hello everyone,

im new here and i must say this forum is probably the best ive seen for displays. well to the point

out of the 2005 and 2405, which one would be the better choice for gaming, TV and PC'ing overall? is the 2405Fpw superior in everyway? somebody with pros and cons for both would be excellent. also, i heard that the 2405 has component video, is this better than the composite in the 2005? thanks again all!

EDIT: also i have read about the screen resolution being hard on graphics cards, is this true? i have a 6600GT agp and i want to play HL2, far cry etc good. i also have a PS2 and want to play that too, is it better on the 2405FPW? i will upgrade to a PS3 in the future, and i hear thatll have HD connections or something. thanks again!

2005fpw is bang for the buck(unless these deals come back)

the 2405fpw is starting to drop, it also has a memory card reader on the side

I think the 2405fpw has high def connections, and the 2005fpw has the standard yellow connector

I struggled with that question and settled on the 2005 fpw simply because it offers a lower native resolution which would be more friendly for gaming. The 1920x1200 resolution of the 2405 demands SLI to get your moneys worth out of it in modern games. I also considered the 2001 fp but its contrast ratio wasn't as good as the 2005 fp.

I own both the 2405FPW and the 2005FPW. IMHO the 2405FPW is the better monitor of the two. The colors are richer - the 2005 has more muted tones.

But it all depends on what you want to use the monitors for. Working close to the 2405 can get a bit distracting as the surface area of the monitor is so huge. In this respect the 2005 is perfect, there's not much eye movement involved.

For movies the 2405 wins hands down. 'nuff said. :)

For games - you had better own a SLI kit or a nice graphics card like the GeForce 7800GTX. My X800XL whines like a dog pushed too hard. Or else you have to surrender eye candy like AA & AF. Remember too that modern games will now incorporate technologies such as HDR that really punish the GPU. Very few cards can handle 1920x1200 with eye candy, you can safely forget the 6600GT unless you like playing FarCry/HL2 in slideshow mode :) For that matter 1680x1050 would be pushing the 6600GT too hard as well

Component video is superior to Composite. But it depends on how you plan to get 720p or 1080i TV signals to the 2405.

And remember, watching DVD's and Divx/Xvid on the 2005/2405 is going to be boring ( Try watching a 128x128 movie fullscreen on your current monitor and you will know what I mean ) unless you use a filter like ffdshow with upscaling or a h/w upscaler for MPEG-2. That takes CPU power for s/w only solutions. And the more the resolution, the greater the cpu load. On the 2005, my 2.2 GHz Athlon 3500+ goes up to 100% cpu load with a DivX movie and lanscoz filter scaling at 1680x1050.

So which one to buy ? Well I bought the 2005 first for 430 GBP. Then I got a good offer for the 2405 - two for 1,000 GBP, so it came to 500 GBP each. That was a bargain. But would I buy the 2405 at it's current price ? Probably not unless I was into watching movies more than working on the monitor...

But now that I use the 2405 more - I really feel the need for that 7800GTX :) :)

woah thanks for the replies,

well i my gpu and overall system isnt that old, so i wont be upgrading anytime soon, especcially if im buying a monitor. in games, i never use AA or AF, cause i think games like Half life 2 and Far Cry and Doom 3 look beautiful as it is :p

well the overall use for the monitor is goin to be gaming, playstation 2/3 and Tv, although gaming more than the other two. i will use it to surf the web, word documents, music..... its my computer, so im using the screen for everything basically :p

i also rote a topic on it in neowin.net but i always like to get a 2nd opinion, especially a good 'display' forum like this. http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=340425&st=0

however to summarise:

i want a widescreen monitor that can play games close to what my 19" hitachi CM771 Crt can now. i also want to watch the occasional DVD on my computer. i also wish to play the PS2 on my computer, or through the screen to be exact. i want a pretty good picture and i want to be future proof for the PS3.

now ive been reading about the screen resolution and im leaning more to the 2005FPW again, but will that affect performance of the PS2/3 seeing as the monitor does not have Component inputs?

my current specs are

P4 2.8ghz w/HT
1gb Kingston ddr
packard bell motherboard- that i want to change
80gig maxtor
24-bit Sound blaster 5.1
belkin 54g wireless card
gigabyte nvidia 6600GT AGP
Fdd
dual layer dvd burner

thanks again!

i have just thought after reading another thread, if i was to change the resolution for the 2405FPW, to that of the 2005FPW 1680 x 1050, or to normal 1280 x 768, would the games look good aswell, while not putting too much stress on the video card?

It would be a non-native resolution. What that means is if you were to run both the 2405 (non-native) at 1680X1050 and the 2005 (native) at 1680x1050, the 2005 would look quite a bit better.

would it look a lot better? its like i want the 2 monitors in one cause of connections, stress on gpu etc :p is there a similar sized monitor/tv that would work good with my current ...erm....requirements? (doesnt matter the price)

I went with the 2005FPW (and love it by the way) because of the unbeatable price, also for the fact that I can actually afford two of them. I plan to buy another 2005FPW in the coming weeks when the price drop comes by again. I would've gone for the 2405FPW, but I prefer two 20.1" monitors over one 24" monitor. In my opinion you get more for your money. And plus, multi-tasking should be great. You could have iTunes on one monitor and have your Web browsing on the other. That's just my 2 cents however. Everyone is different, just pick what you think is best for you.

thanks for the reply, but im not sure which is best for me

2005FPW - for its smaller resolution adequate for games and my graphics card

2405FPW - for its bigger screen and more connections at the back for playstation 2

however i might just gt the 2005FPW, if it supports connection for a playstation 3 next year?

2405 doesnt have hdmi but it does support 1080p, graphics will be clear and unscaled.

The 2005fpw has the following inputs: S-Video, Composite, VGA, and DVI. The PS3 will probably only support component or HDMI outputs. I would be surprised if it supports DVI or VGA, but there may be component or HDMI to VGA or DVI adaptors out there...

You can just lower the res to 1680x1080 in games on the 2405FPW if that's a concern. You really won't notice the difference.

they wont look that bad? just abit worse than the 2005FPW, i guess, but still good. Since i dnt play with AA and Trillinear AF, then hopefully all will be good :p

i say definatly go for the 2405, i have one and love it. The 2005 has backlight issues, some color issues and overall just isnt a good monitor. You really do get what you pay for with the 2005. I wouldnt be too worried about the high res either, with new console games and what not going into hd im sure we will see more and more video cards that are able to handle hi def res and widescreen gaming coming soon. Even now most video cards will look pretty good on a 2405 even though its not native.

Colors look great on my 2005 and though they do suffer from backlight issues, the one I have is very minimal. The 2405 is a nice display but the high native resolution is its achilles heel. No matter what people say downscaling to non-native resolutions results in a blurred picture even in games. If you guys go look at Anandtechs newest GPU article for Battlefield 2 you can clearly see that at 1920x1200ish resolutions with AA/AF enabled the only video solution are 7800s in SLI. This monitor will constantly demand top of the line gaming cards so you will be upgrading more often even if you normally would not do so -- in the end it makes the 2405 the rich mans toy.

even with scaling it will look great as long as you do something near 1680x1050 or whatever it is.

argh this is frusturating   :p

well im goin to keep the 6600 gt for at least another year, year and a half. so u guys think i should get the 2005FPW, i cannot afford to upgrade my computer components as other enthusiastic gamers do, however this monitor i want to get is a replacement for and ancient CRT, so i hope it will stay with me for like another 5 years, and be my moneys worth. i have heard from friends that these monitors native resolutions are very high, therefore very demanding during games.

1) i never use AA or AF
2) keeping the 6600GT for a while to come
3) want to play games like FEAR and Stalker, although ive heard benchmarks that prove these games will be way demanding for like 6800Ultras at 1680 reso

so is it worth to get a 2005FPW, cause i think i have no luck with the 2405, or should i just stay with my CRT?

Yes but the 2005fpw has the vertical real estate of a 17". The 2405fpw a 20".

But the problem remains no matter how many 2005's you line up in a row. Granted the multiple monitor setup is really great for certain multiple app needs. But for general usage the vertical limitation is noticable after a while. But it really depends.

i would guess that getting a good functioning 2005fpw would be like finding a needle in a haystack. If you dont mind a possibility of a dead pixel or more and the definitive possibiity of backlight leakage then you wont have any issues with teh 2005fpw. The image quality isnt quite bad and its a pretty acceptable display minus those few problems. Personally i couldnt deal with it, even though it is way cheap i prefer some quality. You should even look into the apple displays, they lowered the prices a while agao and are pretty reasonable now for the 20 inch.

ahh why does technology change so fast :p.

but seriously, why were these monitors only made for gaming with a top-of -the range GPU, maybe cause they werent made for just gaming but for another 231920423094 things :p . i dunno, i think i might just save up for a new PC in 2 years, then get a next-generation Dell monitor then, i dunno  ill think it over

Vertically this 2005 fp looks about the same height as my 21" Sony G520 CRT so I don't mind at all. I think anything larger would be distracting on the eyes especially if you are a gamer.

The screen has exactly the same vertical dimensions as my 19" Viewsonic 10.5 in, except that the 10.5 in. on my 2005 is all viewable. To the OP, if you would really like to connect a ps3 then go with the 2405 or a large CRT display. You may be able to find a sony 24 inch widescreen CRT (gdm fw900) for 500-800, that way you dont have to worry about resolutions.

i have both the 2005 and i just got my 2405 20 min ago .. and the 2405 ROCKS .. its taller and all around awesome .. :D

Yeah but as your sig says, you have an SLI system in the works. The OP only has a 6600 GT and doesn't plan to upgrade anytime soon.

I agree with you.. I decided on the 2005FPW, and am now on my 4th replacement, as the first 3 had bad backlighting issues.. This one doesnt have those, but is suffering from about 7 dead pixels, that I've found.. Prolly gonna call and yell at Dell somemore tomorrow to get this one replaced.. Overall, I LOVE the monitor.. It's just too bad, for some, not all, that you may not get the quality you expect.. Maybe I have bad luck, as 4 friends have bought the same monitor and had no problems at all..

hmmm so what do u guys think

6600GT + no upgrade soon + no AA/AF + 2405 at native reolution = laggy/sh*tty/crappy gaming?

i mean, i want to play at least stalker, FEAR, and fe of the new releases ccomming out on this current system, but i have a feeling that this monitor will f*** it all up.... cause of my rig

Actually, verticaly it's the same as a 19inch CRT. I checked.

If you're buying a 2405 you should be able to scrounge together the cash for an used 6800Ultra or something... ;)

well thats the thing, i dont have anymore cash apart from the monitor....... my next system will be PCI-E, and ive heard ppl saying that the 6600GT runs good without AA or AF, and if it doesnt, downing the resolution does...

i was suffering with this debate also. I went with 2 2005fpw's. They are amazing on my aiw x8008xt. I have one vertical and one horizontal. I love this setup because for web pages, most designed for 1024x768, the horz on the monitor is 1050 and instead of 768 down, i have 1650. You can see so much more. I love it. For games and movies i have the horizontal one. I picked these up a month a go for $350 each and i had one issue with dead pixels, but dell was awsome about a replacement.

i would recomend a 2005fpw or 2 over the 2405fpw

  (when i looked at the thread which compared them both)

the 2405 makes the 2005 look like a pipsqueek.

the resoultion trouble i think has settled, cause i can play games good with the screen stretched at 1024x768 without too much loss in quality, and i would prefer all the connections the 2405 has for future proofing with the playstation 3 and high definiton television, however one new worry has come up (sorry guys :p). the 2405 being a PVA panel, apparently is pretty bad for First Person Shooters or fast games in general, and im a 90% FPS, 10% every other game guy. with the 2005FPW, the screen is a S-IPS panel and that kills the 2405fpw ikn first person shooters (apparently) however i really want conformation in the sense of digital photo pictures, or videos :D for anyone with both screens, do u think u could capture a video of each playin say, half life 2, then post it on yousendit.com so i can make up my mind :p:p however if not then i understand why

2405 is evil.

I had no desire to upgrade at all before I bought my 2405, then I bought new RAM and HD, next I'm gonna spend more than 1500 to upgrade to top end again, I can run games at 1920x1200 fine with my current setup, but fine is not enough now. Oh well. :D

Haha good luck man. I just got a 7800 GTX and it still isn't "good enough" for my needs at native resolution for the 2005 fp :) I want a constant 60+ fps in Battlefield 2 with all eye candy and that just does not happen. Guess my next step will be another 7800 so I can SLI :D

:D LOL, whats ur current specs atm? anywas the 2405FPW apparently is going to go down to $1000 US approximately at middle of the month, shoul i get it, or go for the $610 2005FPW that is on sale at the same time? :D :D

Well if you do the math it has the vertical resolution of a 17" (not the physical height-the pixel hieght, or resolution). It's off by about 2 pixels. A 19" is off by about 8 or 9 pixels. If you put a 17" side by side windows scroll evenly across (a very slight error at the bottom).
If you where to mate a 19" it would be off by a much greater degree.

How do I know this? as I have two 17" Dells flush up against the 2005fpw on both sides. Three monitors. This arrangment with the widescreen in the middle and the rather narrow physical gap of the Dell's (I have two 1704fpv's) works very well and It cost me about the same as a single 2405fpw ($375+$220x2).

But this entire spread has only the vertical resolution of a 17" (off by 2 pixels). So it's limited in it's own way (but sure looks cool)

The 19" doesn't mate (pixel flush) with any larger widescreen.
The 20" may mate with the 2405, I haven't calculated this though.

This bit of info is actually rather imprortant so I would strongly suggest we get it straightened out (however we do it).

The reason being is that a 17" is a great way to add a dual screen with the 2005fpw. If someone where to try a 19" the results would be less than stellar. You want to be able to have a window opened evenly across the gap .

BTW: one good thing about the 2005fpw is it works very well with the neoflex with the arm extension. I imagine the 2405fpw would also work with the extension (I will try it probaly) but it looks like it might be pushing it.

I've owned both at one time. Honestly, I can't use the 2405FPW for gaming. It's... I can't believe I'm saying this... Too big.

I'd say do some research and get a good deal on the 2405FPW, if you got the cash for 2405, no need to get the 2005. Unfortunately I'm not a great shopper since I always pay more than others when it comes to buying stuff so I can't give you any tips on gettng a great deal.

My specs:
P4 3.0C 800mhz FSB w/ HT
ASUS P4C800 Deluxe
2GB Corsair XMS DDR 400 Platinum
ATI X800 XT PE
SB Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
WD Raptor 74GB 10k RPM
Memorex DVD
550w Enermax PS
Dell 2405FPW

Going to:
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (or an X2 4400+, not decided yet.)
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium
BFG 7800 GTX (getting another one at the end of summer and go SLI)
Antec TruePower 550w PCI-E and SLI ready.
Another Raptor 74GB or Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300GB for storage
Lian-Li V2100 or something can't remember
some other media device dual-layer DVD burner etc etc etc.

Giving my current rig to girlfriend, she's running on an Athlon XP 2200+ now, going to put her current rig in the guest room for friends, woot!

I just bought a 2005 and I am not happy with the real estate at all. I just got rid of a 17" CRT and that seemed bigger than this. I wouldnt mind the 2001 but im not in the market for a 2405 yet.
