Do You Pronounce it GIF or JIF?

Jif is a brand of peanut butter. Gif is a type of image file.

Sorry that some people are confused about that. You should probably go back to school.
What did you say? I can't hear you on that high horse.

I'm pretty sure I pronounce it as jif but am thinking gif in my head.

Like when I imagine sweet sexy and fapping. Kind of the same de·lu·sion.

Jif, like the coffee.

The guy who made the word even said that's how it's pronounced, sorry all of you hard-g people out there, you're wrong, dead wrong.

FWIW: I have only heard one person in my life pronounce this with a "G" (as in "give"). Everyone (including me) pronounce this like the peanut butter (with a "J") as the creator suggests...

Either is acceptable to me if used in context. "I'm sending you a GIF"

I don't care either way.

A lot of people in this thread failed English Class! ITS "GIF" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never encountered a person who pronounces it "jif". I knew the meaning of the acronym years before ever hearing the "jif" argument and it mostly left me confused. How does one get a soft g out of graphics?

give
giblet
git
There's no rules in English, get the fuck out.

If gif stood for "giants interpretation of food" then ok I'd say jif would be proper.
But it doesn't, so it's gif.

You are mispronouncing it if you use a soft g, it's that simple.

Exactly. Graphics Interchange Format = GIFT. You pronounce the acronym's first letter like you would the complete title, unless you've cleverly spelled a new word with your acronym. Nope, didn't happen, so use the first word here.

If you're too lazy to look up the meaning of an acronym you use every day, then that's not my fault fuckers :D

Considering that either way is technically correct I think you need to go back to school.

I say it like GIF because the JIF peanut butter came first and I didn't want to pronounce both of them the same way. I have also never heard it as JIF from any human before.
and
Gif...because I like my pictures and peanut butter distinguishable.
I agree with both.
Now, I understand that the inventor wanted to use a cute word that sounded neat. But it was already in use, understood by pretty much everyone to mean a brand of peanut butter. Why add another sound alike word to the English language? Just because you can? That's behaving like an asshole. I don't like assholes. So I pronounce it with the hard g. Sorry, asshole. Invent another word next time, that hasn't already been used.

I don't care what the creator calls it, that daft bastard. How do you get "jiff" from Graphics Interchange Format? Is it Jraphics Interchange Format? I think I'll start pronouncing NASA NAY-SUH cuz you know, fuck it. :p

Honestly, who cares what it's called. The important thing is that who ever you are talking to understands what you are talking about. If you want to call it Jif, call it jif. Just be prepared to have people ask you wtf you're talking about and explain or end the conversation.

This is silly, everyone knows that gifs are pictures of girls and jpgs are pictures of boys.

Jif, like the coffee.

First off, it's not a word, it's an acronym.

Second, the creator of the format doesn't control the English language.

So, I'm going to continue calling it GIF with a hard G because that's what every other human I've heard say it in real life has used and that's what makes sense to me.

Lesson of the day for those who continue to think they are the ones educated:

ge.gif

ga.gif

Lesson 53 Soft g (ge, gi, gy)

and yes you pronounce acronyms as words so this applies to them as well...

or continue to sound like an ignorant fool, that's your choice...

WTF are you talking about? Gift, give, gigahertz, gimmick, gang, girl, giggle, gimp, etc. Telling people they aren't uneducated while displaying ignorance is just a magnificent display of derp.

I was not "telling people they aren't uneducated"... (did you mean to use a double negative there? derp much?)

I'm just saying that this is a commonly known rule used in many words, so don't go around telling people it's always hard G "becuz of engrish!" .... THAT is ignorance, son ...

don't get me upset or I'll have no choice but to bring out my nerf gun...

I'm pretty sure everyone already knows that there are hard and soft gs in the English language. That's not the point being argued, you dingus. It's that the first letter of the acronym is derived from the word Graphics, which is a hard G. Making it a J sound for no apparent reason is what's being discussed. You're pointing out something that nobody was talking about. So, grats.

IT'S AMERICANIZED BASTARDIZED POOCHED ENGLISH, DEAL WITH IT. :p

A girl I used to work with pronounced it "jif", but I refuse to say it like that.

To be fair, if you pronounce it with a soft g "Jiff" you should pronounce jpeg "Gaypeg"
fair? you want FUCKING FAIR!? how about you treat the acronym with respect and back it on off... you don't wanna feel sorry for yourself, do you!? cuz, that's what'll happen when momma come school yo ass!!!

more videos for y'all:

and here's that WIKI page on the amazingly huge list (kidding) of words that start with G that are hard where you'd expect it so be soft:

Appendix:List of English words where G is pronounced exceptionally - Wiktionary

...I mean, if you guys were right that list would be much much longer, wouldn't it?

it just proves you CAN say it either way, but don't go 'round saying your way is right when it's clearly the exception to the frickin' rule!

Ok, then work on this one:

GHOTI

('cause it sure a hell doesn't get pronounced like most anyone would at a glance) :)

That proves that you have no idea what the discussion is about.

it doesn't matter that the G stood for Graphics... acronyms are said as if they are words...

SNAFU: Situation Normal, All Fucked Up...
LASER: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
RADAR: Radio Detection And Ranging
FUBAR: Fucked Up Beyond All Repair/Recognition
SCUBA: Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus
SWAT: Special Weapons And Tactics
TASER: Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle
CARE package: Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe

try saying these words using your logic...

so becuase you can find some obscure exception means calling it "gif" (hard G) must be correct? no... it just means english is not so simple and straightforward sometimes, so some people need to brush up on what is and isn't standard practices and open up their mind a bit... also please stop with the patronizing comments, because I WILL GET OUT MY KNIFE AND K--- just kidding folks, if that wasn't obvious, this is obviously a place of sunshine and rainbows... hugs all around! :p

Every single of those begins with the same pronunciation as the first letter ...

so, you pronounce
SNAFU as "SNA FUH"?
LASAR as "LACE EAR"?
RADAR as "RAID AIR"?
FUBAR as "FUH BAR"?
SCUBA as "SCUH BAYE"?
SWAT as "SWATE"?
TASER as "TASS EAR"?
CARE as "CAR EE"?

or do you pronounce All and "Ale", Emission as "Ehmission", And as "On d", Underwater as "Ooooh ndawater", Electric as "Ulectric", American as "Aye merircan"?

You have extremely poor reading comprehension. You've yet to actually respond to anything I actually said. Good grief. Enjoy living in your bubble.

ah you're right, it "begins" like that, yea... still it doesn't mean .gif should always be used with hard G
