There's a hole in my 3930k?

From what I understand it's there from the manufacturing process when they slap the heatspreader on there so the glue or whatever can cure/harden, been that way ever since the early P4's

Fairly certain my core i7-920 didn't have a hole.

Other than that I've been all AMD, and no holes there either..


I'm just concerned what might happen if capacitative/conductive paste were to get in there.

Umm I've never had a CPU with a hole in it, and I've had a LOT of cpus since the early P4's. I don't have a 3930/3960 which does apparently though.

CPU's have had holes in them like that for years. My Pentium 4 S478 had one. I think even my Core 2 duo had one, although that I don't recall. The I7's dont. And no, it doesn't go all the way down, either. Stop worrying.

It's an emergency vent...

Now clean that crap off the top! It envokes my OCD...

It came that way in the package (which was a sealed retail box btw.)

I scrubbed the shit out of it with increasing intensity using 91% isopropyl alcohol and it still wouldn't come off.

I can only assume it's in the material itself, maybe even a poor polish or some sort of scuff on the heat spreader.

I seem to be getting good temps though, so I'm thinking its only cosmetic and not functional.

It's been on several CPU's in the past, most notably those from the P4 era.

It is normal, and yes, you can get thermal paste in there without issue. Certain kinds of paste are electrically conductive, and if Intel thought this would be an issue, they would print gigantic warning labels for the boxes and we enthusiasts would have heard about it on the net by now.
 
Someone asked what is behind cover, the die is WAY smaller than the entire CPU or that metal cover on it. To get better image how it looks, remember the PGA370 and Socket A CPUs, those were made without this cover.

Yep, That's one of the reasons I asked this question.

Most of my system building is from back in the exposed chip days. I have much less experience with these newfangled heat spreader thingies.
 
It's for the chain, when in 2 years you make a keychain out of it.;)
