This is an interesting question. My first thought was "nvidia motherboards are notorious for trying to electrocute you if you try to put an ati card in them". Then I remembered that the 3870x2 is supposed to be 'crossfire-on-a-card'. If that means that a standard crossfire driver is needed to utilize a 3870x2 fully, then there may be problems. I don't see nvidia providing any sort of support for a crossfire driver on their motherboards. As Dan_D and most everyone who has owned a 680i mobo (including myself) can tell you, the solution is to just stay the hell away from anything that has the word 'nvidia' on it which isn't a video card.

The early "previews" show the card "acts" like a single card. The ATI driver sees it as one card, not crossfire. So even nvidia boards should be OK.
 
Amd delayed it until Jan 28. A new driver will be out, it will be raping 8800U in the pooper even harder.

I have never owned a single ATI card in my life but I really do hope they pull of a great card in terms of performance, IQ, and pricing.

I'd love to switch to ATI/AMD when the time comes. :)
 
Just like the 7950GX2 the 3870 X2 can be used on any PCIe compliant motherboard. Period, end of story. Since the 7950GX2 and 3870 X2 were both designed to act as a single card they let the drivers handle the Crossfire or SLI support internally within the card and within the driver. So you do not have to have an ATI, Intel or any other specific chipset to make these work.

If you are unfortunate enough to have a NVIDIA 680i SLI motherboard you will still be able to use these cards. You just won't be able to run two of them in Crossfire mode together. Thus you can not have 4 GPUs in Crossfire mode on anything but an Intel or ATI chipset based board.
 
Looks intresting, but having had a pair of 7950GX2's, well driver issues scare me. The problem with this is technology is it will run some games great, and others not so well. I'll wait to see what nVidia has, but until a true SINGLE card solution comes along that is faster across the board, I think I'm sticking with my 8800Ultra.
 
Everyone worries about these multi-GPU cards because anytime they've been done in the past they've sucked, been flaky, not used the second GPU half the time or had any number of other issues.

You'll hear more about it when the reivew hits, but Kyle and I were talking about the 3870 X2's the other day and I even handled one of them (pretty damn heavy cards actually) and he had very encouraging things to say about them.

I'm planning on purchasing a pair of them and an X48 motherboard. I may go ahead and switch to DDR3 ram while I'm at it, but I'm not sold on that last part.
 
hmm I might bring back out my Maximus formula and ditch the 780i board and pick up 2 of these bad boys.
 
while I too am pleased to see these benchmarks for the X2, I am dissapointed in one thing. Are folks overshadowing the fact of it took "2 to beat 1" here by looking at benchmarks? Even if I do buy one or two of these X2 cards, ill only consider ATI to be "back in the game" once they perform equally or near equally 1 on 1. And by 1 on 1 I am referring to non X2 type cards.

I agree. It doesn't matter if there are 14 GPUs on these things as long as they out perform the compeition.

I don't know why everyone cars about single GPU performance. Single card performance yes, single GPU no. I don't think that the 3870 X2 is near the piece of crap the 7950GX2 was.

I am with you on that. That card could be full of fruit salad and I could give a shit less as long as it hauls ass on my 30" monitor.
 
The power requirements and overall efficiency of this card are the most impressive aspects as far as I'm concerned. Less load draw than a 2900xt! :D

Definitely, I'll probably ditch my two 2900XTs for two of these provided they scale well in crossfireX. If not, it might be worth it to ditch them for just one.

This is true, but:

Graphs for no-AA tests can bite me. Likewise graphs for low resolutions.
How old is the card they're comparing it to?
How long is it before the competitor releases another generation?

I'll get excited after it's thrashing a 9800 in an [H] review at high res with AA. Bonus points if it does the same for dual-card configs.

"X2 type cards" are the future of video cards, just like dual/quad core CPUs were the future a year or so ago. You wouldn't buy a single core CPU right now, would you? Get used to it.

Quit restating that fallacy, it's purely bad logic. It's not the same as the CPU multicore progression, as a single GPU is already more parallel than CPU's could ever dream of being right now (128SP's vs 4 cores...)

It's not accurate. You don't just make multi-core GPUs. To assume such is to simultaneously display your lack of knowledge/understanding about CPU vs. GPU architecuture.

Can you show me where a ATI and Nvidia rep state that this is fact ? 'Moores Law' for gpu's is far from over and done with.
 
well, we are pretty certain hat the 700 series is designed to be a scalable multiple chip design.

but i am really not interested in arguing with you, just telling you that GPU transistor counts are expanding too rapidly to keep providing the same performance increases without moving to a dual/quad die solution.

They are supposed to be less than $499.99. Granted if they release in limited supply then there will be some price gouguing on them for a while.
 
i was so tempted to pickup up 2 last night from ewiz as they had 15 in stock around 5pm pst. But i will wait until next week to see the overall results.

I'm not saying it's bad, but you got it the other way around. It was the HD 2900 XT that consumed too much power. It is a power hog and no single chip should've consumed that much.

Kind of a rip. Makes me think I could pick up a used GTX and SLI board for a little more. But who knows, the MSI version will probably be factory overclocked, come with a game, be compatible with their overclocking drivers and still be cheaper than the plain "I don't come with anything except the ASUS premium price jack and a sticker" ASUS version.
