Any idea when are they supposed to come out ?

hardforummarc

I'm building a new gaming rig right now and I need to know what I want as a display.
From what I hear, 120Hz TN and 60Hz IPS both have their Pro and Con.....Making it hard to make a decision...

Any of you know when are the new gen Display are coming ? Are we talking about IPS 120Hz only or is there anything else to be released soon ? OLED (just heard of it..)

My #1 priority is to have the most beautiful and smooth 2D visual gaming experience possible.. (no competitive gaming or such, it that can be a factor of decision).
I see as many peoples swearing by the 120Hz as for the 60Hz IPS ... this is getting confusing..

The rig will be for gaming only.

CPU: i7 2600K
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7970 CF
Hard Drive: SSD SATA3 160GB
Pw supply: Corsair HX1050
Memory: 8 GB (2x4) DDR3 1600 MHz
Mobo: ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3
OS: win 7 64-bit

Not anytime soon, man.

I'm waiting right there with you. :)

I do not think that it will happen any time soon. 120Hz VA panels will most likely arrive before IPS.

Ok thanks guys,
That seal the deal for me. I won't wait anymore. Thanks
But then I'm back to Level 1.... 120Hz or IPS .... damn ..

Is there any suitable 120Hz that look as good as IPS in term of IQ ?

none of the current 120hz panels are going to compare to an IPS for IQ based on what i've seen.

Damn... now that's some ridiculous downside on both technology....
It's whether you get bad image quality OR not so smooth image...

wow..

A next gen PLS? I thought I heard something about a new Samsung coming out later this year.

pls isn't going to be 120hz any time soon. Its very similar to ips, so probably in the same boat as ips

I think were gonna start seeing OLED panels with high refresh rates before IPS gets any more love. There is no market for a 120hz IPS honestly. Think about all those Photoshop pros using top end IPS monitors to stare at a static photo that needs no refresh rate at all.

for now you just have to get an ips for regular display and the 120hz for gaming

If a 120hz IPS panel comes out it will likely be 60hz with motion interpolation, use Passive 3D (540p garbage) and use LG's grainy matte coating (garbage).

Wait for Samsung to do it right with PLS.

There are already passive 3D IPS panels
Some IPS monitors may support 75Hz which in my opinion is pretty good compromise.

When it comes to coating, it is rather personal thing what you find annoying. I do not really think that it is annoying. Glossy screen would be way more annoying.

It is not personal preference if you don't want a glossy IPS (of which there are only 2), it is something you have to deal with. There is a reason CRT's, TV's and most monitors don't use the junk LG puts on their panels.

The only passive 3D IPS I am aware of are the Mitsubishi's which are only available in Asia as far as I know.

I hope the rumoured 120hz VA 3D panels come out soon since IPS/PLS=extreme glow fests when used with high brightness required for 3D

I recently compared a couple IPS LED panels vs non IPS LED panels and the image quality seemed the same to me. Color reproduction and such looked the same, the key difference to me ... my eyes feel so relaxed looking at the IPS panel while looking at the other it causes strain over time.

my friend told me this as well...I've been using IPS for awhile...so I kinda forgot how TN is...and I dont recall any experience with strained eyes...but my friend who just recently switched from TN to IPS, said the IPS does not strain his eyes after about 2 hours of use

I just read that HDMI can only run 60Hz at 1920x1080p ? .. then why in the hell would I want to buy a HDMI 120Hz 1920x1080p display just to have it run at 60Hz only ??? o_O.... *confused

i thought the newest HDMI does 120hz at 1080p/1200p?

or did i hear wrong from somebody? lol

No HDMI version can do 1080P@120Hz. DVI-D, Display-port or bust.

You shouldn't use HDMI as a PC > monitor connection. Most HDMI hardware won't do greater than 1080p and none of them support 120hz. My GTX 580s wont do anything higher than1920 with HDMI. Have to use DP or DVI for 2560x1600.

Without exception PC > monitor should be DVI-D or displayport, with displayport being the absolute best. HDMI is for big screen TVs, not computers.

There was an article on here not too far back from some Swedish company or something saying that they were in the works for 2012. As to whether any of this is true, or just speculation, I have no idea. I'd like to see it personally because thus far, if you are a gamer at least, you have to weigh 120hz vs IPS color/resolution, which sucks. Everyone would love to have both, I'm sure. 27" IPS with 1440p reso and 120hz. Yes please. I can't imagine the cost though, as both 120hz and IPS have their price premiums. Combined I can see us looking at 1500 bucks for a friggin computer monitor.

Thanks xoleras, I was absolutely clueless on that.
Now excuse my lack of knowledge but.. what componant of my new rig do I have to check to make sure it will be Display Port-ready ? is it the GPU and monitor alone ? Mobo ? Case ?
Any other requirement from other componant to make all this DP monitor work properly on 120Hz ?

BTW. I will be running a 7970 GPU... does this support Display port ?
Thanks

just your GPU - make sure it has DP or mini-DP out. if it's nvidia, probably won't have either. You can tell I did not read your last snetence ;) You should be fine with 7970

I'll go for a 120Hz...

now what would be a good 120Hz Display that has whether a DVI-D dual link or DP connector , is glossy and has good IQ ?

I have a 24 inch 120hz gaming monitor and a $3000 116 inch projector connected to my computer. Epic solution.
