I'm looking to eyefinity 4 monitors (3 would be 1 group and extended on the fourth). My monitors don't have display ports, and so from what I read I would have to buy active adapters for the last two monitors. If I just buy another 5870 would I be able to use the DVI on the second card?

It seems it would be better to go ahead and get another card instead of spending 200$ on adapters.

Is there something I'm missing or is this the only way? :(

without crossfire you can get 6 monitors on those 2 video cards.
with crossfire you can get 3 monitors from those 2 cards.
with only one card you can get only 3 monitors from that card.

You will have to wait for the Eyefinity 6 edition.. that's the only card that will be able to power more than 3 displays in a crossfire or single GPU configuration.

if i were to run the 3 main displays on the 5870 and put in another gpu i have lying around just to power the extended display would it work?

something like 3 monitors on the 5870 for gaming etc and a single monitor on a x1900xt just for extended desktop
