Well the good news is that ATI seems to be writing their drivers to take multi-GPU setups better, esp. since they seem dedicated to this, and Nvidia likely as well. Hopefully with all the swirl around GPGPU and what not, devs will code future games to support multi-GPU better as well.
And an old game should not have any trouble with the performance 4870 puts out anyways
That's exactly it. Newer games which need all the power of a 4870X2 will be supported through the drivers. Older games that aren't supported won't need that much power. Even a single 4870 will most likely allow you to run older games at max settings.
