3x 30" Portrait 6970 CF Eyefinity vs 580 SLI Surround Showdown

Awesome! So wouldn't the Sandy Bridge setup be faster than the 990x x58 for gaming?

It would be, but the difference should be minimal. Let's not forget that he's going to be using four GTX 580's. That means he's going to need more PCI-Express bandwidth / lanes than P67 / H67 can offer.

Having unlocked multiplier is very nice. He is also going for his own liquid cooling solution. He should get much better results with his 990X than sandy bridge. Ivy Bridge on the hand, would probably surpass Sandy Bridge. But that is all speculation at this point. My upgrade cycle for this year is basically the HD 6990 and that's it. Waiting on intel to finally make a chipset that supports USB 3.0 Serial ATA 6.0. Hopefully there will be a X68 in 2012 :)

Duh, good point.

Yeah, been working on the budget for my next build and what I want to do when. It's obviously too early to know what things are going to look like but with Windows 8 on the horizon I'll probably just do a GPU refresh this year and do a full system upgrade next for Windows 8. The the thing I'm waiting for are $2500 and under 1 TB SSD drives, they are getting close to that mark now.

6970 crossfire here on a P55, albeit only two of them and a single display. No stuttering or tearing issues to report. I do happen to be using two CF bridges, but only for coincidental driver install reasons, not been inside the case to take the other one off yet :p

Why is everybody removing one of the crossfire bridges? Is there a theory that the bridges are linked to the tearing some people are experiencing.

I dont think there is any problem with crossfire by itself. I only run into problems when i activate eyefinity while running crossfire.

I did some videos with my iphone, it is not the best way to demonstrate the problem but this is the best i can do.

PS: I am using 2 crossfire bridges. I also swapped my cards (a-b to b-a) but the problem persists.

I also realised that image tearing is only happening on the dvi monitors, but since my displayport monitor is having artifacts, i prefer playing with screen tearing i suppose..

Are you using mismatched monitors? Could that cause problems?

Yes i am using 3 Different dell 24inch models. Same resolution and specification though.

Dell 2407fpw, Dell 2407fpw-hc, Dell 2408wfp via displayport

Thats it. Sold my second 6950 and waiting for nvidia to release a 2gb card or a 3gb card that costs around 300$

Keep waiting. I don't see that happening for some time.

That's your card right there bro. There will be no other models at 2gb other than 560Ti. Perhaps other manufacturers but around $300, this is your choice on the nvidia side. Great card too.

Edit: damn it, Exodia beat me to it whilst I was responding to other posts. That reply wasn't there when I opened the thread :p

and this.

Get 2, be happy.

Going to need that 2gb of memory for Crysis 2.

Those Recommended settings is just nuts.

WTB 6990

I was saying that i hope it would be 4gb of accessible and not just 2gb, good grief /facepalm

Nice! Those 560 looks just like what i need. Makes more sence on the wallet compared to 580GTX 3gb.

That's what I said when I read the super duper high end setting :p Lets hope it doesn't have any future delays.

Any updates on how DCS A-10C final release runs (as compared to the beta) Vega?

I just got back from vacation. I'll test the final release A-10C with my new UD9 990x system with four of the 3GB 580s. It will be a few days as I will re-install Win 7 with the final SP1 that came out today.

That's not just an SLI limitation it's crossfire too, which is why you get weak performance on a 4870X2, it's only using a single 4870's worth of performance. Any reason you're going for a GTX580 instead of an unlocked HD6950?

Hi Vega, could you please test something for me? I'm trying to find a solution to a VRAM problem where I try to run two windowed EVE clients at at 1920x1500 with 8xAA or higher. The 3GB Palits seems promising for this but I would like to have it verified before I go on a shopping spree. My current 4870x2 card grinds to a halt if I try anything near that AA setting but that isn't surprising with only 1GB of effective VRAM though.

1920x1500? Thats a strange resolution. ;) I custom set that resolution and with two clients running with 8x AA, I was using 1220 MB VRAM. I kicked it up to 16xQ AA, VRAM usage went up to 1713.

I ran 3x 2560x1600 Eve clients each with 16xQ AA and they used 2990 MB VRAM. 3GB 580s are sweet. :D

get some pics up Vega! =D

I will but place is still a mess. I had to dremel off the handle risers on my benchtop case in order to fit the UD9.

Awesome, thanks. My 3GB 580 will be delivered tomorrow so looking forward to fire up 3-4 clients as it all of a sudden is enough headroom for that.

I know it is a little strange resolution but it fits in nicely with Ventrilo and such running along the sides. What program do you use to check VRAM usage btw?

Like yang said, MSI Afterburner or NvidiaInspector also works good and there is also GPU-Z.

Hi Vega, I should have my 990x and 3 Palit 3gb gtx580's in the next two or three weeks. See that you got the 990x running at 4.6ghz with a stock cooler. What's your vcore? I was planning on getting a custom cooler and have also thought about putting two Thermalright TY140 fans on the stock cooler. I have 6x2 ram modules on order and the bigger coolers don't fit on the Rampage extreme III. I could also drop 2 modules and leave the first two slots open so I can install a Thermalright Silver Arrow. Watercooling is not an option for now. Not planning for any records either. If I can run 4.5ghz on stock heatsink I'll be a happy camper. I plan on 3x30 landscape so I can use the setup for both work and flight simulators. Also, if the fps are too low I can just go tri sli on the centre screen. Right now I got 3x22 in lanscape so either way will be better than what I have now.

I'm curious to see the difference in Tri Sli between the i2600K and the 990x at equal ghz. Thanks for the benchmarks on the Palits. Most reviewers test them on a single 1080 monitor in fps games. Not very helpfull.

Another monster system being built by BigC, nice to see. It should be handy for you two having someone with a similar system to compare notes with.

I know other board members in the DC section have found their intel hexcore overclocks lower in relation to CPU temps well within the normal operating range (eg: stable at 60C, fail at 70C). You can do a cpu only watercooling loop very cheap ($150 to $190 depending on which rad you want).

4.6 on the stock cooler is REALLY pushing it with 1.40 vcore. I'd get a NH-D14 or something if I was going to stay on air for sure. I've just kept the stock cooler as I will be putting on the water block soon.

What is the practical vcore limits for 32nm without significantly hurting the chip? I want to push my 2600k further now that I have the watercooling on it.

You can safely take them over 1.5v. However you shouldn't need to unless you are trying to take it over 5.0GHz. In which case your chip may or may not do that regardless of the voltage. These things have multiplier limits and they'll hit a wall at some point. For those it's usually around 49x-50x
