Did dual 22" monitors and I prefer working on my 27" for now. No real need for dual monitors.
WAMP stack and VMs for cross "browser" testing and my IDE changes depending on the language but it's usually PHP Storm or Sublime Text, neither of which is pretty heavy. But I don't restart my machine...
Oh, forgot to mention: I'm hoping to run this as quiet as possible, so anything else I should take into consideration would be great to know. Thanks again. My last build you guys helped me with went awesome :)
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
- Web development
- Some light photo editing and Illustrator work
- The usual movies/browsing/chatting/etc...
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Budget isn't set in stone but lets try and keep...
Thanks for all the advice so far, I've got most parts picked out now except for the HSF.
What would be the quietest cooler that I could push a 2600k past 4ghz on air?
Awesome, thanks for the recommendations. I think I'm going to be grabbing the Fractal R3 case, it looks amazing and sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. Also I can get it from ++++ locally for $115 :)
Any recommendations on a HSF? What type of PSU will I need to power this thing? will a...
What's up guys, been a while since my last build and my current machine is about to be tossed into the living room as a media center PC once I've got this build going. But it's been a while since I've been aware of new hardware tech and want to build a desktop that will last me another 3-4...
Simple question really I suppose. I'm going to be connecting to my landlord's access point in the same house and need a PCI card. I WAS using a wrt54g v2 as a wireless bridge but it was highly unreliable. (I'm getting it RMA'd through Linksys for a v4 though :D).
My landlord is nice enough that...
I do game occasionally, just not very often. and the cheapest passively cooled Vid Card I could find was $80, so I figured I might as well pay $30 for a card that can run some sick games :)
Is it really that much better? I definitely would prefer quieter but the reviews I saw put them...
Just did a little window shopping at directcanada.com and they seem to have a good reseller rating and some great prices (as well as free shipping ;) )
Here's what I got up to.

Hey Guys, thanks again for all the help you've given some great advice. it looks like I'll be building this soon, I had to put it on hold because of school work piling up. So here's what I'm looking at right now. I'm still fairly clueless on the video card though.
(in case anyone asks, I'm...
Short Answer: Yes
Long Answer: Back up your stuff and worry less. I had a similar drive 7200.9 200GB (3.5" disk) and it started clicking from time to time and died maybe 4 months later. So yeah.... back up and run a disk check or two.
Ever see Dell's 20" "laptop"? ;)
My assumption (and yes,I know all the dangers of assuming) is that the OP wants something 15.4" or smaller. Right now I'm looking for something 14.1 or smaller cause my 15.4 is a bit chunky to keep hauling to and fro. I've been looking here (avadirect) and the...
No worries I'm used to the teasing. I'm still waiting for NewEgg to ship to Canada, they ship to Alaska for gods sake
Anyways, like I said I'm cool with paying a bit extra for certain parts if it's likely worth it. couple bucks more for a way quieter heatsink? I'm down, I was...
Though I'd like to avoid spending too much money I tend to favor spending a bit more where it's worth it.
I have no problems overclocking, though noise is a concern if extra cooling would be needed by the C2Ds.
My old system was a Athlon XP 2500+, Asus A7n8X, 1GB DDR400, AGP Radeon9500 pro, a...
Hey there guysI
Haven't been on here for a while so I think I've gotten [S]oft. I'm looking to upgrade my old rig cause it seems to be on its last legs. But being that it's an old Athlon XP I'm thinking that a completely new build (w/ some carryover) would cost just as much and be a better...
Good to hear you resolved the issue. Another solution is to go to Tools > Options > Content > Manage File Types
and you can specify to instead run Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader (my preference) instead of opening either in the browser. This solved my girlfriend's recent Acrobat struggles.

I don't have a Mac but may be purchasing one soon and saw this thread. This is hillarious but if spotlight is as good as they say wouldn't it be able to find even the most hidden of files or can you specify a folder not be included in its searches?
As others have said if you're looking at getting into Linux then LFS is definitely not the way you want to go. I'd go with Ubuntu or Suse or if you want that extra 1337 feeling you can go with Debian, it's a bit rougher around the edges (a bit)... I've had a lot of luck with Ubuntu and I've...
Ubuntu recognized my widescreen laptop fine and put it to it's native res of 1920x1200 but when I mentioned before about XGL/Compiz I didn't say it was hard, I just meant good luck getting it working without using the command line
No worries.
Afterwards, you can always install one or the other and then add XFCE to a Kubuntu install or add KDE to an XFCE install through synaptic or apt-get, the installing application.
Good luck with the linux install, I made the switch and it was pretty smooth. the only hard part was...
Patch uxtheme.dll with the NeoWin Multipatcher and then go to a site like Customize.org (has TONS of themes) or InterfaceLIFT.com (not many but the ones on here are quality) to get some themes.
Just put them in C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\%themename%\.
have fun skinning.
Yeah, KDE, Gnome and XFCE are all different desktop environments which just means GUI and some installed programs. Most of the installed programs will be the same Firefox, OpenOffice and so on but some programs may be different depending on the environment you chose.
For computers with lower...
What is this server going to be doing? Just acting as a router or serving Apache or acting as a NAS or something else?
If it's just going to be acting as a router you could check out ClarkConnect or SmoothWall (both of those links go to reviews of these distros on skullbox.net which is fairly...
My experience with switching to Linux on the desktop was that everything worked out of the box no problem and even customizing some things and changing looks and themes and adding programs can all be done without touching the command line.
However, there are some things that MAY require you to...
Well for starters Wikipedia has some good info Compiz Wiki
and there's always Compiz.net
but be warned, it's all in beta and can be a bit tricky to get it running. I had it working buggily at first, then changed to the vanilla packages and it worked great and then did an apt-get upgrade...
When we're talking windows:
Notepad2 (surprised no one mentioned this yet!)
FireFox + Mouse Gestures + AdBlock
Thunderbird
Nod32
FooBar 2000
WinSCP (best SFTP or SCP Client, I just wish they'd add regular FTP support.)
MSN Messenger (As hideous as the interface can be at times I just...
I'd say the 1GB is overkill but I guess it depends on what you're doing with it. As a P3 it'd be cool for playing movies and stuff on a TV. What are you actually planning on using it for.
Suse is cool but if you like Debian or Ubuntu then hey that's cool too. They're essentially the same...
Ok, my brother is a journalist student and is on a co-op in Beijing, China. He has a blog on Blogger and would like to be able to update it from his place there as well as access several other sites that require logons.
I was wondering if there are any anonymizer programs or something he'd be...
if you're running XP you can just use windows movie maker. Sure it's buggy and will crash from time to time but it's easy to use and I'll be damned if WMV isn't pretty good compression.
Peace, here's to hoping I won't be flamed ;)
I'll put up another vote for foobar. it's fast, leight weight and has greeat functionality. My only gripe is how painful it is to try and skin it or add mods. it reminds me a whole lot of Miranda in that regard ;)
Peace
I believe you can find hacked firmwares for most DVD drives out there to make them region free. but what I did when I bought a DVD for my mom off eBay from the uk was just burn rip and burn it region free onto a DVD-R.
