Time to replace my 260's, and with 1 fermi making nearly what my 2 260's do with half the power and heat, its time to think upgrade.

So do the numbers justify a new 560 vs a clearout 460?

Everyone has $30 mirs on 460s, and 786meg 460s can be had in the $150 range.

This is a purely folding desicion, as I rarely game, and its not crAZy FPS or such games.

So, can you's give some guidence.

I can share some info on the GTX 460s. I have 3 MSI GTX460s 786mb GPUS with the two fans attached (twin frozr or something like that). They all easily overclock to 900/1800+ on the shaders with a very small voltage bump and they never get hotter than 60C. I get between 12K-12.5K PPD from each one.

Sorry, I don't know much about the GTX560s except they are usually around $200 and overclock better and run cooler than the GTX 460s.

A regular 560 won't be much different in terms of folding performance, a 560 ti on the other hand will be good for about ~14k at stock clocks due to the increase in shader count

I have not OC'ed my 460s. Can you share your settings so I could try to bump my points?

What kind of voltage bump? I don't think I have tried that on a GPU.

i think you should go for the 560ti, i believe OC'd they are pulling 15-16k. My moderately OC'd 460 is barely hitting 10.5k

I've got my 460 @ 816/1632 on stock voltages and i'm only getting 11.1k max. I'm with 86 5.0L the 560ti is your best bet

Sure! I use MSI afterburner to overclock them. I just set my goal for 1800 for the shaders. I bumped my voltage (have to allow voltage adjustment in the settings in MSI Afterburner) by 13mV steps. I think at stock they were at 1000mV. Between the 3 cards, I think they are around 1037mV and 1050 mV for my overclocks. Also, I turned "auto" off for the fans and manually set them to about 80%. I don't mess around with the memory clocks.

You might have to put up with F@H erroring out a few times. So you may want to wait until you get a fresh unit so you don't lose an almost completed one. Usually a failed unit indicates that you're not giving it enough voltage. In my experience, it seems that if the card goes into 2d clocks (usually at least have of stock clocks), it means it is overheating or you've gone over the limit of the card's ability to overclock. 70C is the highest I would go. My 400 series fermis seem to get unstable beyond that.

Anyone, feel free to add something I might have missed. Good luck!

woot!!!
my gtx 460 ssc+ wtih a core clock of 851 and shaders at 1702 only gets about 11000-12000 ppd
