3x 120Hz Eyefinity Portrait Setup

Landscape, blasphemy! Just kidding, landscape is real nice for racing sim's.
 
I like this a lot. Can you say how/why you chose these monitors in the first place? I'm curious because the panel bezels inside of these are soooo tiny, it's as if you knew they would be perfect before you even started!

I have three Dell U2412m's, I was wondering if you could guess as to the size in the Dell's - I'd only be interested in doing it if there was huge reductions in bezel size to be had, and not just 3-4mm (yours are a perfect example of huge gains).
 
Generally LED panels are going to be pretty thin underneath the bezel. I'd wager your Dell's bezels could be halved if done properly.
 
does the "if done properly" bit mean i should expect some tricky parts to getting it down to its minimum? For example, in your guide you took off an extra part to shave off an extra 1.5mm, is this the type of thing you mean?

I'm very intrigued to give this a go, just put my monitors in portrait mode and fired up an HD movie, it's mighty impressive, especially as the aspect ratio is wider than 16:9. Brings movies in cinema-type aspect ratios to life.
 
I removed the casing off of one of my U2412s, you save about half like Vega said, however mounting is going to be fairly creative, as the Case(plastic bezel) ends up supporting the VESA mount as well, the electronics underneath which house the VESAmount are only taped onto the back of the panel, granted it's some heavy duty tape.

I was wondering, maybe some heavy duty glue :p? or a weld of some sort? I Don't know once I get an Arm I'm stripping all 3 monitors and figuring something out.

Damn, that's annoying. Let me know how it goes, as i'm still interested in this.

I never thought i'd like portrait mode (i bought them for landscape mode), but the moment i set it up like this, i'm sold.I could just do with the smaller bezels now!

I know you arent a big fan of LLL setup but that is what I plan on doing. Do you think the stand you have will be able to do LLL with these monitors with the bezel removed? The site says 21" for 3 monitors. Or should I look at another stand such as the DS100 Triple Stand?

I assume this will also work with the bezel removed since it supports 360 degree rotation.

The largest issue is that these monitors are real fragile inside. Especially when handling the circuit boards and ribbon cables etc. Along with that is removing the micro-fan with a heat gun when gutting the base/stand. Since the bezels and sub-housing retainers are removed I had to custom secure the LCD panels to the backlights so that they do not fall out. ;)

LOL, this is [H] if it hasnt been done already, it will be done, and if your a pioneer... your set for life, and you my friend... are a pioneer! if you can explain it all many people would be very happy and you shoudl get an affiliate deal with samsung :d
 
Vega, have you hooked these up to your 7970 yet? If so, how do you have them connected.

I have 3 750D's and it looks like I'll need a DVI-D to DP adapter but I can't find one that supports 120hz.
 
There is no such adapter. You will need to either get an Asus DCUII 7970, a 7990 or a Samsung 700D.
 
Looks like the early shots of the 7990 showed only 2 miniDP ports. On the other hand, MSI's custom 7970 showed 4, similar to the Asus DCuII.

So for 5+, it's going to be the Flex only apparently.
 
Hi Vega, do you think this mod will also work on the s23a700d model? Seems like it would be even easier given the fact that all the pcb/components are mounted at the back panel rather than at the base.
Not sure about the "potential spot" for the VESA mounting point though...

Believe it or not, the 700D is even harder to setup because the PCB blocks the mounting points and the ribbon cable is so short you can't move it out of the way. The 750D had a nice long ribbon cable.
 
Thanks for the prompt response vega, good that I've asked you first before pulling the trigger.

Decided on going with the 750Ds, now that I am having trouble figuring how to connect 3x750D with 680's in SLI in 3D surround.
The DP to DP issue seems to be solved with the latest driver but that still leaves one monitor unconnected. HDMI is out of the question as it doesnt support 120hz. Does a dual link DVI (from card) to DP (750D) adapter exist?
What are your thoughts on this?

Honestly, a third 680 would solve all your problems. Well, besides the hole left in your wallet. :)

I have yet to see a reliable Dvi to Dp adapter that can do 120Hz. Really 2x 680's aren't fast enough to do 120Hz Surround properly anyways, or 3D Surround.
 
Very interesting. Excellent work Vega. Some time ago I had the idea to remove the bezel and try such a setup--but never had the bravery to pull apart the monitors.

I had settled on the ideal setup being a PLP setup--30" dell ultrasharp 2560x1600 in the middle with portrait rotated 1600x1200 monitors on the left and right side.

What no one mentioned was that eyefinity does not support PLP mode, and then second, in windowed mode, AMD drivers use 1 GPU. So my 6990 goes to waste, as do my additional monitors, unless I can run a game at 4960x1600 with one 6970. (no).

SO!.

For me, I cannot tolerate 1080p resolution. having 1600 vertical resolution is phenomenal-1080 is nice for movies, but not for games. The center 30" screen is beautiful.

But your setup makes me wonder what's better. Your 3 monitors would be 3240x1920, which is pretty sweet. But my single monitor is 600 pixels less than the entire width of the setup, and has no lines (bezels) at all.

Just a thought: Originally my ideal setup was 3 1080p projectors, lined up. Or two even--0 bezel & any size.

Your setup is sweet..but...all that work for 600 extra pixels, can't do it!

Vega will tell you projectors are terrible for gaming but it’s entirely user preference. They only have 60hz projectors right now and only 1080p so what I have done is setup an amazing projector setup for certain simulators where I can stand 60hz (once you play modern games at 120hz you can’t go back...) and I use the 120hz desktop LCD panels for everything else (FPS).

It is also prohibitively expensive to setup 3 * 1080p projectors side by side using nthusim software to blend the edges on a curved screen, but it can be done. There is no perfect projector- the faster response time displays lack good color and have average lumens, the great color / black level projectors have slow response times, and for the most part the projectors with decent picture and loads of lumens lack good response times as well (I’m looking at you Epson 5010). The Mits 7800 and Sony HW30 are two current gen projectors that cover all the bases decently but neither have the sub 10ms response times we would prefer. One day we will have 120hz 4k resolution projectors with enough lumens to shine bright in ambient daylight, but until then you just have to try it and see what you like to be honest. Be prepared to play with little to no ambiant lighting for the best picture.
 
Looks amazing, how is the 3d gaming on three monitors, I have had issues with eye strain with one 3d monitor, how does it feel for 3?

Selling my PLP setup for this, are you still using it Vega? Also how do they compare to the BenQ xl2420t in terms of input lag and responsiveness?
 
Hey guys, just want to give mad props to Vega for such a pioneer in the display, this is whats known as a gamechanger :). I recently did 3 x s23a700d + 1 crappy LED, WOW the color reproduction difference. Im running 2 x 7950's @ 925/1400, not enough GPU power yet, but it sure is nice for coding, and with the recent beta AMD driver, its been a very pleasing setup.

You've inspired us all Vega! I wonder how much business samsung and wsgf got from your ideas...

Thanks Vega! I ended up ordering the exact adapters that you linked me, the 3d ones they worked perfectly thank you.

I have yet to grow the pair necessary to take a dremmel to the plastic trim to get it to that 5mm....


@Impulse if you go to vega's channel on youtube theres a description of the components and link to the Stand i believe, but it's the WSGF Edition stand from www.wsgf.com. This stand is awesome, very solid construction.

I have yet to watch movies on it, i would imagine most movies would be in 1080p, why try and watch 1080p on a 1920p. My guess with bezel correction it would be fairly decent, but id rather watch movies on my 42" 1080p, this setup is meant more for gaming i think. Probably just a personal preference though ;)

Closest thing I have found so far that you can get your hands on is a 950. I think it would have to be DP to pull off more than 3.
 
if you looked at my post of my setup, all three of those are 700d's. Which are still available, believe me i would have much rathered 750d's.
