UPDATE: after first format, installed 177.83 drivers, screen is fked after reboot. after 2nd format, i installed older 175.19 drivers whql certified, screen still got fked after reboot. is my card faulty or what?

hi, i just removed my 4870x2 and returned it, and instead downgraded to a evga 9600gt ssc to hold me over until more intensive games come out. now the mistake i made was that i did not uninstall the ati drivers/ccc and related stuff before removing my 4870x2. now when i installed the 9600gt, my screen looks really screwed up in windows normal mode. part of it is cut off and now looks like its displaying in 4:3 aspect ratio. i tried uninstalling the ati ccc through the control panel but that doesnt exactly work when i cant even see the start menu nor does it show up when pushing the windows key on keyboard. i also used the catalyst control removal tool on amd's website. i go into safe mode and use driver cleaner pro to remove ati/ati ccc/ ati uninstall utility, and all the other things under ati. i tried goign into control panel again to remove it since its still there, but it only says "change/repair", not uninstall. boot up into windows normal mode again and it still shows its ugly head. i install the nvidia 177.83 drivers and restarted, but same junk. please help.

notice that the sides of the screen are blanked out and darkened? and notice how most of the left side of the screen in windows is cut off. cannot access or see start menu.

boot into safe mode and then add remove programs and then uninstall ati software.

reboot

install nvidia drivers

I think there's a program called Driver Cleaner that will get rid of any possible trace of old drivers - try googling for it.

drivercleaner.net it cost 9.99 buts its pretty awesome and you only need to buy it once

I had a similar issue with a 9600gt when I was using a DVI cable. What type of cable are you using?

My monitor had an auto configure setting for the placement of an image. Once I enabled that it was fine.

the image works fine before windows splash and desktop. i can see the post screens just fine. im using a dvi->hdmi cable because my monitor only supports vga, hdmi and component.

Sorry about the reformat. I was going to suggest Safe Mode, Driver Cleaner.. reboot, go into safe mode again and uninstall your video card via Device Manager, reboot it into windows, when it auto detects the 9600, refuse the install of drivers via windows, and install the latest WQHL driverset by nVidia.

Hope this new install works for you.

update!: nvidia 177.83 drivers cause my screen to look like the same as it just did in my initial screenshots after rebooting!

Try going back to an ATI card, reinstall everything, then uninstall it before putting in the 9600?

If nothing else, may as well just format reload windows.

aghh i formatted AGAIN!

now im using the 175.19 drivers, still the same issue after i reboot. if i dont install the display drivers, the display runs fine, and i can see the whole 1920x1200 res. but everytime after i install drivers and reboot, my screen gets fvked again!

you mean you reformatted for nothing? dammit. sorry to here that.

does a smashed pin distort the image in safe mode or windows installation mode? as far as i know, prior to installing the drivers, but after finishing a fresh vista install, i am able to to see the entire screen just fine normally.
