290/290x availability thread

I found a couple 290s, but they don't effin' take paypal... Have another place to check tomorrow.. But they charge tax!

I waited my month for my 290 DD, which randomly showed up today in stock after being pushed back by about a month. As far as I'm concerned Newegg, can kiss my fucking ass and I honestly don't care if you give me an infraction for saying so.

Thanks for sharing... . Jackass......

/jk

Hahaha, well, if I could convert my paypal, and get my (2), I'd share for sure!

Does anyone know if it's possible to use paypal to buy a prepaid visa/mc, to then go use at a place that doesn't accept paypal? My situation is this: I used my work ebay account to sell a bunch of stereo equipment. Now, I have taken all the payments, and they're in my work paypal account. I feel that sending myself money from my own paypal account would be bad news bears.. So, I figure I would just spend it from there...

I got one on fleabay, it was $569 when I bought it but the think they are $615 now. Its the Sapphire Tri-X 290 and it came with a Sapphire R7 250. There were a few combo deals from the same seller imicros so if you're desperate for one its actually looking like a pretty good deal.

When it crashes, people keep saying it's gonna hurt AMD. It'll hurt Nvidia too, since there will likely be an influx of AMD cards on the market for cheap. No one wins if that happens.

It aint crashing anytime soon... By the time it does, the cards will have depreciated anyway.

Looks like Newegg has comes to their senses and lowered prices somewhat. Some 290X's in stock now for $699.99 instead of $800-$900.

Didn't happen for the 6950/7950 generations.

I'm just glad I picked up my XFX R9 290 Double D Black Edition for $480. dunno how amazon sold it to me for that, had to wait 3 weeks for it, but dammit I have it.

The people that want to buy the cards for their original intended purpose will be the winners when it crashes and prices drop to where they should be. I don't think that AMD will be hurt by it because they've already sold every card/gpu they can produce due to the fad, Nvidia has also benefited by not having to drop their prices like they would have as well as selling extra cards to those that couldn't find an AMD card or didn't want to pay the inflated prices. There's probably a fair amount of people that have also held off on buying a new card until prices become more reasonable. The only way I see anyone losing due to a crash(other than the speculators) is if AMD significantly ramps up production right before a crash but since they rely on a 3rd party fab I don't see that happening.

I have seen that card, the Tri-X and MSI gaming all for under $480 I want to say $469/79 but with tax it was actually cheaper ordering from BLT....

How are your VRM temps with the DD, especially VRM1?

Hopefully, like Soda said, the crash will happen long after the cards have lost their luster.

I'm still forlornly waiting for my Feb 1'st order of 290X @ $579 to go through Amazon. Looks like I could be waiting about forever.

I'm just speculating, but going by the fact, that this all started around the 2nd week after Black Friday, all it has done is get worse. Now we are waiting a month or more for a card, unless you really like paying Newegg's gouge. I mean the market can crash but another form of coin will just take its place, its already happened with Bitcoin.

I can't see prices on 290x's going past $700... actually at this point, they're about even with a GTX 780 in terms of price/performance for scrypt mining purposes (aka anything LTC-based). There is around a 35% performance difference, and that's a 33% difference in price. So anything above $700 and the GTX 780 is becoming a better value even for mining.

Also there are some coins with different algorithms out now where the performance gap between NV and AMD is even smaller

Supply and demand. People aren't paying $800 anymore. They simply aren't worth that amount.

Newegg operates no differently then Korean eBay sellers anymore. They jack the price up to keep the place holder, when they have more stock it goes down.

A new shipment came in this week and viola.

only reason they are now at 699 is because they are reference coolers, once they get more AIB cards back in stock watch the prices rise again.

I used to be jealous of US access to NewEgg. But this last three months has shown how rapacious/gouging they can be.

Local stores (Australia) are triple whammied -- Goods and Services Tax, the exchange rate, and the shipping costs. Prices for R9 290's were $500 for the reference cards, but that's gradually increased over the months.

Scorptec: (Generally quite expensive, not many discounts, ever)
R9 290: $AU539 for reference, $589 for non-reference
R9 290X: $AU679 for reference, $AU809 for Asus DirectCU II 290x

UMART:
R9 290: $AU535 for reference, $599 for non-reference 290
R9 290X: $AU645 for reference, $AU761 for Sapphire Tricool 290X

$AU1.00 = $US0.90, so each item is about 12.5% cheaper in US dollars, since the GST is included in those prices.

Still stinks. Just not quite as bad as NewEgg stinks.

Got two XFX DD R9 290's from Amazon for $499 each. Not bad for a much better cooler. Shipped today :D

For those getting by with a R9 270/270X for now the Gigabyte GV-R927OC-2GD Radeon R9 270 is available for $190 at Fry's. Only difference is the GPU clock but you should be able to over drive it from 950MHz to 1050MHz 270X level according to comments on Newegg.

Ridiculous Fry's is playing this markup game. Price jumped from $190 to $250 in one week.

Some outlets get these through distributors I think FRY's is one of those that do. FRY's also is not a big AMD seller, they are more latched to Nvidia for what ever reason.

But tell me, if you have a 9800GX2 (as you do in your sig) and you wanted to buy a new video card and on craigslist and ebay they are going for $2500 would you price yours at $150. No difference. I understand the frustration. I have it also but, if someone is willing to pay more then they get it. Ever been to an auction? Ever been to a grocery store and seen the same iten at one store for a different price at another store? FRY's will price match ANY valid online price IF they have it is stock. This is simple economics at work. Noe of us are complaining if the price is below MSRP though, right? Value of an object is what someone is willing to pay for it, NOT MSRP. MSRP is a profit target only based on a lot of different things. When the environment changes the MSRP may not be valid. Case in point, Tell me what is the MSRP of gasoline?

(No I am not affiliated with FRY's)

Good thought, but most people do not think that way once they are locked into the thought that AMD cards are better for mining. Right now the only cards available from Newegg are reference cards at $599 & $699. which means someone bought the $899.99 cards without thinking of the price/performance equation.

I have two 290x on order from amazon at 580 a piece, which is a great deal

The 290x doesn't require cross bridge which is big for me, I've been waiting for this a long time, and I've never had driver problems with either brands, but amd cards have always lasted long and been able to take more heat and wear before they quit

Neither of the 290's require a bridge anymore.

How many did they have in-stock, though?

After that date, the price went up to $899.99. So the quantity does not matter. They had a buyer at that price. The market price after the 12th of Feb. was $899.99 and someone was willing to purchase it at that price.

This and the fact that 28nm is getting old now:( 20nm please:)

The 290's were suppose to be on 20nm but the process was not ready when AMD was. That is also why we have the high heat envelope. When Pirate Islands is done on 20nm we will see a drop in that 94 degrees along with performance gains.

That is why I am wavering between accepting the second 290 and the 2 290X's I have on order OR just waiting for the new cards to come out and pouncing on a couple of them day 1.
