Hey All, I have a need for building a rig from scratch for some ML modeling work. Last time I built a rig was 2020 (for gaming, not ML) so I'm excited about this but also don't have a clue of what I need. Here is what I have on my mind:
In the process of grabbing a Threadripper 3970X with...
Just want to say thanks to everyone on the post. The upgrade had a few hitches, but it went through successfully. I outlined below the issues if anyone runs into this thread:
- The BIOS upgrade instructions on gigabyte website are crap. But if you are using windows, this tool should work...
Thanks. That link is super helpful but I have Gaming 3 - I'm hoping the compatibility list is still the same. Good tip on the BIOS update. I'm gonna find a 3rd Gen Ryzen now. Super helpful.
Hi All, I currently have a Ryzen 5 1600. I'm hoping for a processor upgrade and I am not really in the mood for upgrading the motherboard at the moment. What's the best upgrade I can do here? I don't really need the latest and greatest. Just something that makes sense. I am a little confused by...
Thanks, yeah I guess I should have mentioned that I was looking for something under $100. Otherwise it just feels like a bit of an overkill rather than just using an old laptop with screen off (i.e. headless) like LukeTbk suggested.
Hi, I am looking for a solution that is low power (sort of like raspberry pi 4), can run Ubuntu, and can play 4k videos using mplayer or such. Here's what I have ruled out:
nVidia Jetson Nano: This is what I currently have. It meets all the specs on paper, but support is extremely poor and...
Sold
Hi,
Selling my quest - probably has about 1ish hour of use as I never got around to it. Pretty much like new - charger etc.. never unpacked. Comes with original box and all the accessories. Not trying to turn a profit here - this is just what I paid for it and realized I don't need it...
whateverer
So I got the Jetson nano, and trying to use it now.
However, my fears about small computers other than Pi are slowly coming true. It is definitely a great powerful little thing - but support is really poor and things are broeken everywhere it seems.
Installed Jetpack 4.2, and...
whateverer Thanks, that's awesome detail!
Reading more into this, it seems Jetpack supports Ubuntu - which is pretty critial to success (some kind of debian support). But are the binaries built for this architechture? Can I just do "sudo apt-get install xxx" or do I need to compile the...
Interesting view - I looked at the Jetson nano, and I am wondering how the support and power draw is.
My use case for Pi is basically to just attach a couple of cheap portable HDDs and use as a 24/7 online backup server with something like owncloud. Benefit of Pi is that raspbian is mature, and...
Indeed, there is likely an appropriate external reference to most questions.
My post was more to foster a discussion around what the good people [H] thinks is coming next for Pi, and possibly other small computers. Someone always has some interesting point of view on future direction of these...

I mean the function of performance and price. So, I agree that topline graphic cards will always be around a sweet spot price point that works for nVidia.
However, if not for AMD - I'm not sure for that price the computing power today would be anywhere near what we have in today's cards. So in...
Wow, I mean that's a monster price for a card. At that price point and from what's available out there - I guess it's mostly about the joy of tinkering and having the fastest card rather than a discernible different in framerates.
That is, I suppose also a function of how games are designed. As graphic power increases newer games will be harder to play on older cards - with or without an upgrade to 4k monitors (which is likely also coming). So the need for more computing is ever growing - what keeps the prices in check is...
Even if AMD could profitably make it at that price point, why do that? They have no guarentee that the price cut will help them with long term market dominance. It might just start a price war and guess who had a bigger warchest. Worse still, people will still blindly buy nivida.
What has the impact been of pricing on nividia sales? That's going to determine if pricing comes down - do they feel like they might lose marketshare because of pricing?
Oh, I don't disagree with you that they are perhaps charging more for premium than the worth when you scale what it costs to make it vs cheap. Companies, Tesla being the latest example on car, often just make the premium version and software disable feature for the basic version.
I think every...
Well, somewhere along the line those margins translate into lower prices and more innovation. It's the same as airplane seats I think. Everyone complains about the crammed space. But if it weren't for the crammed spaces the fares would be higher and you'd be traveling to your loved ones...
Yea, I've been using it with 16 for a few days now, and things seem fine. I can always add another two 8G sticks if the need arises - I don't think it will be soon though.
Thanks everyone for the breakdown, especially bobzdar for details. It seems the best usecases for VR at the moment is gaming - which is cool! I think I might need to get myself one ;)
Wa.. I had this mouse and it was with me forever. I remember it. I use a 703 now, but that's because I absolutely need something wireless (which can be wired when needed :) )
I buy motherboards based on a simple caculation - is the extra money, if spent in some other component, going to give me more or less performace. The same goes for all components. More often than not, for the things I do - a cheaper motherboard and spending more on ram, cpu and gpu turns out to...
