I'm not sure if that will really help me here. I can R/L composite out of the xbox with what Demon10000 suggested, but I don't have a way of getting the audio to the speakers without feeding it through the microphone jack on my pc

It usually is nothing. I'm going to try leaving a torrent on 24/7 with the speed capped. If it is due to idling, that should fix it

Right. I learned my lesson the first time I held the button. Reconfiguring all of your forwarded ports sucks. I do torrent some, but its never when I'm torrenting that I get problems. The router will generally cut out when it isn't being used, which means a trip to the basement to reset it.

It wouldn't be practical. The house is two stories, plus the basement, so I think I would end up spending more on CAT6 then I would on the extender.
