360's Spring update

I can't wait for all of it...especially the Achievement update, where it tells you the achievement you completed w/o having to go and search for it.

16x10 and the audio updates are the biggest for me.

Where do you see 16x10 support? This would be great!!!

I like Marketplace getting its own blade. That keypad is interesting as well.

16x10 would be awesome, my monitor is 1680x1050 or something like that, and though games still look great running at a different resolution, they definatly lack a litttle bit of sharpness from the scaling thats going on.

Is there a list of all the updates that are included anywhere?

Yeah I have a 1440x900 monitor and that would GREAT. Can they even do that and have every game support a 16x10 resolution off the bat or would the game have to be designed for a 16x10 resolution?

This update sounds really good. The whole textpad is a interesting idea. It doesnt even look that bad. Controller still looks like it be comfortable, but it add some weight to it which may make offset the balace. A web browser is definetly coming in a future update with this being said. I wonder if it be IE or a custom made broswer for the 360.

Gotta say, Microsoft is really doing a great job on adding new features to the 360 and listening to its customers.

ya 16x10 support would be great, as my monitor is 16x10 and I would love to see GoW in high def.

As for the patch, I don’t really understand what the big deal about having messenger support is. But it’s nice to see Microsoft add new features.

Some good updates, but still looking for:

1.Option to group members on my friends list!

After about 20 friends it just becomes a big mess of who's who.

2. Individual on/off settings for each notification pop-up!

I don't care about every time my download stops and starts or when everyone of my friends logs off or on. I only want to know when I receive messages, acquire new achievements, or get game invitations.

3. Option to cancel xbl from the console, remove credit card info and view xbl status!

Pretty much better account management all together. I can't even remove an expired CC and it always defaults to it. Plus, I don't want anyone having access to purchase things on xbl with my CC. I am not the only person using my console. It really pisses me off every time I start thinking about it.

4. Option to save Vision Cam pics to hard-drive or memory device.

Why or how this simple feature was not included with the vision cam launch is belong me, and it's long over due.

Did anyone notice this gem?

"H.264 video support: Up to 15 Mbps, Baseline, Main, and High (up to level 4.1) Profiles with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles."

The 360 has its own dedicated scaler chip....a good and a bad thing. It is good because it is relatively straightforward to scale games to whatever resolution you want....they just have to give us the option. The bad is that the scaler chip (ANA) is analog only, which was why there couldn't be an HDMI cable. They redid the scaler (DANA) for digital output in the Elite in order to have the HDMI output.

A couple of people have, however its been limited to MP4/ASF containers and 2 channel sound, which is pretty pointless indeed. I mean how many people are going to bother watching H264 HD content and only listening to 2ch sound?

You maybe able to use WMA 5.1 sound, but im not even sure its possible to mux this into a MP4 container, so that would leave trying to mux H264/WMA into ASF to get anything worthwhile out of it.......and im not sure that is even possible.

Its a start, as the PS3 has a lot better handling of media, however unless they add the ability to support AC3 and other codecs, then its pretty much wasted completely and im sure people will just skip over it and author mini HD-DVD's or something once a consumer level product becomes available (mpeg2 HD-DVD creators are available now)

"H.264 video support: Up to 15 Mbps, Baseline, Main, and High (up to level 4.1) Profiles with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles."

It now reads
* Added H.264 video support: Up to 10 Mbps peak, Baseline, Main, and High profiles with 2 channel AAC LC.

So they have already dropped the bitrate to 10Mbps peak, this is getting more and more like an option people are just not going to be interested in using at all.

I'm most excited about the audio fixes, but that keyboard looks pretty nice. Hopefully it isn't too expensive.

Agreed not worth it imo.

If the 360 had an internet browser, I dont think I would ever turn on my PC....

That, and most of my HD content is in mkv. I wonder if I could get a real-time remuxer to stream it to the 360 or something like that...

That is rather disappointing. Even 720p goes up to around 20 mbit from time to time.

Support for 16:10 aspect ratio monitors would rock. Some of the updates they've mentioned sound pretty cool though.

1280x768 is very, very close to 16:10. I'm not sure why people are crying about a couple of 16 pixel high black bars. Pretty silly, IMHO.

^^Well I think people want 1440x900 and 1680x1050 added to play games at the LCDs native res, and even if there was 1280x800 it still has to get stretched to the abovementioned resolutions.

PC LCDs tend to have better scalers than HDTVs, from my own limited experience with the two. However, I do agree that having a couple VGA resolutions would be nice. I just don't think it's the horror that some people seem to make it out to be.

I'm still waiting for more information on the H.264/MP4 support, as not much has been confirmed beyond a couple of lines in the dashboard update changelog. I would point out, though, that current VC-1 support has much the same problem as the H.264 support - if you go above a certain bitrate, the 360's decoder just can't keep up. I'm hoping they can improve their decoders in future updates, as I tend to agree that 20mbit/s should be the minimum target here.

I might start experimenting with re-encoding some of my raw DVD rips into H.264, though - anyone got a favorite program for doing this? (I guess it's good that I ordered more storage on Sunday!)

Even if we are forced to have black bars when displaying a 16:9 game on a 16:10 monitor I would love a higher res then 720p on my freakin monitor. It wont hurt anyone

I didn't see this posted, skimming back through this thread, so hopefully I'm not blind. Here is a 20+ minute video showing off the Spring Update, which is pretty informative. They don't list off all the features being added, but instead focus on a few things like the Messenger system, the Marketplace Blade, changes to the achievements notification, etc. Check it out!

They also mention the fall update in the video, but don't go into any details. This update is going to make some changes that I have been waiting for, so this is great.

Major Nelson's latest podcast (May 6th 2007) says that the date for the update is not final yet and he'll know more tomorrow. Looks like it may hit on Tuesday when Games for Windows Live is launched.

Or they could just botch it altogether and make us wait all week.

I'll live, whether it's today or next week. The update adds some excellent new features, but nothing that's really going to impact my life that much immediately. I'm still waiting for my Live Anywhere client for my Windows Mobile phone, though. :)

Well today is May 7th so where is the update? I was on Xbox Live and didn't see anything new.

Well i was on IGN earlier this morning and it had the new list of updates for spring. Now i just went back to ign and its gone? did anyone else see the updates? It was had over 125 new improvements and the release date was June 6 or 7. Microsoft must have told them to take it off or sumthin.

The info IGN posted [along with the June 6 date] was for last year's Spring Update. They probably removed the post when they noticed the error.

wow..lotsa good stuff on that list but the only 2 things that really lifted my skirt were
background downloading while playing a game
full usb keyboard support

People over at the Gamespot forums are saying if you call MS they will tell you May 8th 3:00AM PST... but then again it is the Gamespot forums.

There is a list on xbox.com, listing off the various features. It says the download will be available beginning the week of May 7, so it doesn't have to be today, though hopefully it does show up late tonight. If not, no big deal, as I can wait as well.

I'm looking forward to some of the listed changes/updates though.
