No Man's Sky - a procedurally generated sand box space exploration game

I will say that the grind in this game is far less now. Getting technology is way faster generally as getting Nanites is super easy as you get it from discovery fairly rapidly.

What about ship costs / mining resource prices / amount of resources you can hold? To me that was always the tedious grind - trying to mine enough crap to upgrade a ship that cost a fortune for marginal upgrades, and that's if you could even find a better ship to buy depending on RNG.

Haven't played since a month after release. Just started new as well with a buddy, looks decent so far, but wow! The repair cost on the wrecked ships. That's gonna take some time...

So this game is wrecking my Titan Xp in regards to temperature. Having to crank the fan speed on the AIO to max just to keep it in the 50's, if I dont it shoots into the high 60's, no other game or benchmark does that. Anyone else getting crazy GPU temps with this update?

Hmm nope not at all. I am staying between 67-70 while playing on my 1080 GTX clocked at 2000/11000. Remember the Titan Xp heatsink was always not the greatest to keep temps under control.

Usually I am between 92-100 GPU usage as well since I play with framerate Uncapped. Maybe you can cap your framerate? I know that would help keep temps down?

I would think with Titan Xp in SLI your GPU usage would be low since you would more than likely be CPU bound....Interesting.

I'm actually on water cooling with NZXT's GPU bracket and a 120mm aio on each card. I am at 3440x1440 res though so maybe thats whats putting the load on the card. The game doesnt support SLI unfortunately.

Wow crazy!!!! Well this game is pretty taxing if you turn everything up. But yea that is pretty high on Hybrid cooling....Damn no SLI support either, I guess Nvidia would need to add in profiles since it runs on Opengl.

I guess this game is just super taxing, I know it taxes my 1080, so I guess that just has to be it?

Btw what kind of frame rates are you getting? I usually run at max settings with Motion blur off, and TAA+FXAA on.

same settings as you at 3440x1440 on a Titan Xp @ 2000 core, 12000 mem. Frame rate usually around 70 to 80. I was just shocked at how much heat it was generating.

NMS is the most taxing game I have. I have an i7-4790K, GTX1080, and I play in 4K. I usually have a nearby window open to pull cooler air into the case.

Well, I managed to get my base back, no thanks to HG. Turns out the buildable computer terminal for bases doesn't seem to work, it requires locating a habitable base and claiming it, and then there is a "restore base" option. It does drop the old base right on the spot. I also started getting S-class module upgrades for my stuff. My saves, BOTH OF THEM, have a bug where every time I save the game, I lose *all* fauna and flora discoveries, which has persisted over the last few months and is still in 1.5. This means the quick nanite cluster boost by uploading discoveries is much harder for me. ; ;

I'm only playing my Normal mode save for now. My Survival mode save is in 1.38 mothballs until I am sure I want to fire it up. Hopefully they will fix the weird ship replacements.

Pretty cool on GOG's part, I must say.

Although Hello Games chose not to offer refunds over missing game content to our users and instead promised to bring the missing multiplayer content later this year, we understand that some of you might not be willing to wait. For this reason, entirely at GOG's own cost, we’re offering an extended refund policy for all owners of No Man’s Sky. Even if your purchase is no longer covered by the 30-Day Money Back Guarantee, you can contact our customer support team and we’ll issue a refund in wallet funds.

Finally bit on this btw. I have to say, after all the hate it got - the game is a lot of fun now. Has it ever occurred to anyone that this game is basically just Starbound with good graphics? Which I'm totally fine with.

It runs like a dream for me thus far, no overheating and I'm also running a Titan Xp. Wonder if it's a driver issue? I'm currently 1 behind the latest NV drivers.

I can see myself putting 100 hours into the game exploring, gathering resources and crafting / upgrading ship, tools, etc. It's not the most robust game in terms of having an actual storyline to follow with quests etc. but there's more than enough to do to get your $25 dollars worth if you got it during the sale. Would recommend at that price 100%.

It's on sale for $29.99 (50% off) on steam, so I bit.

I actually already have it, but it's a cheap $5 stand-alone version I bought from some software company on a whim. It will not do multi and I suspect it may not even get this upgrade.

Whatever. I'm good to go now :)

Two hours disappeared last night. I think this game finally won me over.

I said this the last time they sold this game like this:

$30 should be the new MSRP. Not $60. That's not realistic. I think that would go a long ways from here on out for them IMO.

I'm loving the tree density improvement...

Is that a ring? Finally?!
I'm waiting for it to DL still. Shitty net lol.

Interesting though it was 6.5Gb initially. Now says 6.1. That's about the same size as the game was on launch for anyone wondering.
Editl Seems it tacked another 1.2Gb additional path on too, which is common for Hellogames, a follow-up 'ooops we missed that' patch. It's not always so easy to replicate for testing with all the variables for them.
They literally write 'probe' drones to go and visit planets at random and report back what they are like, so they can test changes to the universe generation code etc.

A couple of the big streamers on twitch streaming this right now for anyone who wants to see what the update is like.

Yeah got lucky and had a planet with a ring around it in my starting system.

Man I found some supreme scanner enhancement thats give me like 7000% units when analyzing floura or animals? I mean is that broken or I got super lucky? I have played maybe 2 hours overall and I am already over 130k units LOL

Exploring is actually a really easy way to make money/nanites now.

It's normal, but they did move those sorts of things closer to new players. Previously the same boosts were offered via blueprints that required uncommon materials to make. If they are trying to get back to that, then the max would be about 58K per flora and anywhere from 80-300K for fauna with the exception of special rare fauna worth millions.

O wow so there is super rare shit to analyze eh? My god...even more to do now!

Tips for playing No Man's Sky's big update

I still haven't fired it up since the update, but I've been following all of your posts. I might have to jump in tonight. I have a few dozen hours in a save, but I'll likely start fresh.

And yeah, NMS was pretty taxing for me as well. 6700K/32GB/1080Ti running at 4K. The game always ran very well but man would it cause the fans on my 115i AIO to ramp up. I've replaced the stockers with quieter Corsair mag-lev fans since I last played, so hoping for more silent exploration now. It might be a bit less realistic now, as before I could pretend that the loud whooshing was just my starship thruster(s). Didn't work as well when walking around on foot, though. :p

Is the game stuttering an unavoidable fact of life or can it be made smoother? Although I've had NMS since release, I've never made it off the starting planet because the inconsistent framerate - or the appearance of such - gives me a headache. Is it too much to expect 100-120 FPS at 2560x1080 with an 8700k and 1070?

NEXT Update 1.51
No Man's Sky - Hello Games

Hello everyone,

Thanks so much to everyone who has already spent time playing NEXT and letting us know about any issues you've experienced (and a special thanks to those who have opted in to the Experimental branch to help us verify fixes early). It's overwhelming to watch thousands of players begin or continue their journey across the universe.

We have now released update 1.51, which includes the fixes detailed below.

Bug fixes
  • Fixed an issue where players who saved after partially repairing some items of technology would be unable to load that savegame. Please note that if the game has not been resaved, then progress has not been lost and will be recovered.
  • Fixed a crash caused by memory corruption
  • Fixed a crash in the animation system
  • Fixed a crash when saving on a freighter
  • Fixed a crash when fleet expeditions end without their capital ship present
  • Fixed a number of memory leaks
  • Fixed an issue where warping in multiplayer could cause players to spawn on a planet rather than in space
  • Fixed an issue where freighter bases would be in the wrong position
  • Fixed an issue where the build menu could crash if there was nothing available to build
  • Fixed an issue where players would be unable to warp during the antimatter stage of the tutorial
  • Fixed an issue where the mission destination would be incorrectly reported as in another system at the Hermetic Seal phase of the tutorial
  • Fixed an issue where upgrade modules installed in the main Exosuit inventory would not be saved correctly.
  • Fixed an issue where portable refiners placed near each other would share inventories
  • Fixed an issue where the cockpit of some ships would continually open and close
  • Fixed an issue where new controls were missing from the controls page
  • Fixed a crash in creature routines
  • Fixed a crash when multiple players put ammunition into a refiner
  • Fix for occasional crash when receiving mission rewards
  • Fix for crash when adjusting anisotropic filtering settings in the graphics options menu
  • Fix for potential crash in geometry streaming
  • Improvements to texture caching for AMD GPUs
  • Fixed an issue where some players still had physical nanites in their inventory that could not be spent at vendors
  • Granted players nanites when they dismantle their Obsolete Technology - spend nanites on new upgrades in Space Stations
  • Added a tutorial mission to guide players through the restoration of their old base
  • Fixed an issue where players were unable to build Frigate Terminals in Creative Mode
  • Fixed an issue where S-Class ships changed appearance
  • Fixed an issue where players were unable to build the Base Cache on their freighter to retrieve compensation for the loss of their freighter base
  • Fixed an issue where some Exosuit technology was not converted to Obsolete Technology. Please note this does not apply retroactively to save games that have already been upgraded.
  • Improved the mapping of old substances to new substances during the save upgrade. Please note this does not apply retroactively to save games that have already been upgraded.

Thank you,

Hello Games

New Survival playthrough for me. Upon my first visit to a space station I ran into an alien that simply offered me a trade for my starting multi-tool. His was a 24 slot tool compared to the 7 or so slot starting tool. This was a straight up trade, mind you with no cost. I was like "Whaaaa? What's the catch?" I'm barely into a new game and I already have a late game multi-tool. Now if I only had resources and tech to fill those slots.

Clearly the game was apologizing for starting me on a shitty acid planet.

from what I understand, EVERY new game start always starts you on a harsh planet to teach how you to survive.

i got a 12 slot one in a trade, but most of the slots were damaged and i had to repair them with costly materials, still a good trade though.

No kidding on this LOL. I played for 2 hours last night and it was nothing but a frantic search to find or repair stuff.

And having your “grave”so far away that you can’t get to it and back is a real bummer !

the real bummer is the small inventory space. i got gifted this huge fuckoff freighter yesterday after like 6 hrs of play, and that made it better but still.

How do these 'giftings' work? How do you get them/find them? Do the Dinosaur looking things give them to you?

I keep running out of air or freezing to death so I can't really get out very far.

I finally found the seal to fix my ship a long long way away, but died coming back. My grave is so far away from my re-spawn point that I can't get there to get my inventory and back without dying. I'm confused LOL

you need to advance a bit more to get that stuff.
as to the not dying part, press X, you can fill up your depleting shields there on the go with materials like carbon and oxygen i believe. the game doesnt really tell you that at all.

Im slowly finding that stuff :)

I'm basically following the instructions of the panel at the lower right corner as to what to do. I guess that's what i should be doing right now.

yes it is. but staying alive shouldnt be a problem i dont think. just scan your surroundings, pick up carbon and oxygen (little red plants) and you can refill your lifesupport stuff regularly. get in the ship if a storm comes. easy.

I got back into the game and started over, and have been playing a while. I do have to say they did improve some things, but at the same time they really made a lot of stuff tedious. I really dislike the whole you have to build a refiner to make some materials and go through a whole put in fuel + component from your inventory then press a button and wait for it to finish. It makes sense logically, but it is just another added time sink and fiddling with inventory items. I only have warped once so far and I have to say finding stuff still sucks. You basically have to just rely on luck. I am now on a self made quest to expand my suit inventory space, but finding the modules on the planet is a real pain. AFAIK it doesn't show up on radar, you basically have to just fly slowly close to the ground and spot it by eye. Worse is you really can't fly fast, or you miss them because of the the way it renders. They only pop-up within a certain range and if you go to fast they just don't show up.

I like the quality of life options like being able to call your space ship to your location, though it uses fuel which makes sense but also sucks if you are away from your ship because you are trying to get components to make fuel. I do like the base building aspect, though I can't figure out how to make the teleport item work. I wasted a lot of time and resources building one at one of my bases before I warped to a new system and I never got it to work.

Tip, on some worlds you can regenerate your environmental shield by just digging a hole in a hill or under ground and waiting a short amount of time.

Just picked up my first freighter yesterday, and got it all outfitted. I never tried this after the last update(s). I think I'm lacking some fuel, or possibly even a needed drive component though, as it won't jump to the next system over. I got the fleet management room built, and talked to the admiral and navigator, and both of their tasks are complete. I think I just need to got through all the slots, and make sure I have the typical ship parts in place. Either way I have a small fleet forming now. Pretty cool!

I try to use my base's teleporter, and bounce to other systems that way when I can. Obviously there's still fuel usage, but there's a bit less random flying that way, and you can avoid things like pirate fights if you just want your ship to go from point A to point B.

I don't agree. Hello Games did fuck up at release, but they actually have been very vigilant since release and stuck with the game to create a bunch of free content. They didn't just abandon it which is applause-worthy. I think with the game as it stands now it's a solid $60 investment. Hell, I bought it for PC when it launched for $60 and I still got my money's worth and sunk over 25 hours into it. Now I started it up again and it feels like a whole new game. Although to be fair a lot of places have been selling it for $30 for PC and PS4. Not sure about Xbox though.

Yeah, where some companies would charge you for DLC, or just cut it off and make a sequel, they just keep on adding new, huge, free content. They've really gone above and beyond. They're not perfect, but the game is shaping up to be Every Man's Sky from how many different ways you can play it now. They don't show any signs of slowing down either, though it appears they're now shooting for smaller updates more often, rather that larger ones less often. One can debate the motivations for what they've done, but pretty much any way you look at it (whether it's "they fixed something that was broken" or "they improved something that was pretty cool") they deserve credit, and to continue selling the game at any price $60 and below. With the recent sale prices, I bought another copy, and will probably grab one more.

I do think the sale prices give them some large spikes on occasion though, which is cool. (as well as the large updates)
