Cyberpunk 2077

It's a weird game because some elements of it now look like a million bucks (lighting/shadows), but other elements (animations) look multiple generations old. I tried to go back to it 6 months ago and got bored pretty quickly. I liked it on my first playthrough, but I found replaying it to be a little bit of a slog. "I don't feel like doing this again" was my sentiment for the first 4-5 missions, so I bailed.

I'm always down for new free content. I'm on my third play as a Corpo that I've been needing to finish for some time. Guess I'll do that after the update.

I want to play Phantom Liberty after I upgrade my monitor to OLED hopefully by early 2027.

I replayed part of it just to see the AI datacenter area & story for Phantom Liberty. Definitely worth it & I'm more than willing to keep playing if there's new content on my 2nd playthrough.

HDR does make the color palate a bit more realistic. OLED PC monitors have low max brightness so it is mostly about contrast and better color palette rather than massive gains in brightness. You can run the HDR part on a good VA panel and get fairly close to the image quality of an OLED, even if the contrast and dark colors will be slightly worse.

The big deal about OLED is the lack of pixel blur. Running a 3rd gen QD-OLED isn't night and day compared to what was a high end VA monitor 5 years ago, outside of motion clarity, when both are calibrated as well as possible. The OLED has a bit better contrast and the colors pop a bit more etc. but the difference is less than between a mid-range and high-end VA panel. The main difference is in how clear objects look when they are moving fast across the screen etc. as the pixels change instantly instead of having a bit of delay.

"We're talking cyberware customization, a new dual-wielding playstyle, and more!" I hope that "More" is really doing a lot of heavy lifting because, as neat as some new cyberware tweaks or dual wielding may be, where I think what the game really needs is A) new in depth story content both touching on 'old' and elements and/or B) mods capable of letting the community make it themselves if CDPR has no interest or ability to do so currently.

The game lacks, and could really benefit from, the kind of modding tools that allow players to extend the world in a Fallout / Elder Scrolls Bethesda style game, which have seemingly been denied because REDEngine is "difficult" to work with ; a supposed rationale why they haven't wanted to meaningfully add to the game since Phantom Liberty (itself truncated in several ways) and the plans for the future sequel to be on Unreal Engine instead...for better or worse. If this is the case, I'd rather have them put the effort in to making mod tools so that u players of vested interest can change and add to the game as they see fit even should it prove more tedious or difficult to do , rather than it not be available at all if CDPR doesn't want to put forth the time and resources to make it officially.

Cyberpunk 2077 | Edgerunners 2 Update Features Overview

With this update, the game will receive support for DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and is also going to upgrade its already-supported Multi Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, and Super Resolution integrations to second-generation AI models...

Hopefully the industry will stop sucking Epic's dick and stop glazing Unreal Engine by then.

If they can create better engines then they should do that. But most of the time the alternatives are quite bad. It seems like every other game has some type of stuttering problem now days, a game that runs smooth without the occasional stutter is more of an exception. Remedy's engine in Alan Wake 2 works quite well, as does Space Marine 2's engine though the latest update for that introduced some notable stuttering in my experience. The earlier builds of SM2 were practically flawless. TLOUS engine work quite well. Ubisoft games run okay, but have quite inconsistent frame rates and seemingly very low minimums that makes them look jittery. Dunia has been their smoothest engine and I am disappointed to learn the next Far Cry is moving to the same engine used in Avatar and Star Wars Outlaws, which has the crazy spiking minimums and maximums.

But UE5 and UE6 are not going away anytime soon, so we better hope the newest builds deliver on better PSO implementation or other things to reduce stutter.

It's also just cost. A modern game engine is a hell of a thing to make so you need a lot of talented programmers who are working just on the engine, not even really on the game, if you are going to roll your own. No surprise then that many companies decide it is cheaper to just license UE (or something else).

While I don't love how everything is becoming a UE fest, I get it. I mean look at Red Engine: That shit has had a LOT of trouble. It isn't like it is some paragon of design with great performance, no bugs, no stutters, and so on. It has its issues and that is after a LOT of fixing. Cyberpunk was in a bad state when it came out.

Also the reason so many things are going UE is that there aren't a lot of other engines out there being licensed that are any good. For awhile it looked like Unity was making some real strides but then they got real stupid with licensing and updates, and it has really seen a huge drop off in interest. I don't know if iD licenses out iDTech anymore and it never had the reputation of being easy to develop for. Gamebryo went bust.

Hopefully the industry will stop sucking Epic's dick and stop glazing Unreal Engine by then.

Funny AF seeing people complain about UE in a Cyberpunk 2077 thread. It was probably the worst launch in history due to terrible performance. Memory of a goldfish.

The issues at launch aren't directly an issue of the Red engine not being good enough though. The launch issues came down to the game being largely unfinished. Things like the game's implementation being rudimentary and incomplete were down to the priorities of the developer and ultimately CDPR pushing the game out before it was ready. It took another two years post launch to create the game it should have been from the start.

Oh it wasn't the engine's fault for terrible performance, they just didn't use it right? You could say that about every single UE5 game with poor performance. Because there are actual real games made in UE5 that never had performance issues.

Well, the engine wasn't really designed for a game like Cyberpunk 2077. So additions and changes needed to be made to it which obviously work pretty well now. The main issue is that the game wasn't complete when it was released so all the work put into it since release, hadn't been done yet. Red Engine as I understand it isn't the easiest thing to work with, and CDPR only has themselves to support it. The main reason they are moving to UE5 is because its supported by Epic and most industry veterans are familiar with it. CDPR didn't retain the talent who know how to work with Red Engine, making it difficult to train new people on it. It's a tale as old as the industry when talking about in-house engines. Switching to an industry standard engine that everyone uses, has its advantages.

The main problem with UE5 isn't UE5, its the studios that don't properly implement it. As you pointed out, there are UE5 games that run well and work properly. I think its mostly Western studios that can't seem to get it right. This is because the talent pools they employ aren't there because they are talented.

I didn't get into anime, but like cyberpunk. Is it worth watching edge runners?
I disliked the first season. I couldn't stand the main female protagonist or the main male protagonist. Both were painful to watch for various reasons. Another major issue I have is that all the better characters rarely seem like they get enough screen time to shine. Or perhaps, I felt cheated by the constant focus on the two worst characters when I'd rather have watched anyone else. That said, I recognize the fact that I seem to be in the minority regarding my dislike of the series so far.

I haven't watched the series yet but I'm curious whether you saw the dubbed or original JP voice cast. I typically can't stand English voices for anime.
English. I don't buy the whole "Japanese is better argument" in a lot of cases. Hell there are cases to be made for quite the opposite with a few shows. I've watched plenty of anime in both versions, much of the time the female Japanese VA's annoy the shit out of me. The pitch, overreactions and the fact that most of them sound basically the same. Not to mention, many Japanese voice actors in general have a tendency to fucking yell all their lines and overreact to everything. In Edge Runners case, I don't think it matters as the characters annoy the shit out of me on a more basic level. She is toxic as fuck and not remotely likable. He simps for her and it makes me want to throw up. They seem to have kind of a co-dependency thing going on too.

In many cases for older anime the JP VO is far superior. English dubs usually sound dull and monotone like they are not taking it seriously. But with Edgerunners the English is actually be better than the JP dub in my opinion.

If you thought that about the first season then definitely don't watch the second. It is literally this dialed up to 11.

It is hard to tell who are you supposed to root for, as every main character is toxic or plain evil, except for Roman, but he is just a kid, observing the events basically, not an active participant.
Even the nomad girl who dresses as a bum who seemed likeable at first later shows toxic signs. I have no clue what was her name.

And I liked the first season, it was edgy (pun intended) but fun, but I think this takes the edginess too far. I'm not saying I hated it, I just hated the characters, if that makes sense. I still feel like it was worth watching.

I've played the new misson "Clampdown"

I hated it. Whoever designed this does not understand immersive sims. The whole mission leads you around on a leash, you have absolutely no choice and you are forced into head on confrontations. If you don't have the right build for the mission it is impossible to finish on higher difficulty.

They even take away your freaking gear, so if your character is specialized to something else than the tools they provide it becomes an exercise in frustration. And as chance would have it in my current playthrough I specd for stealth throwing knives and tech skills. And then they give you a revolver, don't allow for stealth, and you don't get back your gear until the very end of the mission.

And the narrative is shit too. After the mission your only options are to praise the people who put you into the position you find yourself in with zero forewarning. No, fuck that, I was so mad I wished I could've hunted them all down, and give them all a really gruesome death.

I really hope the narrative / gameplay designer of this mission is barred from ever working on "Orion" in any capacity.

You have to keep in mind adding content to the game at this point is an after thought. Expecting top notch content this far from launch is not realistic.

It's not that it's half hearted, clearly a lot of effort went into this, it's the direction that I take issue with.

More greedy publishers would charge $30 for this as a DLC.

Oh, and BTW, IDK what they did but after the 2.5 update the game looks significantly better than before.

It does support DLSS 4.5 and the Transformer 2 model.

Welcome to the new "modern" CDPR. That mission is likely the type of lazy, unimaginative content we are going to see from them moving forward.

How do we start this mission? Guess I need to play it but sounds a bit annoying honestly. I don't mind linear games but if you build your game around choice and a play style and then take that away, it is very annoying. Either build something from the ground up for a very specific style or let us use our tools how we see fit.

I've been forcing DLSS 4.5 RR since it released as well as DLSS 5 Nerual Rendering preset 1. It looks amazing.

I decided not to update the game for this update. I've got a bunch of mods installed that would stop working otherwise. From the sound of it, I probably wouldn't like it anyway as I'm a stealth hacker and have no interest in dual wielding or forced action sequences. The anime was ok but overhyped and a bit of a let down in my opinion. I don't really care about the new Edgerunners 2 at all.

You have to have completed the heist done 2 jobs for Wakako, and have at least 15 street cred for the mission to start. Recommend doing it with a solo / tank character, as sneaking or picking enemies off from a distance is completely off the table

I don't mind linear either, Phantom Liberty had some linear missions as well, but you were never forced into situations where your build handicapped you. You always had options to avoid fighting or do it your way.
