5.3 Months Until ...

Sadly - QFT.

The fact of the matter is, EVGA can gloat and say they caught up and/or passed us, but they did it by buying their way there; they get to sleep at night knowing that. Obviously we have the genmay bonus here that has been in place for awhile, but bucks vs forum access, I mean come on...BS. Anytime anyone from EVGA wants to come here and gloat, I'll simply reply exactly what I just typed....they bought their way there, they didn't earn it.

EVGA owner hates us. Has since we wrote a truthful review about its "custom" video card cooling system that was a POS. They advertise everywhere, but will not with us. I truly think it felt as though it was not getting as good of reviews as it "should have been" since it was an advertiser here. Not the first time we have lost money on writing truthful reviews.

Anyways, my point here is that HardOCP is likely a target for them in this game and NVIDIA is fully behind it funding the move to capturing the "title spot" with Folding. They want to use it for CUDA marketing. NVIDIA wants what you guys have and was willing to pay for it.

That makes this whole thing dirty to me and just not worth it any more. I am sorry, but that is how I feel. NVIDIA has turned Folding into a marketing center for itself.

I think it would be hilarious (and quite possible might I add) that EVGA passes us, and then we jump them shortly after. It's not like they're going to gain 1st and then stay ahead of us as long as we have of them....that won't happen. We have a more dedicated team than they ever will.

Again I'll reiterate I'll do whatever it takes, whatever I can to help the team. If I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd buy us ALL superfarms to shove that big dildo up their ass. :D

It's been about marketing ever since they stepped behind their team. They didn't even start their own team, they jumped in later after people had already set up a team

but, that's past now. I think it's a worthy cause to stick with, even if it is turning into the Corp. Swinging Dicks comp. I will fold because I have personal gains to be made if anything is found

The horde needs to stick with it, because I'm sure many other teams will still think of us as number 1, and once we get passed well actually have a target to shoot fo again, been a while since we had one of those lol

And thanks for the back story about why EVGA may not like us as more than just a team, funny how greedy a company can be when you see their true soul.

I could see our ranks increasing once passed. Easy to fight for the underdog. ;)

to add to the last part of your post.. i think what we need to do is create a sub forum that ONLY has the guides.. nothing else.. so that users can post their guides.. to help others.. because for i find a lot of the guides on here over extensive and much longer then they need to be.. along with that the guides the users here have made will not get buried by all the other threads created.. also we could have a second sub forum with reviews about various cards and hardware and how they perform with F@H..

but these are just idea's to stream line the process so that it makes it easier for new members to find the information they need instead of having to search for everything.. the current guide is nice but its a friggin mess in my opinion.. just makes it a pain in the ass to find anything.. i would rather have each section as its own thread.. so winSMP has a thread, VM bigadv SMP thread and have the threads locked so they dont get flooded with useless posts..

the only other way of doing this besides making a sub forum is to make a Wiki page with guides that can be edited by the users here so that when things are updated by F@H we can update the guides accordingly..

the wiki is probably the best option of all of them and would save us(the people that have been here the longest) and all the new people thinking about joining F@H or the team the headaches we currently go through trying to troubleshoot peoples issues..

I know we have a folding website for the team.. but seriously how many of us use it? since the only way to access that website on [H] currently is by going to the news page.. most people as with myself have the forums bookmarked and not the main news page.. as a team and a forum we could do a whole lot better of a job streamlining everything and making it far more user friendly then it currently is..

Have to say that this would be an excellent start, having used several of the existing guides myself i would be happy to chip in and assist whereever i can.

I also think that the existing website needs some revisions - i don't think we should totally abandon it as it serves as a good starting point - It certainly could do with a direct link direct to the DC forum and links to the new guides/wiki, whichever way we decide to go.

GPUs have been losing out to SMP ever since -bigadv, I don't think that will change.

I don't mean to sound like it is a lost cause, but I honestly don't see us making up the difference. We simply do not have the money to make it happen.

I think we could reach out to our video card forums there and actively recruit, but beyond that I don't know if it will make a difference. Keep in mind, this is something that NVIDIA wants BADLY and is willing to pay for it.

Well then KB i guess you are going to have to start giving NV better reviews ;)....jk

Thats the one thing i appreciate about [H] reviews, yall always tell it how it is.

On a side note i think recruiting in the video card section is a great idea.

Valuter, didnt you write something up at one point that we could use for posting in the Video Card section?

I've mentioned numerous times we could use help holding EVGA off in the video card sections.
Of course you get the typical "you're wasting money/killing the planet". Every once in awhile, I'm able to point a user to the DC section when they state they are curious about F@H.

P/S. The redhead looks the best. The RA3 look like typical stick models. :D

Kyle, a single i7 920 can produce more ppd with half the power than 2x GTX275s. With a lot less headachs I might add as well.

We need to get the OC guys and multi CPU folks folding. They will make as big or bigger impact than the GPU guys.

Nexus (in sig) out produces 3x 275s while using 200 watts. It isn't even a contest.

While that is all correct we will see a larger audience in the GPU section. If you look at the main forum page you can see the number of users in each section. There are droves of people in the GPU areas.

Also it is highly likely that those with i7's and OCd boxes will likely see that section as well.

That said if we could get a sticky in both the video card main and OC section that would be the best situation.

It doesn't just have to be in the nvidia GPU forum, there are recruitment opportunities for ATi card users as well as the multipl cpu's sub forum, that could be an excellent recruiting ground and may not take much - having lurked a couple of times it looks like a lot of them run systems 24/7

I said VIDEO CARD FORUMS, I do realize it is not all about NV when it comes to producing.

Now how about mentioning some way to actually do it?

amen to that. We need to recruit peep from Intel Processors, Overclocking & Cooling, Multiprocessing Systems but then also nVidia Flavor.

Very correct sir.

If you guys would put together a specific post for AMD and one for NVIDIA with very specific and well detailed instructions, I can post them in the VC forums and stick them and draw attention to them.

You can all get together and build the threads here, tweak them, and I can move them over later.

I don't think we can generate enough interest, but if you guys will make the move to help yourselves, I am all good with that.

I didn't know that there was something actually sinister giong on, but that is why i've been a reader of HardOCP ever since they started up. I enjoy reading reviews that are truthful, and ones that don't sound like a giant 8 page advertisement for a product. HardOCP tells it like it is, and they don't suck sausage just to avoid loosing advertising dollars.

I say again that we stick with this. Recruiting more actively in the GPU and OC sections of the forum may be a good idea as I honestly didn't really pay much attention to this folding thing until Kyle put out a message on the main page of hardocp. There is nothing wrong with being in 2nd place, so long as we each do what we can to contribute to the cause. From what i'm reading, it does sound like the nV and eVGA crap has corrupted a good cause, but I just started folding and have no plans to quit folding. I am a small person here who still hasn't folded enough Win SMP units to get a bonus, but we each do what we can. I originally wasn't even going to bring my desktop rig into this, but I decided to after seeing the spirit here which is the VERY example of what folding is supposed to be about.

Because of you guys, I am now looking into upgrading the cpu cooler on my rig just so I can quiet the dustbuster fan(at 5900rpms, it would make even Hitler deaf) and overclock it some more to generate MORE points for the team. The cpu never gets this hot and loud during gaming, and I would never consider spending money for something unless I saw that it was worth while.

You mean by actually stating where to download the GPU/SMP clients?
I think the guides do a well enough job. It's why I suggest they head here to the DC section and check out the guides.
Since I don't run AMD, I've suggested they PM EvilAlchemist when asked about setting up the GPU for some AMD lovin. :p

No dufus, not how to install, how to get people on our team and installing. :D

Hey I resemble that remark. :D
The suggestion of cleaning up the guides and making sure they are up-to-date.
Maybe listing a group of Folders as PM contacts in case of trouble/questions while installing might be a way to help new people to shy to post in the threads?

Out of curiosity, I didn't see this suggested yet so here it goes..... *ducks for cover in cse of fallout*

I don't know if this would be possible, but do you think a merger might be possible with other top producing teams? I bet there are a few of them that would also not like to see a financially backed and stacked team take the number one spot, kind of like how many people always seem to love rooting for the team that the Yankees are playing against. Myself, i'm a huge Yankees fan but only because our Cincinnati Reds disappoint me every single damn year.

ah, an Ohio guy

Anyways, Due to forum loyalties and the feeling of home most of us have here, I dotn think any of the top 10 teams would ever merge, nor should they really. We're only gonna be in second place, its not like we lost everything.

The more I think about it, I actually can't wait to get passed, I look forward to the ensuing war we will wage to get back to first, I'm curious to see how much EVGA will shell out for the next iteration of their bonus scheme, They can't push too hard or they will get moved to aggregate. I'm all for the fight, and maybe some Tiger Hunting (ok, more like trailing, no way I can make up a 70 mill gap lol) later this year

I'm liking the idea of a revamp of HardFolding and using a wiki for guides, but if we go wiki, is there a way to make sure only certain people can update? I'm not so much worried about sabotage as I am about mis-information getting in there.

And yea, I did a write up that was supposed to go front page but that idea fizzled out shortly after I got it peer reviewed. I'll see if I can find it again tomorrow night and update it, I'm going out tonight with some of my troopies and getting slammed, but I'm free tomorrow during work lol.

This was done in the old days, but I believe Stanford does not permit team amalgamations anymore. Even if it were allowed, I don't see us combining with another team and don't think the majority on this or any other major team would agree to a merger.

So, after 6-ish pages reading through this thread, I'll voice my opinion, albeit however small it is. First, I think we need to analyze who we are, who makes up the [H]orde.
  • Looking at Extreme Overclocking, we are made up of 808 active folders and a hair more than 14,000 inactive ones.
  • Our average PpD is 6,000.

If you scale the EOC numbers by points, you find something that we all may have already known.
  • 65% of our members are pulling 6,000 or more PpD
  • Our members doing 800 PpD or less only make up 13% of our daily points

I feel that I represent the smaller population in the [H]orde; the small folder that does less than 5k PpD, but more than 3k PpD. According to Extreme Overclocking, there are only 59 of us. The majority of folders are doing so on (now) midrange dual/quad chip (i.e.: Q6600) and doing SMP or just folding on a midrange video card (i.e.: GTX 260/275) and pulling our team average PpD, which is almost 6k. We need to take advantage of our core competency of pursuing the midrange folder, not the super high end.

I'm going to assume that the majority of members here are running seemingly average hardware. For example, lets say a Q6600 and a single GTX260. What we need to do is target these members.

  1. We should publicize our efforts in the video card forums, both processor forums, as well as the OC & cooling forum. Why OC & cooling? F@H could be used as a method of stress testing video cards on top of other programs such as Furmark, especially since F@H crashes GPUs when Furmark will pass them. (This is just a thought.)
  2. The guides need a definite renovation. In my opinion, the 2 current stickies need to be scrapped and redone, even if it has the same information, to be more aesthetically pleasing as well as easier to follow. Of course, the original authors will be given credit for the information provided, regardless who's the OP.
For example, while looking at FrEaKy's thread, and going to the -bigadv section, all I see is a wall of text.
    • Each step should be set off my quotes, and concisely, but accurately described.
    • Pictures should also be used for each step, highlighting the necessary changes/values to be made.
  3. I also think that having a downloadable script that automates as much as possible would be awesome. We want to make the installation of F@H (both CPU and GPU) as easy a possible. If this is put into effect, it may negate the problem of number 2, but we would still need a guide for this.
  4. I would also like too see a monthly newsletter brought back. I know that Xil used to do that, I think, but it's been a while and I miss it. Plus, it keep the [H]orde up to date on what's going on with its members.

Anyway, I still feel that we should look inwards before we change what we do on the outside. We definitely should not give up on F@H just because we are passed. Like others have said, EVGA may take first, but can they actually hold on to it? We, at Hardforum, have the members necessary to push them back, and even hold them off, but we need to find how to convert our members to F@H soldiers.

Lol, F@H soldiers, I like that :)

its not a bad idea.. but i dont see it happening.. we do have people that switch over from another team to [H] here and there.. but a full merger i just dont see happening.. to many diehard people that have put way to much time and effort into their own teams to switch..

Yeah, I was putting a merger out there just to see what the possibilities are. However if Stanford won't allow it anymore, then it is no use. Personally, I think more people could be open to a merger if the name of the new team fully represented both teams. I am finding that people are really into this stuff hardcore and are willing to spend a LOT of their own money to fold for their team and for the good of scientific progress.

You know, noone and not even the Roman Empire stayed in first place forever. Staying in first place forever could get boring, and I know that I will always fold for this team so long as we are here and we still get WU's to work on. I don't like running this desktop 24/7 like I am right now, so my next goal is to save for a kickass boxen by later this year that will just be my folding rig. Til then, this desktop will stay on full time to help make points along with my laptop. It will have an AMD processor as I don't buy Intel, but I am very curious and hope one of you guys pick up the new Thubans when they are out. We know that Phenoms get trounced on by Core i7's and especially the Gulftown, but I wonder if Thuban will help close the gap.

I see a lot of Deja Vu from the days back when another team was about to pass us, and did. But with time and perseverance we have prevailed. I'm not going to look at this with the eyes of a few months or even a couple of years. We've been banging away at this for 9 years now and in those nine years many things have changed and changed the way this has worked. It used to be the CPU and core/memory speed was the key to the best production. However in the last few years that has changed and gone to the GPU with Nvidias cores being the best at it. But now "recently" with the -bigadv units and desktop cores like the i7 one can see where that could be changed again, least wise have a direct effect on it. Not to mention any pending GPU core releases from Stanford that may allow the ATI cards to shine bright as well.

The point being this is and has been an ever changing evolution. Despite how much we try to set our selves up, it has changed around us. Our best solution (IMO) is to simply do our best to keep participation going and "arm" ourselves to fit the times. Our ability to adapt to the changes is what has helped keep the team and it's production strong. We haven't always been #1 on the statistics listings. But we have always done our best and worked to be there over these many years and despite the obstacles to this point, it is we the [H]ardOCP team that can call ourselves the first team to 3 Billion points and that makes us The In[H]ordeous Bastards. :D

Why hasn't Stanford optimized the ATi client?

Does nVidia donate more money to Sanford then ATi?

Just thinking out load!

or why hasn't stanford attempted to revamp their windows systray client and integrate A3/bigadv/GPU all in one simple easy-to-install interface. the average joe doesn't know what a command prompt and definitely isn't technical enough to setup the SMP client

We are moving to eventually have a universal client. Our v7 client will be our first step, but it will take a while to get all the way there. Our goal is to make it easy for people to donate computer time, but there are several new developments which have to be done to get there.

Once A3 is fully up and running & A1 / A2 is dis-continued, there will be no need for the MPCHI setup in dos anymore.
This is eliminate one huge problem with F@H installation and running.

The main problem with the universal client setup is already happening on a small scale.
Many users are loading client 6.29 and wondering why they are only getting 200 PPD and using 1 Core.
Many are running the uni-processor client because they did not know about the -smp flag.

Some have suggested making the client -smp by default, but other don't want this because they can not or will not use 100% of their computer for F@H.

It is a very complex issue once you start looking at all the variables.

Personally, I think we should all forget about who is # 1, # 2 and concentrate on improving what we have.

If EVGA contines there Bucks program, science wins. If you want to "beat" EVGA, don't buy there products!

Most of my stuff is EVGA, I admit. But from now on I will be buying motherboards from other manufactures.
My next video card will be an ATi, I have to have a triple monitor or projection system!
But, in the future, if I buy a nVidia, I will be trying a Galaxy card. Since Kyle is a good shot!!

I'm I going to hurt EVGA's bottom line? HELL NO! But on the other hand, I won't be a hypocrite.
Every time I buy a EVGA product, that money goes to there EVGA Bucks program! It's all how you look at it.

A lot of you have been around a lot longer then me. For that, I will trust that EVGA's #1 will not last long.

As I opened with, we should just work on what we have and excite other members of the forums to see if they are willing to join the fight! Fight for a cure, not #1 in the world.

Good to see Stanford working on a simple CPU client. I think a modest revamp ofthe settings / config menu in the current clients and we could accomodate all the options you would need

Hope it comes soon, along with support for a CPU % control that works, borging may go back in style :)

You know, if Stanford got the smp client running right and deployed it to all of the computers out there that are set up wrong on the classic client, it's highly possible we would see a huge jump in ppd from it as all of the multi processor systems out there running the wrong client because the owners weren't tech savvy enough to set them up right suddenly started firing on all of their cylinders. I can get about 12x the amount of points from the smp client that I can from the classic...

This is very true, and was the point that I was trying to make in my post. We have a bunch of folders using the standard client, but their systems can EASILY handle the SMP client. They just haven't gotten around to updating them yet. Personally, I think Stanford need to update their installer by completely automating it. It would be great if the installer ran a benchmark to see what kind of program to use (standard, SMP, -bigadv) and then installed that specific program, asking only username, team number, and passkey. Then the user can change anything in the preference section at their own will. What would make this even better is if they made it auto updating, so that when A4 or A5 came out, you didn't need to reinstall the whole thing. The installation would just re-run the benchmark and install whatever new updates are necessary. A la Windows Update, or something of the like.

Core updates are already automatic, all they would need to do is incorporate a benchmark app (easy, just scan number of CPU cores and then give the options in a one click manor for which core to run). Ontop of that, all they would need is for a client update check similar to GPUz that runs every month and just installs over the current app, presto, future friendly and user friendly

of course, it's been almost 3 years since I touched any programming language, so I'm not sure how hard that would be, but there are countless small apps out there that do the same things, can't be too much to ask for

Or else, they actually use their computers for stuff and don't want the drop in performance that using the SMP client instead of the classic client would entail.

Then they could select standard smp after the client runs it's benchmark and then select a CPU utiliazation % inthe same window

plus te windows client is getting good at task managing

there is so much potential for a universal CPU client
