How much power do these things use?

Yes, because airflow prevents the temperature from rising much. You need to look at your power bill and see the billing structure and what billing tier you're on. PG&E charges as much as 40c/kWh for major power hogs to discourage conspicuous consumption. At the national average of...

Seagate Baraccuda click of death... important data

Actually, it may just be firmware. ST#####AS made in 2008. It's a Barracuda 7200.11. After doing some web search, this model apparently had a serious issues with firmware failure causing the drive to become totally inaccessible. I never dropped it or knocked it over. Was working just fine...

Seagate Baraccuda click of death... important data

It was working just fine until last night. I realized I couldn't access my drive today, so I rebooted the system and still no go. When I plug the external drive in, it would spin up, then it would click several times and the spindle turns off. Computer does not recognize the drive at all...

PSU - coil noise: can be induced?

Where do you live? Many European countries require power factor correction as per IEC1000-3-2. It can either be passive or active type. Passive type uses large steel core reactors in harmonic filtration process and they make audible noise at line frequency. If you're in one of those countries...

    psu not drawing any power?

Double check the board manual for the location of motherboard power-button header and PSU connections. If it still doesn't work, you may have a board-PSU "power good" signal timing incompatibility. My older Gigabyte 7DXR and an Antec EarthWatts won't power up at all with EarthWatts 500W...

so yeah.. this is my "Genuine" HP adapter from newmp3technology.com

So, many users were not convinced it is not a counterfeit. I just found out for sure that is is definitely counterfeit. It was returned to HP for authentication and I'm told it's definitely a fake.

HP responded. They believe it is counterfeit based on the same pictures I submitted them. The Corporate Security office in Houston, TX, USA responded: "From the pictures attached, it does appear that the product you purchased is counterfeit. We have had reports of some counterfeit power...

so yeah.. this is my "Genuine" HP adapter from newmp3technology.com

Do you have close up pics of guts of known genuine adapters that came with a new computer and not as an accessory on eBay or some website? And somehow skip an input RFI reduction choke? Many of the SMT components are not even lined up correctly and some are even noticeably floating. I've...

so yeah.. this is my "Genuine" HP adapter from newmp3technology.com

Could a genuine HP have soldering quality that bad? There was a whisker of wire sticking out output cord where it enters the holes at circuit board. There are huge blobs of solder on the board and signs of component legs being trimmed by hand using hand tools.

I lost one of my adapters (had one for home, one for taking it to places and stayed in my bag) and I bought one online, from a vendor called www.newmp3technology.com Update: August 2010: From the way it looked inside and out, I believed it is counterfeit. It was sent to HP for...

How do I selectively block certain .sol cookies from being set into Flash?

It's the same idea as P3 serial # based identification. iesnare is a software based tracking that generates a key based on your hardware configuration allowing its subscribers to identify and compare you against their database. I blocked iesnare in Firefox. I can erase the .sol cookies they...

11,19V on the +12V rail - Is this too low ?

No it won't. They both go back to the rail. Unloaded molex connector will provide voltage at the rail. If you measure at the ATX connector, that includes voltage drop in the connector and wires. Remember that on-board sensing is downstream of the connector. If you were to measure the...

    Modular or not?

There is no doubt that compared to hard wiring, added connectors add resistance to path, which maybe compensated by heavier wires. Just how much depends on the specs of the connector and durability. (i.e. SATA internal connectors vs eSATA connector. Latter is expected to have MUCH more...

    110-240v surge protector?

Actually, I believe UL listing is void too if it is used for outside of intended purpose, i.e. your typical power cord won't explode if you were to hook it up to 600v, but it would not be UL compliant if it was used at 600v. NEC often mandates the use of CSA/UL rated components and while...

11,19V on the +12V rail - Is this too low ?

Measure by sticking the probes into the motherboard 24 or 20 pin connector under load. Molex with nothing attached to it only sees voltage at the power supply's rail. Falling out of ATX specs can happen if the wire from PSU to connector is too thin for the length.

Need a PSU with long cables, for an Antec p193

Cut and splice. I only had 5 molex connectors on my 250W Antec PSU, but needed another connector for the video card. I cut one of the two floppy connectors off, then I spliced in a string of three molex connectors I cut off from a Ultra brand PSU.

    Good UPS Brands?

The newer plastic case UPSs are similar in my opinion. The general trend is that newer UPSs have smaller battery capacity per VA capacity, so it might look powerful at the store, but have an absurdly low run time. Big numbers sell and batteries are expensive to make and expensive to ship...

    110-240v surge protector?

As far as the error I was referring to 420v that was shown on Provantage link. That product does seem very strange. I can't say I've ever heard of anything like that as feeding 240v to a normal, NEMA-15R 120v outlet is like asking for a disaster should a normal 120v appliance get plugged...

    110-240v surge protector?

Unfortunately, surge protector is line voltage specific. A 120v rated surge protector is rated to clamp (basically shorting over voltage to ground) at 210v peak (normal 120v line is peak). A surge protector rated for 120v will burst into a flame if connected to a 240v source. The clamping...

    Way to monitor GPU utilization?

ATI Diamond Stealth x1550, what good is it for?

I got an ATI x1550 sold as Diamond Stealth 512MB AGP for my older desktop. It has H.264 decoding capacity, but apparently hardware acceleration of H.264 videos in Flash platform is not supported with the new Flash 10.1 I mainly use Flash based contents and don't play FPS games. So, what...

WiFi loses connection and I have to change channels

Questions about UPS and electricity bills

It's inconsequential. The power usage of UPS is not dependent on load. It's a fixed parasitic loss unless you happen to have a double conversion UPS, which the APC SmartUPS is not. After a certain point, runtime vs load becomes non-linear. i.e. you might get 20 minutes at 60% load, but...

Questions about UPS and electricity bills

When you make the parasitic losses, it's important that you let the battery charge overnight, not until just 100% is read. After battery depletion, battery will continue to charge long after "100%" indication is read. This has to do with the way charging is done with lead acid batteries...
