 6 dedicated 8-pin PCIe connections, of which I'm using two. It is perhaps 30% loaded at maximum load on my system. That and my problem happened in Windows, doing 2D stuff.
Same here, I'm using a Seasonic X-650 power supply with four dedicated 8-pin PCIe connections, using two of them. EDIT: I just called Tiger Direct and my XFX HD 5870 is authorized for return. I'll stick with my 5770 for now. Maybe I'll look into the 5800 series again in the future if ATI gets this issue resolved.
I bought and tried a new PSU and the same issues are still happening, I get random lockups in 2d web browsing, pretty much just from scrolling, with multiple browsers. I also get the grey screen from 3d games occasionally, have done a clean install of vista, clean driver installs. I disabled the hdmi audio, tried different memory..... Pretty much everything people have discussed here. I'm in contact with sapphire support now with an open ticket, but they are just saying the same things I've read here. I have no 3rd party software installed, and all my clocks are default. This is becoming very disheartening, I'm truly annoyed I bought an ATI card now.
Could anyone else with these crashes do me a favor and test this out?: Connect a second screen and add it in extended mode (not group it in Eyefinity). Use Catalyst 9.12 hotfix. You'll notice that the idle temps are now much higher and the clocks are fluctuating between higher clocks. Load temps should be around the same. Run games/benchmarks where it normally crashes on one of the screens .
well i moved my ddr2 1141mhz to the other slots last night and guess what i greyscreened with sound loop and vert stripes. Quickly i put ram back in other slots. Ive been rock stable since i flashed to asus bios and oc via smart dr. so what does this mean ? drivers ? 58xx sniffs out weak memory or hardware oc ? I know sometimes some hardware doesnt play well with other hardware. 5870's not very hardware friendly ? do you guys ever get some long pauses in l4d2 with sound loops but then game plays fine like it was a 3-8 sec pause ? looks and sounds like a crash but then plays fine.
No, but windows does. I noticed that after some crashes, I had a WHEA logger error: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/pnppwr/whea/default.mspx I belive that the problems with the 5870 grey crash has much to do with ATI powerplay triggering some ACPI error on some hardware configurations. That can explain the sporadic crashes, the fixes in this thread and so on. My system was 100% stable with ATI 4870X2 and crashes came after installing 5870. Various fixes has reduced the occuranse of this problem on my system. It seems that there is nothing wrong with the 5870, but that the 5870 doesn't play nice with the rest of the hardware in my system. They might have changed the way powerplay works on the 5000 series and therefore its more vulnerable to WHEA/ACPI. Using a second screen in extended mode changed the way powerplay acts and I have yet not managed to produce a single crash. I hope someone else can test this with a second screen as well like this: http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1035108698&postcount=389
The cards are set to clock up higher at idle when running dual monitors. This is normal. For those having crashes you should be knocking your video cards back to stock clock and not using any aftermarket overclocker. You should also set your system back to stock settings. If your crashes go away after this then you know there is a problem with either your system stabilty, your video OC, or the third party OC application you may be using. Also for me disable ATI HDMI fixed me up all over again. It also fixed a coworker having the same problem. The Gray screen is so generic.. its no one thing that causes it.
Higher idle clocks might help with this problem, which is why I would prefer if someone else with the crashes could test this too The grey screen issue isn't about a general instalbility in the system. If so, it wouldn't occur in my system which was 100% stable with a 4870x2 for a year and didn't have crashes before the 5870. However, I do belive that the problem is related to ACPI power management vs. Powerplay and that they changed something in the 5000 series power management that causes instability on some systems. I have logs from way back on my system and the first occurance of WHEA-logger error came after installing the 5870. It happens after some crashes (not all) and can be found in the event log upon restart after the crash: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/pnppwr/whea/default.mspx The generic nature of the grey screen error and the randomness of when it crashes might be explained, if its a powerplay/acpi issue. If you check the link of WHEA above, you can see that it relates to more then just the GFX card. So, other things might trigger this, but if the 5000 series are more sensitive to it, it might crash from this. Even though WHEA doesn't log an error in event manager after each crash, it still is active before each crash and might cause a crash in conjunction with the 5870. Again, could anyone please test their system with a second screen as shown in link above?
I agree with some of that but your like the 15th person to tell me ..."My system was 100% stable with my old card and now crashes with my new card" After eventually talking these ppl into going bakc to stock clocks and re-checking thier ram wtih memtest most of them found either ram issues or that going bakc to stock clock fixed thier crashes. This card is notorious for taking a completely stable OC in a system and makign it unstable. Not that this is your problem but its kinda getting old hearing someone say how stable thier system is and then finally they go back to stock clock and thier problems go away. Good luck with your issue though.
I can confirm that after about a week now. Running Afterburner 1.3.0 with voltage at 1.187v and a core speed of 1Ghz while using 9.12 hotfix that this is 100% stable again. Not a single crash or grey screen since I went back to Afterburner 1.3.0 to set my voltage.
Going to have to agree here, it doesn't make any sense as to why a system which has shown to be rock stable at whatever OC, becomes unstable with a 5870, provided that the system's power supply is adequate. However, certain motherboards in the past have shown incompatibility issues with video cards, and required bios updates. I remember a lot of people having to update their bios on the motherboard in some instances in the past, so that their system can boot with the card installed. Lots of possibilities here, but I think people should really list their motherboard model when reporting this infamous grey screen crash.
Yeah I get those playing TF2, usually within the first 5 minutes. It does the red vertical screen crash/looping sound, then recovers like 8 secs later. And i'm still in the server playing too. After it does this, then I can play for hours without a problem.
Chalk up another problem case. My XFX 5870 works perfectly in XP Pro 32-bit, but Win 7 64-bit sees all sorts of issues in 2D usage only. Gaming has so far been flawless, for probably 6-8 hours total; non-gaming usage sees driver failures and even occasional blue screens at least every hour or two. My rig sometimes crashes out to a gray screen, sometimes to a black screen, but the monitor never loses signal. Giga UD3R, i5 750, 4GB RAM. Nothing has been overclocked since I built the rig, and it's rock-solid with memtest and prime. When I uninstall display drivers, the system is 100% stable. All of this info together seems to point pretty conclusively to ATI's drivers...never mind that I'm seeing the same issues as so many others have reported. Interestingly, the drivers that shipped with my card in October are reasonably stable - they're the case I describe above. The December Cats, otoh, won't even let me get into Windows Explorer; I crash to a gray screen (or black screen, or w/e) right after logging in and sometimes even before. This is pretty frustrating, because it really limits the amount of troubleshooting I can do with the most recent drivers. I can't set up a profile to regulate voltage and clocks, e.g., when I'm unable to even reach the desktop. I have a list of things to try starting tonight, based on all the discussion in this thread, but at least here's another data point.
has anybody found what causes it for sure ?? Some fix's work on some systems and dont on others. any real fix yet?
For me it was a driver issue that was cleared up in 9.12 hotfix, i have had no grey screens at all since then. Looks like its a hard 1 to pin down cos for some ppl it looks like its faulty cards as well, so with shakey drivers and bad cards, jeez wat a fekin mess. Or it could be a powerplay issue as well to add more confusion into the mix, i have the LCD tv in the livin room attached to my card as well for watchin films, i read on here that having another dvi plugged in stops my card lowering its power as low as it would if i only had 1 display attached. It could be a combination of all those things, new driver syndrome, some faulty cards with duff parts on out there & over aggressive powerplay issues. Time will tell.
