Hey ValeX, I'm sure there's an option in the LCD OSD somewhere. By the way, post your impressions of the L204WT, since its out this week @ CC I'm sure there will be a lot of users interested.

Do L204WT got that feature? (scaling for black bars)
Are you Really sure, since Im not sure if I should wait for this monitor or not (not released in Sweden yet, where Im located...) and Im probably going to buy x1900xt so the "driver-way" for black bars are not an option....
Or is it? Anyone knows a way to use black bars with ATI-card with a WS-monitor without scaling feature?

In the ATI CCC there should be a "Digital Panel Properties" section, in it select "Use Centered Timings". this should work, but I have not personally tried it.

i did not see an option to do that in the monitor osd.

But I do use an nvidia card, and just clicked the no-scaling/1:1 opition, so when a game loads thats 4:3, it just outputs 4:3
or 5:4

with black bars

You might want to choose "Display Adaptor Scaling w/ Fixed Aspect Ratio" and see how that looks for you. This will scale the image up until it hits the top and bottom of the screen while keeping the correct aspect ratio for the resolution your game is running at. That way you won't wind up with black bars on the top and bottom of the screen too.

can the Nvidia card scaling be done with any Nvidia card? I am buying a 7950 and the monitor I am getting does not support this on its own, any help would be greatly appreciated

ATI centered timings works if the monitor itself is not broken.

For instance I used 1600x1200 on my Dell 2405 and got black bars on the side. Apparently if you do this with ATI/centered on a Dell 2407, you get stretched image out to 1920. Some native resolutions stretch on the 2407. This broken functionality.

Nvidia drivers go one step further apparently and will put out there own black bars. That is if you select 1600x1200 with one of the settings it will actually send 1920x1200 to the monitor which includes generated black bars. This keeps screwy monitors from stretching the image to fill the screen.

So if you have a screwy screen and an ATI card you get a screwy response to some 4:3 resolutions.

Back from the store, installed the new cord. Now the "use centered timings" option is available, so I turned it on....NOT FIXED. EEEK 50 friggin dollars and it did nothing? I _must_ be doing something wrong. Is it possible that my LG L204WT monitor is just lacking in that area? God I hope not, I want to play Starcraft without it stretching!!! Please guys, what am I doing wrong? All I need are some nice big black bars on the sides!

ValeX

edit: just tried COD2 with a slightly lower res, and it does indeed get stuffed into a box in the center of the screen....Hmmm, why not starcraft then?

edit 2: Looks like COD2 will only scale it in 1440x900 res, nothing else....Im so confused right now.

what driver version are you using?

You might try uninstalling your drivers and then reinstalling them or the latest Catalysts.

Some games can use widescreen modes by editing the config files.
I havent got COD2 installed to check but I'm sure someone will have.

This does not work with ATi drivers. The drivers output a smaller screen, but most LCD's just scale it to full instead of just centering it.

The reason nVidia drivers do work, is that the display is still at the same resolution, but the drivers add the black bars to it to make it centered instead of relying on the monitor, which most don't have the function, to center it.

Give this thread a read:
Does Ati even know how to get a centered 1:1 display on DVI LCD monitors? over at Rage3d.

Sorry to see you waste your money on a DVI cable, I got mine for free with my LCD and I like not having to adjust my LCD at all. I wouldn't consider it a waste.

I guess I'll just have to wait for ATI to update the functionality of this feature....*large exhausting sigh*

Exactly. Just don't hold your breath!

I just wonder why more lcds don't offer proper scaling. Luckily, I got a 2007wfp and it scales perfectly.

i agree that any monitor that is $250 should have this as a standard, it would help sell more widescreens for sure
