I did buy a 3960x in the next 60 days :p

Yeah I tried to change that but it would not let me...

If I were to use a time machine and go back to edit it, it'd read, "Which processor did you buy in the last 60 days or, are you buying in the next 60 days?"

That's kinda difficult to fit in the poll question since I'm still operating on ~3hrs sleep this week...

No worries, I was just giving you a mild ribbing. :p

There will be a purchase in the immediate future. Battling on 3600 or 3700x though

MC has the 3600 for $169 right now. So tempting

For those of you wanting "Other Ryzen"...or "Other Intel" I understand. However, Other CPU's weren't "launched" in November 2019. These 6 processors were. I'm trying to gauge the amount purchased of each of these 6 since their Nov launch dates...

I'm not buying for at least another 3-6 months, but by then I'm hoping Ryzen 4000 will be out, and they have the same massive discounts they did on the 2700x on Zen 2 release (prices have already fallen by $30 since launch). That and the release of the B550 chipset wouldbe fantastic.

3700x should be plenty for the next five years, and double the number of cores on my 4790k.

Fair point, but it's still what people would most likely be cross-shopping with the newly released ones. Like, say they were waiting for benchmarks/pricing of the new stuff before deciding on whether to get it or the mainstream parts from a few months ago.

Considering the popularity of each choice, I think an accurate poll would offer those.

Considering I don't care about CPUs other than these 6 I'm fine with the accuracy.

Edited: Seems only 3 of the 6 are actually available based on the voting so far

2700x on a very good black friday deal, the prices up here in canada on the newest stuff is still very high.

Paired with a 1070ti its been a nice little combo for me

It's a good CPU. Currently using one in my other system and I've never had a complaint about it.

Put together 3600x backbone a little over a week ago..

ZERO complaints.

Just went with a Ryzen 9 3900x.

I was actually still very happy with the performance I was getting from my 5820k @ 4.5Ghz, and wanted to wait another year or two to let the Zen2 hype settle a bit and see what Intel could put out in response. Unfortunately I've had an occasional freezing/lockup (no BSOD) issue that I've been trying to resolve for over a year now, and even made several threads about it during that time. It's gotten to the point where I've eliminated everything other than the CPU or Motherboard as a potential source of the problem. I've literally swapped out every other part during the course of my diagnostics. It might be a CPU degradation issue caused by the high voltage I tended to use while overclocking, particularly during the first year or two after I got the 5820k. Or it might just be that my EVGA X99 board is terrible - which would correspond well with all the other corners they cut, such as most of the 4-pin fan connectors on the board only offering voltage fan control rather than PWM, etc.

I have serious doubts that the Ryzen 9 3900x will even be much of an upgrade for me over the 5820k @ 4.5Ghz, particularly for the type of gaming that I do which is not very multi-threaded. Even with the games that I play which are well multi-threaded, it's not like I was hurting before with only 6 cores. I just decided to finally cut my losses and move on. The 3900x seemed like an easy choice at this point, and this is the first time I've run AMD in my main system since I ran an Athlon Thunderbird 1.4 @ 1.6Ghz almost 20 years ago.

Hey Grebuloner where'd you get your 10980XE and how much you pay for it? What kinda build you have planned? You doing a build log for it? Fill us in! You don't post much so I hope the new build changes that. :)

Well, hello, notarat! I'm a rather introverted lurker of sorts, so I'm always around, just don't always feel like I should be posting something. :)

I've been slowly buying up parts for my build to minimize the hit to the ol' wallet, though I was hoping to have everything by now. A lot of what I need (or want) just isn't available, like the 10980s. I'd have one if I could find one from a reputable non-gouging seller. The listing was removed from Newegg before even being in stock, doesn't show up on Amazon, and B&H has it as "coming soon" with a hefty markup (more than I was hoping to pay tax included, but still less than shady fleabay listings) and will be a last resort. If there's anywhere else that might have it even close to $1k, I'm listening.

I just found Optane drives for sale (those are disappearing, too) and ordered a 480GB 900p AIC for my main drive.

Aside from gaming, my main use will be photo editing, math stuff (for which AVX512 and the CLX unified L2/L3 cache will be very useful), and occasional DVD/BD authoring. I'm looking forward to a BD conversion that won't take all night. Also, when not doing anything else, Primegrid is my squeeze. It loves the Intel CPUs (and AVX512), but not the AMDs (a 32 TR achieves best performance as 8x4c chunks due to separated CCX L3s, the Intel as one 18c unit and being first matters).

The build plans as they exist today:
i9 10980XE
Asus Prime X299-A II, Gigabyte X299X Aorus Master or MSI Creator - haven't seen much in the way of reviews, so I'm kinda holding off until the 10980 is available before deciding.
4x16GB G.Skill DDR4-3600C16 - have this
Reusing my 1080ti and 16:10 monitors
Optane 900p 480GB AIC - OS/Programs/Docs
NVMe m.2 1-2TB of some kind - Games, local file storage
Seasonic Prime Platinum 1000 - bought OklahomaWolf's review unit during his retirement fire sale.
Enthoo Luxe 2 - I guess it's the 719 now, whatever that means, but I got it when it was released under the better name.
Sound card or DAC. Might get a PCI->PCIe adapter and reuse my Xonar D2 or Claro II, I've really enjoyed their sound, or find something new. Perhaps external 7.1 3.5mm/RCA DACs exist?
10Gb is on the distant horizon to add, going along with wiring the house for cat 6/8, my current system doesn't even pull more than 300Mb from the file server when doing conversions, but maybe this one might be able to make good use of it.

Cooling-wise, I intend to put together my first custom watercooling loop for the CPU with a 480mm radiator, then up the clocks on the CPU. I expect I'll be opening a thread in that section later to make sure I get it all done right. To start I'll just slap a spare Noctua D15 on it at stock until everything is ready.

I'll try and remember to post pics when the time comes. Reminds me that I also need to do a log this spring when I mod a mailbox for my pfsense router.

Sounds like a helluva build! Look forward to reading the log on that one! Don't be like me and have a potato-quality camera....and don't take too much time to think about it like I do or you'll change your build (like I just did not 60 minutes after posting a pic of it, LOL)

Thanks! I like to think so :). I want my systems to last for a very long time, even when they're retired to unattended crunchers (as my current system will become), so I go big. The only waffling I'll do is over the MB, but that shouldn't be too bad. I'm leaning towards the Gigabyte already.

I'll make sure to bust out the D800 for the pics, just for you (y)

ShopBLT has EIGHTY-THREE Threadripper 3960X's in stock for only a modest mark-up ($1443.26)
