Mafia III

Mafia isn't simply Italians and that's it, there were others that were more open and not simply restricted by family or race.

True, but,

"When used alone and without any qualifier, "Mafia" typically refers to either the Sicilian Mafia or the Italian-American Mafia."

"The term was originally applied to the Sicilian Mafia, but has since expanded to encompass other organizations of similar methods and purpose, e.g. "the Russian Mafia", "the Japanese Mafia", "the Albanian Mafia" or "Maltese Mafia". The term is applied informally by the press and public; the criminal organizations themselves have their own terms (e.g. the Sicilian and American Mafia call themselves "Cosa Nostra", the Mexican Mafia calls itself La Eme and the "Japanese Mafia" calls itself yakuza)."

So, if they're going to call it "Mafia" they need to have it related to the Italian Mafia somehow.

They are,

Notice the scar, so Vito is going to be in the game.

I didnt get much mafia vibes watching the gameplay video ? sure graphics look nice but it looked more lika gta 5 mixed with saints row... and the voice in the reveal was awful just :(

That's terrible. Physics gone out the window.

You hit a car from the side and it flies up into the air 10 feet, and flips over 50 times, blows up. And meanwhile you drive on without a scratch. That was the point when I stopped watching.

I just watched to verify this and you're right. Jesus christ this game looks awful :S

Agreed, the voice was terrible and there wasn't anything to really get me excited about the game. I do want to like the game though.

They should have had Ray Liotta do the voice, that would be epic. Hell, just give me a game based on the entire vibe of Goodfellas.

Best thing to take away from that video is that not every car is going to explode when you hit it. They only did that to show off explosions, nice.

I don't know... I feel a sense of caution about this. I'm hoping for the best.

I liked part 2 for what it was but I'm hoping we get more of a balance somewhere in the middle on free roam and strong narrative. Part 2 was a tragedy in this sense: I drove around that city and it was gorgeous and loaded with all kinds of amazing detail... for nothing. It was completely void and empty and it could have been so much more.

The first Mafia game was epic...2 did very little to capture that feeling.

I'm not super hopeful for this one, though it could be good.

Played about half way thought then got the nephew to finish it got boring

I liked the second one. Sure it may not have been as epic as the first, but the story focused game was still there. Nobody really has a game with the same setting.

How has this thread not been bumped in 2 months?

2 hours of gameplay (maybe PC)? Sorry the original poster claimed it was PC but I am not sure.

If the gameplay feels right I think I'll be happy with this.

Loved the first one, liked the 2nd one and I'll be honest, despite all disdain for this one from the masses, I really don't think it looks that bad. If I pick it up, I'm sure that I'll enjoy it. I always dug the setting of the previous Mafia games, I always thought that they did pretty well as period pieces.

Really wish they'd say what the bloody "sim" driving option does.

Watching that video was disappointing coming from someone who was a huge fan of Mafia 1 and to a lesser degree Mafia 2.

In Mafia 1 vehicles needed fuel (you run out your car was dead, no going anywhere, get another one if you ran out of fuel), cops reacted to traffic violations, speeding, running red lights, etc. This meant that when you actually DID need to speed or drive dangerous (IE chasing) it was more exciting because you know it would draw attention. Since you couldn't just drive willy nilly with 0 consequences it makes those moments more memorable and suspenseful then games like GTA where you can drive like a madman with no consequence.

Mafia 2 toned down on a few of these, Daniel Vavra (lead designer, and writer for Mafia 1) left before the game was done. It was obvious that Mafia 2 was not the game it was originally planned to be, the countryside area wasn't finished and things felt missing. one of these things was fuel. In Mafia 2 you could run out of fuel and there were gas stations you could use however running out of fuel did almost NOTHing, your car "sputtered" but it didn't die or anything, so you could just keep driving with 0 fuel. Digging through the game files modders figured out the game was going to have , like mafia 1, similar things in regards to this but it was obviously hcanged during development.

Mafia 3 seems to have almost completely gotten rid of ALL of this. Cops don't give a hoot if you drive like a speed demon or anything, run red lights? A - ok. Fuel? Cars don't need no stinkin fuel!

What sucks is that the other parts of the game, the story, the setting, the characters, all look and sound great, I just wish it had kept its "sim" style driving and traffic laws, that was something that separated it from all the other open world driving games and imo made it BETTER, not worse.

I loved Mafia 1 and I did like Mafia 2 but not feeling this one from the videos.

least htey might have a tie in like they did in Mafia 2. I always liked that they did that.

Well with Mafia 3 it's going to be quite bigger, as he is one of your three lieutenants in the game so he'll play quite a large role in terms of supporting characters/stories.

I hope we get more info about Joe and what happened.

Dunno anything about this game but I'd say there's a 99% chance Vito dies, also a strong possibility we're the ones who kill him.
Since they pulled that stunt in Mafia 2, I'm going to go with a decision the main character makes leads to Vito's death and we feel bad about it etc etc.

Maybe we actually find out what happened at the end of Mafia 2.

Still looks like a really bad GTA copy... The rear view mirror reminds me of the old school Test Drive games...

Some slight spoilers for Mafia III
Vito turns on the Italian mafia and he helps you out, he joins with your "group" and you have him as a lieutenant for the game. The lieutenants under you (there's three of them) throughout the game you can choose what to "give" them control of and if you ignore what they want/don't give them much they can end up leaving you and getting pissed

It does make me think GTA done Mafia style. I didn't care for Mafia I and heard negative things about Mafia 2 so didn't try it. Mafia III doesn't really make me want to try it either. Most likely will pass on it.

They're both great games however Mafia 3 looks totally different, probably in a bad way. If they go the GTA 5 route there will be a lot of disappointed people.

Mafia 1 has not aged well but 2 is definitely worth playing. Both tell great stories if you can get past Mafia 1's graphics.

If I wasn't given Mafia II, I would have been pissed paying for it, it just felt unfinished and lackluster. Between this or Watchdogs 2, I think I will go with the latter.

The thing about Mafia vs GTA was the focus.

GTA was focused heavily on side-activities, side stories/characters, other things to do besides the main storyline, etc.

Mafia on the other hand was purely focused on the storyline. In Mafia 1 it was an open world but you weren't side-tracked off the main story by side-missions or anything else. This kept you focused and glued to the storyline. For me I loved this approach. I don't know about anyone else here, but I hardly EVER finish open world games in the GTA/Ubisoft style open worlds because I often get side-tracked by side missions/etc and get bored eventually or something comes along that grabs my attention more.

With Mafia this was not an issue at all. The story and characters were very well written (it seriously could have been made into a movie and with a decent budget/actor would have been great). It never made me lose interest or get sidetracked.

I'm looking forward to this game. I loved both 1 & 2 and am surprised of the negativity here toward 2. I did wish they kept things like fuel necessity and traffic violations, it felt very odd to have to stop at stoplights when red and a cop is around. It was hard to believe they got rid of this element, it was very immersive and innovative.

So 2K isn't even sending review copies of the game out to the press until the game launches. That's not a great sign. Not automatically a sign that the game will be bad but not exactly a good sign.

Right. Sense of caution here.

For me this series has always been a hit and miss. The first was the all around best even though it had some of its own quirks.

I'm expecting this game to be more of the same where there are some things that I really like and some other aspects where I feel like they missed the boat. If this game isn't at least a 7.5/10 title, realistically, then I'll view it as a huge letdown and disaster. I'm hoping for the best for this thing.

The more I see, the less I like. It really does look like a generic open world grind fest like Mad Max with a bunch of power fantasy gore porn thrown in.

I guess this is the series' first time doing open world, so we shouldn't expect much???

The reviews will be mixed/mediocre just like Mad Max. Hopefully the campaign/story will carry it!
