Well, the upgrade bug bit me again, I swore I would stay with my 4080, but I just had to cure the disease for awhile. It is a nice performance bump, and MFG 3X, 4X are cool, but I just was blown away over just how big my 4080 was. This particular PNY 5080 is around the size of my EVGA 3080 I use to have, which is fine, I hated installing and removing the 4080 because it was such a monster.

Grats, I'm super happy with my PNY 5080 (same model). I jumped on the same card when it was on sale for $930 back in early Oct and came from a 12GB 3080 that was honestly still serving me well, but with how volatile GPUs have been since COVID, I figured getting one under MSRP was a sign to buy.

Crazy how cool it stays too; I would think its liquid cooled just looking at the temps and it's super quite as well. The clock usually stays around 2865MHz in game on my card. I usually see it around 60-65C in games after a while and it idles around 10C above ambient.. It's pretty cold in my office right now (mayber 15C) since I've had the heat off and just got home from a trip. Normally it's around 32C idle.

Mine was quite a bit larger than my 3080 and barely fit in my old HAF X case with the cages in the front.

And yeah, MFG was much more usable than I anticipated. I played through Portal RTX and some CP2077 at 4x MFG and could not really tell the difference in latency vs 2x MFG, and can tell the diff with it off, but it's not enough to detract from the game and is worth keeping on IMO. Any artifacts I could find looked like they were from upscaling instead of generated frames, as I would see them with or without MFG enabled. But generally DLSS still looks as good or even better than native usually with the AA that is included with it at least.

Congrats Blackwell is great when found for a decent deal and new games love the architecture especially Battlefield 6.

Congrats! Yeah, framegen works very well with the Nvidia ML versions. I just have a "lowly" 4080 mobile in my notebook (2700mhz core in turbo mode, so close to a desktop 4070ti as all other specs are identical) , so 2x only but I love it. No artifacts I've seen, and it helps fill out the 240hz 2560x1600 screen :D.

Mine runs at 28654mhz as well, so far it been around 40c range, but our house is a ambient temp of 65F at night as well.
PNY makes good solid GPUs. I own a PNY 5090 and it's great. I've owned others in the past and never had issues.
Good to Know!

I bought it for $999 at Best buy, which is MSRP I believe, so far I'm really enjoying it.

I've been trying the different MFG setting, 2X, 3X and 4X, it's a nice feature.

nice!

Coming from my 2014 rig, 2nd one in the signature....this april i was set on the 5080 liquid suprim, but it was 2500 CDN. Settled for a 9070XT at 1000CDN for now. A great card, but still.
Let's see what nvidia brings next.

So much for the 5080 guys, I put on the new CableMod cable I got and it never worked again, I even tried the Nvidia adapter that I was using before and no luck, it is dead. So I returned it to Best Buy and got a Seasonic Focus GX-1000 instead.

Sorry to hear about the card. I gave up using aftermarket cables and stick with the included PSU cable.

I am confused. You returned the 5080 or the cablemod cable? PSU was replaced so maybe the 5080 is working with that? Or did the 5080 go bad, burned the cables and PSU so you needed a new PSU?

I returned the 5080 because it died, I also returned the CableMod cable, I bought a new Seasonic PSU instead so i didn't have to dick around with adapters or 3rd party cables.

Why not exchange it for a new one? I thought you'd gotten a huge discount on the 5080 you won't be able to replicate?

It was $999, MSRP a good price but they were sold out of the PNY's and others. I also needed to solve my cable dilemma, which I did by getting the Seasonic Focus ATX 3 GX-1000 on sale at Amazon for $179, now I have a dedicated 12V-2x6 cable and port. I'll take a look again at the 5080's once the holidays are over.

Oh, okay. Thought you were one of the guys who got in on the PayPal 20% off thing :).

Congrats on the 5080! Always nice when an upgrade gives a solid performance bump without the giant footprint – the PNY models seem much more manageable. Grabbing a Seasonic ATX 3.0 PSU and proper cables sounds like a smart move. Hopefully some post‑holiday deals pop up for anyone still on the fence.

That sucks. Hope you find something then. At least you got the refund and they didnt blame it on you. Always a worry dealing with high priced parts.

Yeah I'm terrified about this happening to me, also I just hate the hassle of having to return things online. I much prefer doing things in person, but I don't live near any computer stores anymore...

Glad the GPU died quickly for you and within the return window, otherwise it would have been way worse to deal with

Congrats. Now upgrade to a 5090.
If you scrolled up you would have noticed that I returned it due to it being defective (or was fried), but thanks anyway for the congrats. As far as the 5090, I would only get one if I won the lottery 😄

like this
it was working before you hooked up and aftermarket cable, it wasnt defective, it got killed...
Defective, broken, fried, bit the dust, whatever. I did talk to CableMod tech support and they said I had the correct cable and they had no knowledge of anything like that happening. So IDK, without a proper teardown of the card I can't say for sure what caused it to go south, it could've been the cable, or the card itself, we'll never know.

I use a cablemod cable for my 4080S w/o issue, so I kinda doubt that was the issue, especially if there was no damage visible on the cable or card connector.

I used one for my 4080 as well without issue for some time, I'm well aware that the cable is suspect, but I didn't see any visible damage and I confirmed it was the correct one. You would need to tear down the card in a lab to actually find the answer, and I wasn't paying for that.

Yeah it's tossup too much to tell really.

Sucks to hear man.. I'd buy the next MSRP card you see available though because with the RAM price hikes and Nvidia allegedly going to be leaving AIBs to source their own VRAM, I def don't see cards staying at or below MSRP for much longer after this month. But also, it's really a marginal upgrade over a 4080 so it's not like you're hurting much either and can do without MFG or miss a 5-10% performance difference.

I’m looking, the MSRP card are sold out at Best Buy right now, and that’s where I prefer to buy it due to ease of returns and 24 months financing. I did think the MFG was pretty cool, but you’re right in that it a slight bump in general performance.
