I was thinking, if the 4850 is this good, and so far it seems to be, the 4870 should be a very exciting card for everyone involved...

The 4850 is getting very solid reviews, being 'about' as fast as a 9800GTX depending on what review you read.

Everything so far points to the 4870 being around 30% faster again, so should come in close to GTX260 performance at maybe around $100 cheaper.

The 4870 uses the same GPU as the 4850, clocked 20% higher. The memory is significantly faster though, at 80% faster. We should see some impressive high resolution scaling (especially where mem bandwidth is the bottleneck,) in AA and AF bound situations, maybe. If shaders are the bottleneck, it would probably be closer to 20% than 80% faster.

When is the 4870 due to be released? I had thought it was this coming week? Either way there is no way nvidia can compete with this level of price/performance. Get 90% of the speed of a x280 for half the cost? No brainer there.

They both get released this Monday/Tuesday but 4870s arnt expected to hit the shelves until July because of memory manu problems. 4850s are avaliable in mass now.

The 4870 is expected to be available on the day of the release, but in very limited numbers due to GDDR5 availability, unlike the 4850.
What memory manufacturing problems? From what I hear, problems have been sorted out and manufacturing is ramping up.

Ahh, thanks guys! Newegg will most likely be in full gouge mode when they are released. I may try to grab one if they are 300 and I can find one at one of the online shops. I'd be happy with one or two 4850's but the heat output is too high on these cards. It's hot enough in my office already.

So if one were to play Crysis etc at 1280x1024, with good amounts of AA, would the 4870 scale well for AA on lower res?. So like 4xAA with Crysis on High doable with a 4870. The 4850 doesn't seem like it can at the moment.

I doubt the 4850 runs any hotter than any other similar card. It's only hot due to the ineffective single slot cooler. Right now my 3870 card idles at 62 degrees (fan off). I'm thinking about getting the AC cooler for my 4850 before I install it.

Will there be huge gains in using DDR5 vs DDR3 of the 4870 vs 4850? I just picked up two 4850 cards for $161.61 each (for myself and gf, after taxes in Cali).

I went from a Radeon 9800Pro ( that card served me surprisingly well :) ), to a now integrated graphics solution (within the last 2 months - very temporary as I'm in the middle of upgrading, I'm a poor college student LoL...), to the 4850.

The 4850 will keep you happy for a long time and is an incredible upgrade to your 9800pro.

I thought the release/launch date was Wednesday the 25th???

Or did it change again?

the original release of the 4850 and 4870 was the 25th of June. but since things got out of hand with the 4850 they brought it forward to Thursday, 19 June 2008. The 4870's release (and NDA) is still Wednesday, 25 June 2008.
