5.3 Months Until ...

Sadly, I feel that once this happens EVGA will become a dominant force again. Our only consolation is that if GPU3 supports the 480, it'll also bump up the efficiency for ATI cards, (which I feel most of our [H]er's have in their systems right now). Maybe we'll even get Kyle back into folding

Yeah, we gotta get him back into the Hoard. I guess I joined rather late on the time scale, so I was never around to see him quit folding. He must have some sweet ass demo hardware that could fold well, if only for the few weeks he is in possession of them.

I need a client that works with the GTX 480!!!!

I was looking at getting a pair of 470s but these things are too hot and too loud for me. I might need to do something as my GPU utilization is getting erratic according to MSI Afterburner.

I'm trying to get the wife to let me buy a new MSI 980a MB so I can toss in a few more GTX 260's but since I keep getting furloughed at work we are trying to cut down on the spending. Dang railroad.

I just realized my GPU client is folding under Vegas_P11 and my CPU is under VegasP_11. Well I guess it doesn't matter since Team 33 is getting the points and that's all that matters.

Anyone has some spare $$ for me so that I can put a bigadv rig together? Maybe one of 'em fancy new AMD six-core rigs? :3

I'm afraid that those fancy Thuban 6 core processors will not allow you to fold bigadv WU's :(

I've hammered away at that question over that the Stanford folding forums and it is very clear that you must have an 8 core processor to recieve them. The Core i7's get lucky in that while they are quad cores, the fact that they have 8 virtual cores fools the servers into thinking that it is an actual 8 core processor.

Now I think it is up for debate whether you can force VMware 3.0 into 8 cores even though you only have 6 cores for the Thuban. The problem is that even if you hack away at it, i'm afraid that there could be stability issues........

The overtake is still hovering around the 5 month mark and will likely drop a bit because of Tiger's hiatus, unless other people will make up for the ~240k PPD deficit. EVGA produced 7.5M points in the last 24hrs. We made less than 4.5M. Huge difference.

I'm not sure about the quantity of Ati vs nVidia cards here. Do you mean only on the team specifically or in the forum generally speaking?

I would guess he means the forum overall. AFAIK the [H]ardOCP staff all run AMD graphic cards ATM.

If you can lend me $5000, I can put several SR-2's w/x5650's in them :D

My wife just bought a new car today so no joy on an SR-2 until after I also buy her a bigger house. I make more money and we seem to find legitimate places to spend it :(

Plus everyone seems to be having sales today and my wife took note of all of them. I did remind her I just paid the IRS bill last month and I'm running a little light :( :(

And most of us members, being rational beings with short upgrade cycles, would probably have AMD cards as well.

If we can continue to rally and get SMP/GPU rigs up with new members we can grow our way out of the problem where as EVGA seems to be shrinking.
We have a superior active user history, but they have a higher number of active users. What's concerning is the production graphs of both teams that tell a different story, where our graph has a sharper downward trend over the past month. Even if we have acquired a few more members since last month, it hasn't really materialized in our long term production. It seems it has been good for a short term respite, but looking at our production back in March, I really wonder where we would be now if we didn't recruit extra members...?

When Southern Islands comes out in a few months, do we know yet how much they will be able to close the gap with the nVidia cards in folding performance? ATI hasn't released a whole lot of information on them yet, but I am pretty curious.

When GPU3 comes out, I have a feeling that many people may initially fold with their Fermi based cards only to downscale after they see their electric bills go up, and when they realize how much heat they put out. I remember Kyle mentioned in his review that it brought up his office temps over 10 degrees while running overnight. Something like that is going to put a serious load on a/c systems as well.

Ha! Just ask capreppy or myself what 3x 9800GX2 do to a room :p

SMP is where it is at.

I got one 9800GX2 and it's by far the hottest component in my little garden. A Q6600 at 3.1 GHz is positively freezing in comparison :)

I'd go with SMP/bigadv as well if I had the money for it.

I'm talking about the forum in general. I feel that many people outside the DC forum run ATI over Nvidia cards.

I find it amazing how we have reached a point where graphics cards are capable as functioning like a decent space heater. My computer room is not climate controlled and thus needs a window unit a/c for summer, and space heaters for the winter. I find that even on cooler days, my dual 5850 BE's were able to keep the room warm enough without having to turn on the heater when gaming. I can't even imagine what a pair of GTX 480's would do to this room on warmer days. Hell I still have my very first graphics card ever which is an old Cirrus Logic Local Bus VESA card.

I am curious about Southern Islands as I am a gamer and I know that even the 5850's really don't produce much in F@H to make it worth the electricity expenditures. I will definately skip SI as it probably isn't going to be a completely next generation bump in graphics power, but NI would be interesting if TSMC can get their act together.

I think it's pretty clear that GPU folding is becoming seriously limited with newer and newer architectures. I can run a farm of G92 cards and the temps are not too bad in the room except for a few weeks in the summer. The newer cards are getting a bad rep in this department and in power consumption. Regarding Ati, I am not holding my breath that any future client will see a significant change in performance. Close the gap perhaps a little, but nVidia is so far ahead especially with the 200-series of cards that there's an enormous gap to close, unfortunately. :(

No client is going to make the ATI cards perform better.

The fact is ATI cards architecture is completely different. And they just dont scale and perform the same as the NV cards do on these WUs.

Its unfortunate, but software changes arent going to fix it.

3 x 9800GX2
3 x GTX285

it IS a lot of heat.

Initial investment toward Big Adv Is high but the long term cost is much smaller. I've not actually done the analysis but I believe in the long run it will be a wash. If you take into consideration the heat (and the AC to keep temps even remotely in check) then Big Adv may win.

I am waiting like everome else for SR2 to come out. I would like to do one really smoking Big Adv rig but want to wait for others to pipe in regarding how well SR2 is going to do.

I'm beginning to think it is a myth, done just for PR.

well if standford new client does treat amd good i would be willing to just do f@h until then be milkyway for me

I agree. The fact that a single GTX 480 can best a 5970 in power consumption and be 60% more power hungry than a 9800GX2 blows my head off.

Folks is all like "oh no dis GX2 is cookin itself @ 90C draw'n 230W, I is shutting it down fo da summah!!! No prob I jest get a new 480 and put 360W in da same space." It's frickin amazing that they can put that much heat through the same dual slot blower design. Almost all 58xx cards use non-reference coolers by now, it will take another couple months for better Fermi coolers.

Then you still have the problem that a SLI GTX 470 setup overclocked running bigadv and GPU puts out 850 watts 24/7 which is over $750 dollars a year and over $1K a year if you us AC. I'm not air conditioning my 10ft by 10ft computer room this summer and 220W of bigadv easily raises temps from 30C to 35C with the door closed and the window open.

Well, as of last update we are officially under the 4 month mark. Don't recall ever seeing this soon an overtake period. Tiger is on hiatus, summer is coming and a few of us might slow down production but the CC has really roused the enemy troops more than even I expected. Sigh, is there no respite in sight? :(

lol summers coming and im ramping up.. woot for living in the bay area.. :D

I'd love to add more PPD, but I'm out of options here unless I got a money/hardware infusion. Or get to borg the new i7 930 system I built for my housemate :p

Frustrating is that I do have money in my account, but I don't want to use it because it's officially borrowed cash. Unless it's for my company or so, I don't buy anything with it.

Go on, Borg the 930...

Can't do anything at the moment as i'm on holiday but when I get back I hope to be able to take my production from about 800PPD to 5k PPD, then hopefully some more come June/July

I've jump up a 100k in the last 2 weeks. For me that's good, but compared to most of you fellers, that barely a drop in the bucket. Every little bit helps. 840,000 I'm closing in on the 1000000 points mark.

im pushing 12,500-13,500 PPD right now but thats about all i can do since im down to only 1 working machine til i cant justify spending another 450 dollars to build me a phenom II x6 rig.. though i may throw the 8800GT in this system if i can get it to run without effecting my GTX 260 PPD..

353, don't ever doubt your own contribution (sp?)

We were all small folders one time, and the team is still founded upon the small folder, it's you guys that make this team, not us

better to have 10 people like you than one person doing 70k ppd

keep up the good work!

Damn, they are at 3.6 months, and that's not counting the last two days they have been putting out 10mil ppd

they are over double our ppd now, we need to atleast take that back. Hopefully they can't keep these CC numbers up for too long
Posted via [H] Mobile Device

They are around 1 mil away from default!!

Hopefully tho they'll lose those 8 blades once the CC is done
Posted via [H] Mobile Device

Don't know, I've heard on the chat box they rented 8, but their team captain swears they just "aquired" them for the CC
