God of War 4

Pre-order price is $48 on amazon for GoW4.

Forced my hand.
Man I went to buy it from Amazon. Had it my cart and went to re-up prime and was sold out when I went go through the with the purchase. Anyone know if they will get more copies in for that price?

Fuck it. Did the digital pre-order on Amazon since I had a $50 gift card there.

Physical copy came back in stock for preorder this morning on Amazon. Got it for $50 with prime.

As expected, Digital Foundry's tech analysis is already up for the game.

Looks good to me. Rare scenes with a few dropped frames on Pro's resolution mode and an uncapped frame rate that stays between 45-60 FPS, which seems odd to include since they couldn't lock it to 60 FPS, but I'm sure some players will appreciate it still. Base PS4's performance is about the same as the Pro's resolution mode as well, which is pretty good still.

I'm sure these minor performance issues will be ironed out after a patch or two as well and it would be cool if they would offer a 900p performance mode or something so we can get a locked 60 FPS in performance mode; I would probably play that over 4K/30 if given the choice, but I have had no issues playing Sony's other exclusives at 30 FPS given that they're pretty rock solid at that target and have a tasteful amount of motion blur to smooth it out a bit, which seems to be adjustable in this game for those who are opposed to it.

Horizon played just fine at 30 FPS. I'm sure this will, too.

I'm definitely picking this up next week. I should have Ni No Kuni 2 done within a few days, depending on how much time I get to play, so I'll have a nice open spot waiting for God of War.

Looks pretty nice at least you can throw your axe like a boomerang this is probably a +1 for the franchise since it's never been done before for the God of War series.
You can use specials also which takes away from using the Axe and shield combo game looks great otherwise even if it looks like it's on the Rails which isn't bad because otherwise you have a Sandbox game where you have no idea where to go. A cart pusher from Walmart like 12 years ago got me hooked on the series. I won't pick it up though I just have too much stuff on backlog. I mean I have Nintendo Wii games I need to play yet.

Does not appear to be on rails as we'd believe, several sites site that there is a ton of room for exploration (of course also customization, crafting, etc.). From my understanding, it seems to dictate exactly where you should go, but there's room for straying off the beaten path as in most games.

I've got a massive backlog as well, but this needs to be in my library day 1.

Yeah, with the boat vehicle in the game, it's not really linear at all; they've said you can complete areas and fight bosses in a different order, as well as having room for lots of optional areas and bosses to find.

Same here though as far as game backlog and priority; this game will be played day one by me and until completion for the next week or so I'm sure. I expect it to be well worth multiple play throughs as well. If the trophies aren't too grindy, I'll attempt to Platinum the game like I did with Horizon (only game I've done so far).

How many other games have an average framerate in the 40's? Seems odd, but I'm really curious how it'll work in practice. I absolutely hate when PC games dip in the 40's, but I also typically feel console games running at 30fps look smoother than a PC game running at the same locked framerate, too.

I would say a lot of console games do, and that's not uncommon. Better than being locked at 30 IMO.

I disagree. I'd rather have fps in multiples of 30. So 30, 60, 90, etc. There is no real noticeable difference between 30fps and 40fps. If the unlocked fps and only reach a 40fps average just lock it to 30 to further stabilize performance.

I tend to think the difference between 30 and 40 is kinda minimal. At least on the PC it is. What are some console games that average fps in the 40's? I'm curious if I own any so I can do some visual testing.

Tomb Raider (2013) does on the PS4. IIRC it averages 40-50 FPS on the standard. Might be closer to 60 on a Pro.

I seen the PS4 version of the God of War 4 system at Walmart looks pretty nice actually just because it's silver I guess.

Anyone buy this digitally? I usually do and like to preload it for midnight release, but am not seeing the option to preload it in the PSN Store. Searching it shows preloading was available yesterday (the 18th).

Edit: Got it to work finally. Had to go into my game library and initiate it from there for some reason. Every other time I've been able to preload it from the store page. I had the download button on the page in the "what's new" section, but selecting it several times didn't do anything and just kicked me back to the main menu again. But the same download button worked from my library somehow.

I preloaded it last night...but it wasn't obvious how to do it. The option isn't there on the product pages. I had to look in my PSN "Library" rather than anywhere in the product pages. In your library it'll show up with a countdown clock and the option to download it.

Yup, was editing my post to say I had to do the same thing. They definitely need to streamline that process a bit and have the option available in all the obvious places. Thanks for the quick response though.

Seeing a crazy ton of glowing reviews and feedback... will be watching this thread but I strongly suspect this is a winner.

Where have you been?! This game is going double uranium dawg! I'm planning to play most of tomorrow, and pretty much all weekend and Monday. Can't freaking wait!

p.s. I started playing the newer Hitman. Top notch stuff.

This will be the first time I've taken a day off for a console game since Uncharted 4. It seems like a can't miss to me. A little Tomb Raider, a little Dark Souls, and a little God of War rolled into one.

Cory Barlog worked for Crystal Dynamics before going back to Sony to make this. His experience working on the Tomb Raider reboot series is really apparent here and it looks like it works really well.

The Tomb Raider and Dark Souls comparisons seem apt based on the gameplay videos I've watched, though it does seem much closer to the TR end of the spectrum than DS, and I would've selfishly preferred the opposite. I know this is getting high reviews and seems like a no-brainer purchase for existing PS4 owners, but the combat looks a bit janky and that's my only real concern.

I have a PS4 Pro + this game in my Amazon cart, but haven't pulled the trigger. I never played Horizon so that would be another bonus to owning a PS4 again.

I'm sure once I start playing then I'll slap myself for ever hesitating.

I didn't realize it was "this" close already. Times has flown!

Finally?!

I need to lie down to absorb this. Did hell freeze over, too? ;)

Sooo....I am getting this tomorrow, but Kulve Taroth just dropped in MHW...

The struggle is real.

I'm stuck at work waiting... can't play until I get out. It's been pre-loaded. I'm gonna get loaded and play it lol.

I got a couple hours into it before the wife dragged me to bed. :(

It starts out a tad slow (esp compared to the previous games), but I think that's a good thing. I can tell this will probably be a game that will consistently keep ramping up the action and story until the end. The introduction of the main antagonist is a nice teaser of things to come, I'm sure.

I can already say I'm digging the combat system. It's not too far off of the Dark Souls games mentioned above (haven't played them, but have played Nioh and Bloodborne which are really similar), in that it has a fast/weak and slow/strong attack button, as well as enemy stun (reverse stamina) meters that allow you to insta-kill them when filled. I'm definitely loving the Thor hammer mechanic with the ax too and don't see it getting old at all.

I was listening to the IGN podcast today and they're saying the main campaign took them about 25 hours to get through, with the game having at least another 15+ hours of additional areas and bosses to find/fight.

I'm off work tomorrow, but unfortunately I have other obligations to fill before I'll be able to sit back down with it in the evening. :(

odditory Doo eeeet! Sony has been killing it with exclusives the past few years that make the console an easy buy.

420

You just know that number is no coincidence.

Oh man - I'm loving it! The Tomb Raider meets Dark Souls description is appropriate.
It looks a lot like Tomb Raider with the graphics and camera angle. The combat should feel familiar for Souls players, though. It isn't quite the same, but it's similar enough.
I really appreciate that they let you tweak your controls so that it matches the Souls scheme, too. I wish the Nioh developers were so kind.

Graphics are terrific and while the FPS are up and down, they're almost always above 30fps. If I had to guess I'd say they average in the upper 40's. It's a little weird, but I think I prefer it to a 30fps lock. I tried out 4K and barely noticed a real world difference outside of the menus. the 4K menus look better, but the game itself doesn't benefit that much. Especially with the FPS dropping into the lower 20's when certain effects are on-screen. Makes me really wish the Xbox One X had a game like this because it might be able to legitimately pull 60fps with some tweaks.

So far so good, about 30-45 minutes in. Looking forward to playing a lot more on Sunday.

. Especially with the FPS dropping into the lower 20's when certain effects are on-screen..

Do you have a frame counter? Where are you getting that # from? Digital foundry did extensive testing and on resolution mode it stayed locked at 30 fps 95% of the time with occasional dropped frames lowering the FPS to 29, 28 and the very rare 27. I think if this game ever dropped into the low 20s digital foundry would have for sure mentioned it.

Anyway, I played the game for about an hour and a half last night and I actually preferred the resolution mode to the performance mode. The resolution for the most part feels pretty locked to me at 30 fps. Don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan of higher FPS, but I find 30 fps for this game decent enough. For those of you who've played Horizon Zero Dawn it's pretty comparable as to how it feels frame rate wise. Not amazing but decent and you stop focusing on it after a short time. I preferred it over the performance mode because even though the performance mode feels a little faster, I can definitely tell the framerate is a little all over the place and the jutter sticks out to me more. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Anyway, as for my first impressions:

I'm playing on a PS4 pro and a Sony 75 inch XBR900E.

When I first loaded the game I had a weird bug where I had black borders around the whole screen. I thought it would go away but after 15 minutes it didn't and I did quick search and sure enough, some people are reporting the game loading with black borders all around. The fix was to go into display area settings and and make sure that the screen borders match the actual screen. First game I've ever had to do this. After doing that everything was good to go.

Visually the game is stunning. I'm not quite ready to declare it better looking than Horizon Zero, but so far it looks amazing. If you have a PS4 pro and a good 4K tv with HDR, you definitely have to buy this game.

The game very cinematic. I think it's perhaps a side effect of the one continuous camera shot (there are no breaks whatsoever) but it definitely sucks you in. Character/voice acting is superb so far.

Controls feel very tight. I very much appreciate the ability to change the control set up. I didn't like the default attacks on the right shoulder. After recently playing over 200 hours of Witcher 3 with weak and strong attacks on square and triangle (or X and Y for my elite controller for PC) I needed to change it. Like everyone else has said, recalling the axe feels so badass.

Definitely explore every nook and cranny. There's little loot boxes everywhere which reward exploration.

The menus are pretty simple and straightforward. There are some mild RPG elements with the upgrade trees and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what they unlock, but overall this is a mainstream action game, so don't expect anything too in depth.

Overall, my first impressions are outstanding. Game is all about visuals, story, and gameplay, which are the 3 critical foundations for any successful game.

I'll be playing a lot more after work today and over the weekend. Looking forward to it.
